A remastered game should, at the very least, be as good as the original. Well, regarding the Silent Hill HD Collection, it's clear this was not the case.

That is also basically how many modern games handle the issue. They just disguise it a little better. Instead of a boring door animation you see a billion times, the character may have to crawl under or between something slowly to get somewhere. Or elevators. Quicktime Events. Climbing a tall ladder. Shit like that. Or a prime example is one of my all time favorite games, Tony Hawks American Wastelands. It has an "open world", but between all the cities and little places, there is allways a small, narrow section inbetween with little to do. It's an interactive loading screen. The principle is exactly the same, hide that your loading with something else, that at best feels natural, or that it belongs in there.

As others have said here, it was not only far from unusual, it was the NORM. It's only a relatively recent development to look after your IP and it's data. They simply saw no value in it once it had been done and dusted. If you read any gaming history books like ones by Chris Kohler, or The Ultimate Book of the History of Video Games, it explains this in more detail.

@TheMichigami
@TheMichigami 3 жыл бұрын
sadly surprisingly common in the history of video games, a lot of early companies just didn't expect the things they were working on to be as significant as some of them became and lots of data was lost with time and poor storage practices, and in some cases from obsolete formats. Lots of 90's and early 2000's games were lost due to being built on SGI workstations, which were considered one of the best systems you could use for graphics rendering at the time but also used a proprietary unix-based file system (irix) and file extensions which were unreadable by other computers.

Exactly. Yeah, it was a 100% limitations, but it made the world feel MUCH more depressing and scary. It also added a lot more atmosphere. Wich are things you want in a Horror game. Granted, this can be acchieved in other measures as well, but that wouldn't be Silent Hill anymore. Altough, they could have flexed for sure, but with the fog. It could have looked a LOT better then they made it. Especially with intact fog - when you got so little shit to actually render, you can make what's there pretty damn good looking.

@deltahalo241 3 жыл бұрын
@@nstorm2415 The reason for that is because originally you weren't going to be able to swap graphics in Halo CEA, it was just going to be a straight up remaster like a lot of other games around that time. The switching feature was only there so that the devs could make sure the new assets were in the right place, however at some point in development, they decided that the switching feature was too cool not to include in the retail version of the game. While this was an awesome addition, the new assets hadn't been designed with this in mind, this meant that the new assets were now awkwardly given the old assets hitboxes, which leads to the issue of invisble walls, no collision or enemies not taking damage when they should. When Halo 2 Anniversary came around, they knew the switching feature would be returning, so all of the assets were designed with it in mind and as a result it's a much more solid remaster.

They should have just given it to Bluepoint. They said their process is to take a retail copy of the game and work it back so that everything that was included in the original is still there, but given higher resolution textures and thus, actually remastering the game. You don't even need the company's copy of the source code to do that, just (at the time) go to GameStop or any PS2 game retailer and then get to work. Bluepoint has done this so much and so successfully that, in the words of Twin Perfect in their "The Real Silent Hill Experience" video on the HD Collection: "If Bluepoint can do it, why not Hijinx? Or better still, why not Bluepoint?" Bluepoint did the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, another great Konami franchise, and it was phenomenal. Such a shame to not give Silent Hill that same respect.
@championchris4078
@championchris4078 3 жыл бұрын
@@UrobourosZero the real issue is that konami didnt want to make a real game. They didnt want a great hd remaster. They wanted something quick and fast to make money right away. This was part of a tri pronged marketing campaign that was supposed to have the movie revelations, the hd collection, and a new game coming out all in the same 2 week span. This wasn't functional in time for the movie to release so they simply made it into something that could be called a functional game regardless of quality. Once it was released and the money was made they didnt care. Hence why they never fixed any issue or released patches to fix things. At that time consoles charged devs to install patches and they disnt want to spend one more dollar.

I hate to defend Konami... I really do, but the Silent Hill series came out in an era when code was seldom kept, particularly in Japan (I worked in the industry for nearly a decade and regularly dealt with review code in various formats). There was little online multiplayer, games shipped finished, there were no day one patches. Remasters weren't a thing and no one had any idea we'd want to play game X a decade in the future, so code was disposed of as part of the course or as a security feature. I agree the SH collection IS awful but the times also played an important role in why we got a steaming pile of dung instead of a collection of some of the greatest games of a genre and generation.

This is, like, one of Konami's big franchises. The early games are widely regarded as among the best horror games of all time. They won't re-release the first game due to licensing rights, and the second and third game are only available in a broken not-so-HD version that looks and plays worse than the original. The recent games are garbage that only resemble Silent Hill on the vaguest superficial level. You can't give them money for a decent version of the game, and the only way you can play them is to shell out about $40-100 a pop for original copies, or to torrent an unpublished game Konami protects harder than a recent Brazzers movie.

Actually the fog is missing because it's A an unfinished build, and B: the PS2 actually had an incredibly fast alpha texture fill rate that modern systems of 360 gen actually struggled to match at a reasonable frame rate. So a lot of the alpha fog textures had to be scaled back. The PS2 version still had a bunch of alpha textures over the draw in fog to hide it. The HD version should have pulled the draw distance back in and just use larger but less frequent alpha textures to solve the issue... But they didn't. If you wanna play SH2 or SH3 in HD go get the PC versions, get the unofficial patch, run that. Any PC today will run it.

Well first off Karl, Smashing video, I loved the first games and so felt the same way that fog just added so much more to it then some low resolution things would have. >site GTA3< And after watching this video I'm even more glad I never bought the HD collection as well having the early games and still a ps2, why would I want to, maybe if we are lucky they will try again as the perfect remaster copies if they ever find the finished versions of the code to use. On a second note, if I ever get my company off the ground to the point I can sponsor someone. You good sir, would be on that list.

Funnily enough it seems that both the main topic and the post-credits talk both have one big thing in common: The people involved either didn't know or didn't care what makes a particular thing work, whether that be a game or sponsorship, and to no surprise when you can't be bothered to do your research then things tend not to work out very well.
