Canon EOS R5 Overheating Defeated?, How is Magic Lantern Involved? | NRR

It appears a tiny hack can defeat the recording limit on the Canon R5, by placing a tiny obstruction that prevents the camera from knowing if the battery compartment door is open. The hack works by removing the battery while the camera is getting ready to reach its thermal recording limit. By removing the battery in this operation, you prevent the camera from writing data to the NVRAM letting the camera know how long you've recorded. Once you reinsert the battery, the camera will reset the recording time.

While I appreciate the efforts of folks to find a workaround for the timers, the entire thing is still absurd and it’s on Canon, not their customers, to find a fix.

From my informal observations with my R5, the normal 4K is good, but the 4K HQ is phenomenal! I'm spoiled by it. and I'm encouraged that the 30-minute recording limit may actually be extended in firmware.

Most likely, this timer-thing is the work of the cripple hammer. But... It is possible, that Canon has problems with small pockets of heat that can't be transported from the sensor because IBIS reduces the connection between sensor and body. Canon probably didn't found a way to get around this and also no way to properly measure the temperature at the small hot spots in the sensor. So it is possible that they where forced to use the timer that makes sure the sensor isn't taking damage over time from high temperature or temperature differences that can create stress within the material. Since the knowledge about the timer and surface temperature measurements grows, I think it's time somebody with a bit of credibility should go for it and ask Canon what the heck is going on.

Nice summation. I would love to see someone test the camera temperature difference when shooting 8K and 4K HQ vs the lower quality 4K that the camera has no time limit for while using the hack to keep it recording beyond the timer limit. How hot does it get after 1 hour of 8K or 4KHQ vs the lower quality 4K that will record all day? That might tell us allot.

I believe the heat protection was poorly implemented at best. The only excuse, and it may not be a good one, is that they are concerned about the ambient temperature inside the camera more than the measurement of a peak temperature on a particular component. I don't know what is safe for the various components to be exposed to on an on-going basis, but at the very least they took some programming shortcuts. The fact that there doesn't seem to be even a spot-check of the temperature (the refrigerator test) to compare that against run-time is fishy, stupid, or both. Canon may have gotten their hand caught in the cookie jar because they hadn't tested the scenarios that their timer would expose itself and therefore didn't know you could literally take photos on and off for a time but not really significantly heating-up the camera but then be unable to record any video or too short of an amount to be useful. If they do have thermal limits to guard against - that is understandable. But they need to implement those safeguards properly and return so real functionality to the people buying these cameras for their hybrid and video capabilities.

This is purely a business decision. If canon released this camera with everything working perfectly it would be the camera of the century this pretty much will bankrupt, Sony, Nikon, and the others. Also the other problem for canon they will also go out of business because no one will upgrade probably for the next 5/7 years because they have the perfect camera and there's no need to upgrade

As soon as i heard 8k in a tiny little camera the first thing i thought was this camera will either melt or blow up LOL. The timers in the camera are to save its life so we can use the camera for many years to come. News flash people if you really thought this was a pro hollywood camera IT WAS NEVER GONNA BE THAT. It seems like you're missing the point. If the camera was using thermal data to determine when to shut off the camera people would be disappointed, but would understand. The issue is that the camera is shutting down arbitrarily while it's still well within safe operating temperatures

its pretty ridiculous to pull a battery while it's recording. Not only is it going to corrupt the footage, there's also potential to ruin the sd card and the camera's internals. Cameras (and every other electronic device nowadays) are like computers with a processor, ram, and internal memory, when the plug gets pulled out of the blue, there's going to be damage to the file systems. Pointless test none the less cuz no one in the right mind will do that just to get around the recording limit. Not surprised at all that Andrew Reid is the one who did it, cuz he's got some notorious claims on things he's said in the past and he just recently attacked Philip Bloom on twitter. Great video on your part, but I wouldn't use him as a source.

The hacks themselves may not be useful for video shooters, however they go towards proving the overheating warnings are at least partially artificial. That may shame Canon into a firmware update.
