For those that have not seen the original Clash of the Titans. Bubo was a gift to Perseus from Athena, goddess of wisdom and military strategy, that helped Perseus by giving advice. So I'm all for Bubo's Revenge because it could outsmart and kill Perseus.
@madmanarrivednow2 жыл бұрын
Weeeell yes and no. Zeus commanded Athena to give Perseus her real owl, but she went to Hephaestus to make a fake one and that was Bubo, the mechanical owl. So the remake cut out one of the best origin stories of the original. Saddest thing in it is, that this serious movie cut out Bubo, but had to fill in some of it's actions with Djinns... from another myths.

As everyone else on Olympus to aid his precious bas... I mean illegitimate son. Nothing against Perseus here, he was still the hero. Zeus on the other hand had no consideration about what the other Olympians wanted. Mechanical Bubo is a defiance by Athena. She was like "no way I'm gonna give my friend away into possible peril. But Hephaestus, the one who is never really mentioned and respected, shall make a working replica. And the little annoying but still charming character of Bubo was "born".

Tbh it’s because they cut out the real thematic moment in the movie that mattered. This isn’t supposed to be dances with wolves but with aliens, it’s a story about a planet that has evolved to the point of everything symbiotically working together. The concept of being an avatar is about being able to transcend our physical bodies and bad human ways in favor of a consciousness more connected to our environment. The Native American stuff is purely there for world building but it’s hard to tell that they aren’t the main point when they removed the scene where Jake takes psychadelics and realizes everything on Pandora is connected consciously to eachother.

@Redfern422 жыл бұрын
I'm 59 so I was 18 when "Clash of the Titans" premiered and I recall a rather different opinion of Bubo. Certainly, he was a hit with the kids, but for viewers a bit older, the thought was, at least at that time, "Really?! You felt the need to create and clumsily insert an R2D2 'wannabe'? Aren't there enough productions 'aping' Star Wars and trying to 'ride the coattails' of its success?!" Remember, Star Wars was only a few years old at this time and, yes, there was a lot of imitation taking place. Things like "daytime dramas" (soap operas), usually focused upon relationship and domestic strife, suddenly introduced sci-fi elements like alien abductions or whatnot because that was suddenly the "hot thing". A number of, well, today I guess they'd be considered "influencers" believed Bubo was a "symptom" of "bandwagon hopping". It wasn't just that Bubo was mechanical, that falls in line with the skills and powers attributed to Hephaestus, but having the bionic bird "speak" in "whirs", "clicks" and flute-like "toots" basically told the audience, "Yeah, we make no pretense about it. Kids love the beeping rubbish bin, so here's R2 in brass feathers!" I've occasionally wondered, but have found no information to either "support" or "denounce" it, was Bubo created and added at the studio's insistence? Or, did Ray Harryhausen create envision the mechanical owl of his own accord. If "studio interference", my reaction would be one of "I'm not surprised." But, if, instead, it was Harryhausen, I'm not really sure how I feel about that. On a far more positive tangent, I'll not the following. Ray Harryhausen forever changed the popular culture's perception of Medusa. Before "Clash of the Titans", the Gorgon was usually depicted as simply a woman with snakes for hair, pretty much for a few thousand years. But along comes Harryhausen who opts to give her the lower body of a serpent. true, various myths had already given us snake tailed women, but I can't recall any notable examples that preceded what the famed stop motion artist presented, combining a Lamia with a Gorgon. I suspect if a group of people were stopped on the sidewalk and were asked to describe Medusa, at least half would mention the lower body of a snake in addition to the serpents for hair, even if they have never seen either movie. It has become that much ingrained in our popular culture!
@dangolpossum2 жыл бұрын
After I read this, I was amazed to look it up and find out the original came out in '81. It looks so much like other Harryhausen movies like _Jason and the Argonauts_ and _One Million Years BC_ I'd assumed it was from around 1960 too.

What I mean is whenever you have movies or media exploring different mythological pantheons they typically just get reskinned over Christian beliefs where the creator god is good and the war/death god is the devil. Only bit of media that does any of these mythologies justice is the God of War franchises where Zeus is the main villain of the piece because he’s a jerk, same goes for Odin. As an Avatar fan, I am OFFENDED that you think I can't name at least one character without looking it up. 😆 I know it's a shitty scifi Dances With Blue Space Kitties, but at the very least, it was pretty enough and had enough world-building potential that I was OBSESSED and am really looking forward to seeing the sequels! Also, Jake Sulley, Neytiri, Grace. And for good measure; Ikran, Olo Eyktan, Iknimaya, Oel Ngati Kameiea! 😋 There was an entire con-language constructed for it, as well, and you can learn it online! There aren't MANY fans, but we're out there!

I will say the language actually really interested me. I remember like the movie at the time but protesting seeing it bc as a kid I was a bit of a hipster, so “if popular must be bad” lol. I can totally understand liking the film tho and I do think people hate on it a little too much.

Kinda awkward that I enjoyed the movie because I was a kid and everyone was going through that phase where because Percy Jackson was popular, everything Greek mythology related was as well purely by association.

When I first saw Clash of the Titans (2010) the only audience reaction I remember was when Bubo showed up. Everyone was shocked, happy and/or genuinely surprised that he was included, even for such a throwaway scene. Otherwise the film is very bland. I think more Bubo definitely would've made things interesting.

Clearly this is photo shopped and Karl is confused on the release date of Clash of the Titans.

I remember that scene! I was like “wohoo! There he is!” And then he gets tossed aside. What the hell!??!

I remember some of the character names from Avatar, Jake Sully and… suk-te? Thats how you pronounce it at least. Its been a while since I last watched it.

There are a few hardcore avatar fans online that get real salty whenever I mention its lack of pop culture impact. Especially now that we got a trailer I get responses to comments. About how wrong was since everyone is evidently so hype for the next movie.
