Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, fifteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
The fourteenth series of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who is set to premiere on 11 May 2024, and is expected to air through to 22 June. It will be the fifth series led by Russell T Davies as head writer and executive producer and the first since his return to the show, having previously worked on it from 2005 to 2010. This series is set to be the fourteenth to air following the programme's revival in 2005 and will be the fortieth season overall. The fourteenth series was announced with Davies' return to the programme for its 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond, with Bad Wolf becoming a co-producer for the series. The series is referred to in marketing and promotional material as "Season One" following the production changes and the acquisition of Doctor Who's international broadcasting rights by Disney+.
The series stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, a new incarnation of the Doctor, an alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in the TARDIS, which appears to be a British police box from the outside. The Fifteenth Doctor was introduced in "The Giggle" (2023) through a "bi-generation", in which he split from his predecessor, the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant), rather than replacing him. The series also introduces Millie Gibson as the Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday.
The series, which was preceded by a Christmas episode on 25 December 2023, will consist of eight episodes, which have been directed by Julie Anne Robinson, Ben Chessell, Dylan Holmes Williams, and Jamie Donoughue. Alongside Davies, who wrote six of the episodes, the writers include Kate Herron, Briony Redman, and former showrunner and head writer Steven Moffat. Filming began in December 2022 and concluded in July 2023. It was the first series to be produced at Wolf Studios Wales following the move from Roath Lock Studios for the preceding anniversary specials.
Auditions for the role of the Fifteenth Doctor started in December 2021, assisted by casting director Andy Pryor. Davies was interested in casting "new talent" and someone "younger", with most of the actors who auditioned under the age of 30. There was also no limit on gender and background, with auditions held for men, women, and one non-binary actor. Pryor said that when casting the Doctor, "you always want someone unexpected... an actor who contrasts with what's gone before yet still brings those essential qualities that the Doctor has". Ncuti Gatwa was the final candidate to audition for the role. Davies said that the production team "thought [they] had someone and then in he came and stole it", describing it as "the most blazing audition". Executive producer Phil Collinson stated that Gatwa "did things with [the role] that I'd never seen an actor playing Doctor Who do".
On 9 January 2023, the BBC announced that Aneurin Barnard would appear as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, and that Jemma Redgrave, having reprised her role in the previous series would continue to appear as Kate Stewart during the fourteenth series. On 20 January 2023, further casting announcements from the BBC revealed that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge would appear as Ms Flood and Carla Sunday. On 3 April 2023, it was announced that Jinkx Monsoon would play a major antagonistic role in the series, called "Maestro". On 5 May 2023, it was announced that Jonathan Groff would play a key role in the series. On 24 May 2023, the BBC announced that Indira Varma (who previously portrayed Suzie Costello in Torchwood) would join the series to play The Duchess. On 7 June 2023, Bonnie Langford was announced to be reprising her role as Mel Bush for the series. On 15 June 2023, Lenny Rush was also announced, to play a "mysterious" character named Morris. Alexander Devrient will reprise his role as Colonel Christopher Ibrahim.

“I thought that was non-diegetic” I think that was my favourite line, it’s very funny referential humour, but it also implies that the Doctor can and probably always has been able to hear the show’s soundtrack.

It makes sense he could. He's been aware of the fourth wall since we first met him. What I love here is that they made a reference to music of the spheres. Something only people who watched or were there at the proms during David Tennant's run would know about. Also, I saw the credits mentioned murray gold as part of the actors list alongside other artists, I think. It said they were playing themselves, which I think is just a perfect little thing.

I honestly adored it, it felt like a pantomime. I can absolutely get the song at the end not being for everyone but as for everything else? Was a blast.. I do wonder if the 4th wall breaks from the Doctor are indicative of him being in the land of fiction, maybe the Toymaker isn't as defeated as we think?

I really love what you're saying here. This whole fantasy theme could be some kind of over-arching plot where the doctor is trapped in a realm of magic. Even Ruby Sunday is inherently magical, her origin and name being fairytale-esque (the doctor literally says this in church on ruby road). The idea that the doctor is trapped in some kind of splinter universe with this pantheon of Gods is a really interesting thought !!!!

Ehh. It's probably more that the land of fiction is overtaking normal reality. It's a lot more grand and high stakes then if it was just the doctor mistakenly being in the land of fiction. The one that waits is coming. The story line is trying to build from the Trickster, the Toy Maker then to the Maestro and moving on to other characters who are similar, so wonder who is the next foe to be created for the show. The cybermen and Darlycks became played out as a major foe I just hope that Disney does not "WOKE" the series beyond the Original story line of The Doctor which would ruin it as many of the shows get ruined when you change it so much that it is NOT what it started out as. They have already replaced a companion in season 2 which is not unheard of but she was a popular actress. We can only hope that they do not replace characters to often and ruin the series that has been running new episodes from decades.

I loved Maestro. Unlike the Toymaker or The Trickster, they don't have any rules to follow. The Toymaker follows the rules of play, The Trickster has to trick people into allowing him to cause chaos. Maestro is the essence of music, and given how they were born from the Toymaker, not born as an ancient force of the universe, they don't have any rules to follow. I also liked how, The Toymaker's domain took time to dissipate after the events of The Giggle, the Doctor used Maestro's domain after they were banished to have a little fun.

A fun little detail from the episode was that the hidden chord John and Paul used to vanquish Maestro is the same chord heard at the very end of the Beatles song, 'A Day in the Life.' That song tore the rulebook up and pretty much changed the future of music. Fitting it was that chord.

It moved too fast to comprehend what was going on and while i liked Jinkx Monsoon as Maestro, i felt that she was overacting a bit too much. I found it really interesting that when the Doctor takes Ruby back to her "current" time, it's been 6 months (!) since the last episode which took place in December 2023. So, we've basically skipped the Doctor and Ruby's entire getting-to-know-you phase, which I guess explains why so many of the typical "new companion questions" were crammed into episode 1 (aka Gallifrey, 2 hearts, last of the time lords stuff, the TARDIS functions and translation, time travel paradoxes etc). I'm honestly not sure how to feel about it, as I do like these bits whenever we get a new companion, but then again, I get the feeling that Ruby herself is part of a season-long plot line, which means she might not be sticking around for too long after all.. So, maybe this was an intentional choice, so that the audience doesn't get too personally attached to her as a companion? IDK. I did like the emotional scenes we got with her, but I did find it a bit weird that she and the Doctor know each other so well already, and most of it happened off screen. That being said, I do appreciate that it creates quite a time gap for future BF stories and fanfic/comics writers haha. Also, now that we've got an actual mention of Susan + the "there's always a twist at the end" song, I am starting to think that Susan Twist might just actually be... Susan. lol I know it's the most obvious theory and that it's been floating around for a while, I just never really bought into it too much, but that was mostly cause I figured trying to explain Susan to new viewers might be too complicated. Now that it's been mentioned anyway, I'm starting to rethink that.

I wholeheartedly agree about the music battle. Didn't seem cohesive and though I'm not a musician I can appreciate music and, like you, feel it could have upped its game a bit - I'm minded of how Doctor Strange did a similar thing with a battle of notes. That or scrap the music battle altogether as it seemed the Doctor was out of his depth on the piano and was lucky that John and Paul stumbled over it near the end to save the day, and instead make the ending song and dance routine the way to defeat Maestro - it felt tacked on to me and think it may have worked better if it was a case of the Doctor reigniting the music inside the hearts of humans and they banish Maestro with that.

Maybe Ruby could be some sort of embodyment of memory (simarly to how the maestro is the embodyment of music) which is why the snow appears on the mention of church on Ruby road and why the maestro struggled to understand what and who Ruby is

I absolutely love the fact that you really enjoy the Fenric/ace storyline.❤ I turned 12 in 1989, around the dates of that story being shown, and I recorded that whole Season on my parents' VCR and then there was no more Who until I was almost 19. Imagine that, the series was setting up a brilliant new arc around a companion and then boom, no more televised stories. I then lost touch with who in the early 90s and personally didn't enjoy the TV movie, but I have still watched it religiously since I was around 3 years of age. Winning a Technical Manual in a Western Daily Press competition in 1983 (for incorrectly saying that TARDIS stood for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space - although I am sure the plural had been uttered at least once that I'd heard - hence I've cringed at hearing "Dimension" through the 21st century). However I was never a reader of the Virgin New Adventures or any other forms of work that kept fandom going through the TV drought. I'm so glad that Russell, Steven and others who were so brilliantly good at keeping the Doctor going and then reviving their adventures on TV, are still involved today. We do however need new blood prepared to takeover one day as these fine people, brilliant though they are, are now 20+ years older than they were when they recreated the show between 2003 and 2005. Russell's recent episodes have certainly been stronger (on the whole) than some of his later work in the 00s, but I don't want to see him burnt out and then leaving the show back in the 90s doldrums. I'm really hopeful he can find and work with proteges (I think we could do with a few) who can keep the show as fresh and brilliant and relevant as he and Moffat were able to achieve. I'm personally not a huge fan of Chibnall's era, however I am not a hater of him or Jodie or anyone else, every era of this show has had it's ups and downs, and I feel we might look back on it more fondly (like Colin Baker's spell has improved with age in the eyes of many - ironically given Chris was on that show complaining about it during the 80s). I am so glad that Russell has stepped in and returned to delivering good episodes that are of this age. He's a big hero of mine and I so wished I'd told him that when I went to the Trafford Centre to get him to sign his book back in 2009 (I think), instead I think I was sadly quite shy and reserved and poor Russell looked rather tired. I'm so glad that he's back enjoying himself writing scripts for Who. I'm hoping that, unlike Harriet Jones, we should not be saying those 5 words about him for some years to come😀 However I am keen that when he does decide that he's ready to hand it over again, the show can survive into eternity with fantastic scripts and brilliant show runners to take it beyond mine and my daughters' lives into the 22nd century and onwards❤

One of my favourite aspects of Maestro is the meta aspect. Them winking to the camera, playing the Doctor Who theme and using it to play with the Doctor. You really buy the raw power of this entity as they play with the meta aspects of the show. It just feels so fresh, pushing the show into new territory that I am really excited to explore further.

I like the episode but to me it has a big flaw to the way the resolution was done. Maestro is just Mr Mxyzptlk with a lot more Rizz and you don't get them to do the banish magic, you just have to somehow figure out the chord sequence to banish all on your own... which the Doctor gets all but one note right w/out much explanation, so it feels a bit like an unearned victory. So for me I rate this around 7.5 just slightly under Space Babies because it was just a wee bit too wonky for me. I am your reverse Tharries, I liked The Giggle more. Oh I did grant a bonus tic for doing the old Pyramids of Mars thing with showing Ruby the changed present if the past stays F'ed. My wife was harsher on the episode, said it was ok, but felt like it was made for a younger audience, like it was more of a Sarah Jane Adventures style story, and I can kinda see that point. As for the Beetles and Music - I like the casting for John, but not so much for Paul. I am a big music guy. I have varied interests cause I just like lots of things. Doctor WHO, other Sci-fi, Music, Politics, Gaming, Actual Science (physics, astronomy, etc), and pretty much roughly in that order. The only things I despise are lies, cruelty, injustice, bad plotting, any song with country twang as an element, and computers that refuse to obey their human masters IRL. Like this one some days despite being relatively new.

I'm still interested in the Ruby story line but this episode was very weak at this point I need to point out that I am not a fan of musical episodes so it was like that I wouldn't like it . I'm a massive Beatles fan so that element fell flat on its A***. That could have been handled better. It felt like a filler episode to me as did Space Babys. Maestro had potential but it wasn't fulfilled.. I am a long standing Doctor Who fan I've watched from the very beginning. I liked the 60th specials very much but these last two episode have lacked something I feel a bit let down but I'm still enthusiastic for the next episode. PS I don't normally moan about the show and I don't understand why I've struggled with these last two episode.

The soul splitting thing feels a bit unsatisfying. I assumed that it was pulling a part of the doctors future into the present, which gave him time to live a normal life for a while before being pulled backwards and completing the loop. But now we have a second doctor who is currently living a normal life recovering from multiple millennia of loss (but who will eventually start travelling again, because he will continueto age slowly), and a main doctor who was being all wise at the end of The Giggle and saying that his other self needs to rest, despite us now knowing that he's still suffering from hos past losses, just as silently as he was before

Taking your original call of seven that is just one point difference. I just wondered if you were trying to be kind about the SB episode. I agree with you though this was a much greater story.

I thought episode 1 and 2 were terrible. Not a fan of the new direction and tone. It feels like an adventures of Sarah Jane episode with a considerable budget. The Beatles were underdeveloped they had maybe 3 scenes (really they had one scene though) they’re completely forgotten about until the final scene and they have a moment? A moment barely set up and unmotivated. The writing is just terrible. It’s a shame that the show has all this money but no direction. The musical scene was cringe. The companion isn’t the best actress. The doctor is good in serious moments but him and companion have a very rushed forced chemistry (if you’d call it that). Just my opinion.
@Chhana_Me
@Chhana_Me 12 күн бұрын
Tbh honest the dr and his companion seems easily forced cause fans are often seduced by the typical male-female romantic relationship trope in the past. Without that, they are not perfect yes, but they are also literally supposed to be different. Like if the Dr come pick you up rn, you might not be a convincing character either. It's the fact that these things most people complain about are the things that everyone knows need to be realistically ugly,flawed and beautiful sometimes. In terms of personality and characterism, it is supposed to be like any kind of human interraction and relationship that can be awkward and cheesy

I'm getting kinda worried about Russell's writing. I don't like the you can fool a God once, but no more! It just reeks of contrivance. Balling up, silencing the Maestro and the Toymaker with the same excuse. When you're fighting Gods, you have to cheat. This new reboot is beautifully shot, but currently feels a little too superficial. Also not enjoying Ncuti's restoration of a butterfly to restore Ruby. Why, transform her! If you can just breathe it away. I'll still watch the rest of the series, and it's far more enjoyable than anything Chris wrote, but it feels a little disappointing... Sorry.

I would have been disappointed if an episode whose villain is the literal embodiment of music didn't have a musical number somewhere within it's runtime... It's like the end of the giggle, after the pantheon being is defeated some of their power is left over and almost impossible things are able to happen: 15 being able to split the TARDIS, people's emotions boiling over in a musical and the crossing becoming a piano The logic is there you just have to go with the flow.
