That sinking feeling - Brinklow Boat Services Floating Dry Dock

Historic narrowboat Victoria gets a makeover on Brinklow Boat Services dry dock, Turtle. Built in the 1950's it used to be a maintenance barge for the Manchester Ship Canal Company, probably mainly used on the Bridgewater Canal. It was lengthened, extra bearers and a sump added, making it into the mean machine you see now.

The larger floating docks used for ships are fitted with ballast tanks which can be individually filled or emptied. Thus the dock sinks or rises on an even keel.

The dock is cleaned out during it's use over the year, most of the boats docked are under 30 years old, the % of boats that still have paint left below the water line is low so the debris in the bottom of the dock is also low. The use of red lead painted on working boat was only applied to the inside of the hulls . Just read an article on the use of road salt and antifreeze that is spread on our roads each winter, the pollution is massive but with out it so would be the accident rate .

Lots of rubbish in the canal - especially where there are moored boats, tree branches and worse. Of course when you're selling coal, that's the place you are doing all your maneuvering...
