I think you summed up the game really well. I've honestly never played a game that immersed me nearly as much as Space Station 14. Sure, not every round is memorable but the ones that are will be gaming moments I'll probably remember forever. I've met a lot of awesome people playing this game, and I appreciate the shoutout. I love seeing new players, and seeing the community grow.

It's a shame to see your propaganda rotting the minds of new players and locking them into an objectively inferior and content-lacking clone of the game by making it seem like a sequel rather than the rip-off it is. At least I can find solace in the fact that you will never achieve the depth and variety in stations the original has surpassed 10-fold, which will, in many cases, prompt people to remove their blindfolds and give Byond a try.

@@tritoner1221 Space Station is for the people who have went to *THE ASYLUM* and had their brains lobotomized. Even though I may have slight interest, I am taken back to the times I have played it. To unironically play on Fulpstation, stuck in a narrowminded playset style - and while I did experience some of Goonstation, I don't think I would ever come to be robust even after 200 hours of playtime? Can't remember. Don't _want_ to remember. There were good times, there were bad times, but I know in the end it was just a waste of my time. You have to be into the round-based gameplay, have the wiki stuff pulled up to see what interesting thing you want to try- *oh wait that's metagaming* -get into social aspects, but at that point it still drags on and gets boring. You feel as if there are greater things to do, but fidgeting around pointlessly with the higher mechanics in an attempt to be robust is the wrong approach. Hours poured in ... in hopes of being seen as a true spessman. For what? At the end, it's an egoistical play of lobotomy patients. Follow the rules or be shredded with bwoink. Play other servers... if you aren't risk averse it'll work, but if you are you'll get cold feet. You lock in with what has already been made familiar to you. Sorry, but this isn't Dark Souls or something of the like. If you are trying to kill megafauna for achievement or something on a /tg/ server, the only time you can try again is next round (which, in higher roleplay formats, you have to call a "shift"... but even if you try to roleplay speak and reference things that are basically out of game knowledge, it is verboten). In a place where knowledge is expected, where one can be stifled, holed up in their department... getting blown up or whatnot, you can see where the game fizzles out. And oh yeah. Lag and random disconnections. What about when you need to close out of the game and open it back up because of some confounding error? SS14 most likely has more future because it'll be on an optimized engine compared to BYOND. I'll never be able to escape the pseudo-trauma that playing spessmans has given me, though. In order to capture that gem of a moment you have to go through the slog of rounds. It did not help me that I was the aforementioned risk averse person, and may still be even now. You look to have fun, to gratify yourself with, perhaps, being a Roboticist, or dabbling in other science things. I was excited to learn how to refine anomalies to make a Phazon... Bluespace Bags, etc. (though mechs are and will always be mid, get better at CQC I guess) - but all that ends up being a lengthy endeavor to regularly use that knowledge, hope to get better at it, set it up a bit faster... In the end, you are better playing another game that focuses on industrials instead. It's a social experience, is what I hear. But I guess there's not much satisfactiong to be had when worrying if you'll be able to perform your tasks... be it because of incompetence or your bargain bin WiFi or laptop (performance)... hell, maybe the BYOND engine itself. I think my brain is beginning to play trumpets, oh me oh my. Enough of that, I'm going back to watching my videos and attempting to enjoy my day. Have a Blessed Day! Sincerely, Lamadon Pyreus

What I can't stress enough is that Space Station 14 actually benefits from people being idiots and new, and that if you feel apprehension about not being able to do your job correctly - don't! The game is centered around the idea of the station being a bunch of dumb idiots barely held together with shoestring; do the best you can, but you won't be yelled at (OOC) if you accidentally overdose a patient on 30 units of bicar, or if you give out one too many tools as an engineer and accidentally allow a syndicate agent free reign to start cutting wires all over the station. The fuck ups make a given round fun.
@thatboywags

I entirely agree. The best way to learn is to just jump in and start doing stuff. Personally I just get nervous I might be ruining someone's game experience. But then I remind myself it's really not that serious and next round I'll do a little better!

Something to note about ss14 is that each server can run the game in a greatly different way. Depending on the server you join, you can get mechanics that dont exist in other servers. Some have fully functioning AI systems, some have Psychic powers, Some are a persistent ship-based wild west economly simulator, some are built around being as insane as possible, and some are just the usual game with options for higher and lower RP levels.

SS13 player here. It's always remarkable to see the fact that SS14 has actually reached the point where the main devs could just drop the project at this point and it would be self-sustaining with the community. It's how 13 is still going after all... It finally broke the long-standing curse of remakes failing to gain traction. And I eagerly wait to see how far 14 will go.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention! Looks much better without the more restrictive grid-based movement and sprites! I think it'd be fun to see you play more of this too, kinda like how you do your Shadows of Doubt videos, or however you think would be fitting for this game!

That's what I've heard from others too, is that they like the free movement compared to the locked grid on 13. The feeling of nostalgia this brought me back from when I just started hit DEEP. When your just starting there’s a feeling around you where you don’t get what’s going on around you but it’s still extremely fun, and I’m glad to see more people get into it and you enjoy it. I hope you look around with the other servers too and enjoy your stay! Also, being thrown into SS14 first instead of SS13 is possibly the best way to adjust to the learning curve cause… well, if you’ve even seen the character menu it’s enough to send you into a shock.

Oh, wait, I didn't know you played SS14! Makes sense, I suppose. The heavy interaction of a bunch of deep mechanics to create a chaotic but internally-logical (by cartoon logic at least) world in which you have freedom to improvise toward your character's goals overlaps somewhat with Shadows of Doubt, as does the investigation theme somewhat (depending on role and game mode), with the extra addition of the extra social aspect and chaos source from it being (very) multiplayer. I'm kind of obsessed with this kind of 'graphical MUD/first-generation-MMORPG' style of 'sandbox' game design even though AFAIK it's largely extinct other than the 'living fossil' of SS13/SS14. To think about it crossing over with... -- Immersive sims? I guess you'd call SoD an immersive sim? -- is interesting to me. Maybe not all the lessons of those games were lost to the industry, even though mechanics-heavy immersive sims are also... let's say endangered. They at least have some 'horizontal gene transfer' with mainstream lineages like first person shooters, at least historically. I suppose there's also some crossover of SS13-like games with mechanics-heavy traditional roguelikes like Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead and their realtime and/or multiplayer descendants/imitators/re-imaginings (Project Zomboid, etc.), but that's more of a stretch, and again, not a mainstream genre. It's a pity, I had presumed that games would get more complex and simulationist (not necessarily simulating reality, simulating SOME kind of internally-consistent world) as technology advanced, but in large part they didn't. Sure, the cosmetic portions of the presentation -- IK, graphics, facial animation, etc. -- got more elaborate (and MUCH more expensive), but largely the games industry seems to focus on mechanically simpler titles. I can't really think of much actual new 'gameplay tech' that has developed since the 2000s. Really, the budgets (and amount of management) have ballooned to the point where you can never risk a project that 'some people might not get', I suppose. It's mostly only in niche indie spaces where you see really complicated or unusual games being attempted, and by nature then they don't have the budget to get too wild with research and development. I guess I can just hope for a renaissance of mechanically complicated games as the shift to open-source engines, libraries, etc. put more technically-challenging games within the reach of smaller and more niche teams every year.

@@thatboywagsYeah, SS14 is a considerably simplified remake of SS13, which is much less "noob" friendly. Reason why it's always been a rather niche game, having a very, very steep learning curve. Having to learn the billion hotkeys, the billion complicated "realistic" mechanics that are still far from coming to SS14 (technically being still a mere alpha/beta of 13, missing a crapton of content), having to deal with the archaic, convoluted UI on the same levels of a MMORPG, having also to remember by memory which commands and keys to use for each specific action or radio channel, the more "zealous" people of certain servers being pretty unwelcoming to new players or just shitters/hostile in general... It's not easy.
@UndyingZombie

@@FunnyStripes There is also the added issue when it comes to SS13.. Where both UI and control schemes also depend on the codebase said server is using. Oh, there's a lot in SS13 that hasn't yet made it to 14 yet but could. Surgery is like one of the really big mechanics. with things like broken bones, internal bleeding, limb replacements, implants etc. There are also a bunch of antags that haven't made it to 14 yet, like blob, sentient virus and terror spiders (I think? or are they added already?). Another big one is the station AI role.

@@Kenionatus yea a lot of antags are missing and magic is more or less nonexistant unless an admin does an event, even then there are only magic staffs and no actual independent spells. I have heard that surgery is coming soon though, so lets hope for that. There are big spiders but they are all the same and there is no brood mother so typically people take the fifteen or so ghost roles fight for a bit kill some people then die and life goes on. They can make webs but unless they actually try to make a nest, which I've never seen someone do, it doesn't matter except for spiders placing webs in combat to slow people.

Frontier turned me off entirely when the Station Traffic Controller basically chewed me out for not using their proper docking procedure when I was just starting out. I'm totally into RP, but the entire attitude was just such a turnoff. Like, let me just do shit for a while and maybe fuck off with your procedures at first, would ya? I really wanted to like it too, which was a bummer, because learning the ropes of that Server is a huge hurdle compared to other Servers, as losing money risks crippling you for a _long_ time unless you just reroll or Crew up. Like, the effort of just getting set up, learning to fly and be self-sustainable and actually financially functional was challenging and complex enough without me being stepped on by some hyper-stressed, power tripping STC. I don't think I'll be coming back to Frontier, which is a shame, because I really did want to like it.

I *WAS* wondering whether the title was a typo... because I do remember the game being Space Station 13. Seeing you play this, it's drastically different from what I had experienced years ago (when Sseth played it). Controls for the game was confusing as fuck. I remember going to a room with people, just asking "how to do X" or if they could teach me. Pressed / did some stuff that I didn't know. Then they told me that I jumped on a crate, did a backflip, landed on my neck, and now I'm paraplegic and I can't move. I don't know if that really / could happen, but yeah I couldn't move lol. Anyway, found out that SS14 is an "improvement" / project to improve SS13. So hopefully, I could actually play this time... but hot damn if that wasn't a funny experience.

I made content for ss13 that's very similar to your style of content where you try to turn the game into more of an immersive TV show for the viewer. There's absolutely an audience for ss13/14 content in the style you make most of your shadows of doubt content.

@potatolad7202

Well its moreso that SS13 is an old game and that BYOND, the engine it runs on, is even older. To quote SSeth, a very popular game reviewer, “10/10, don’t play it. Because frankly, the servers can’t handle you all.” Due to SSeth making a review of SS13, his fanbase flocked to almost every server, causing a ‘tide’ of new players, who mainly played as Assistants (or Passengers, in SS14 terms) who, as part of their default uniform, wear grey jumpsuits. All in all, players mainly don’t like when people make reviews or view said reviews because that inevitably means another ‘Greytide’ hits the servers. (Greytide being a lot of assistants, clad in grey.) Of course I do not speak for everyone, to each their own. Also as someone who plays SS13.. Ew, Antimatter engine..

This was a great video, Wags! I bounced off of 13 a long time ago, but started playing 14 about a week ago (on Delta- V.) It's just... incomparable. Everyone is typically pretty chill (unless they're stressed out, which is bound to happen,) but the level of RP on display and people just being fun to be around is such an experience. If you're already decent at RP, the only issue you'll really have to get around is adapting to the game mechanically and learning the responsibilities of each role, some of which are legitimately intense both RP and gameplay-wise (Medical, Security) and/or mechanically complex (Chemistry, Engineering/Atmos). I've never played a game where both my real life experience (as actual, real life Security) and my writing experience have been so compatible. Truly a unique experience. Edit: I recommend starting out in Botany, Science/Epistemics (on Delta) or Cargo, as they're all pretty reasonable and chill departments that operate on their own timetable and have combinations of complexity and simplicity that allow you to dive as deep as you want into the game's systems without necessarily getting overwhelmed. Also, don't worry about getting anxious or shy at first when people come up and ask you for things, it's perfectly understandable to just not _know_ things at first. That's why the "A" roles of Cadet/Assistant/Intern exist by department, so you don't have to worry about getting chewed out too bad if you screw up. If you accidentally let the Clown take your department's Autolathe, it just might lead to hilarious hijinks! That being said, Roles are typically on a first-come-first-serve basis, so if you end up in a Department you're unfamiliar with, don't worry about it. Take advantage of the learning opportunity. For non-Department roles, Janitor is _always_ highly recommended as a Job to start with for new players because you're still useful to the ship as a member of the Crew (I always appreciate a good Jani), you get to interact with people at your own pace (typically) _and_ you usually get involved in ridiculous situations just by the nature of your work. There are a ton of reasons why it's one of the most quickly taken jobs in the game. And if you just want to chill, just Greytide us as Passengers or whatever. The worst case scenario is that you'll be ignored because you're Grey, letting you adapt at your own pace, and the best case scenario is that people will either just legitimately engage with you or use you as a hostage, letting you get swept up in how 14 _really_ works without having to commit to the innate stresses of actual, Departmental responsibility. You might even get Hired/Promoted or Deputized into a Department in an emergency, anyways, or better (worse, for me as Security) you might even become part of the Revolution to take over the Station!

Tried SS13 a while back but the controls were just to weird for me. Wish listed SS14 on steam. How are the controls for SS14?
@thatboywags
@thatboywags Жыл бұрын
They're not too bad, especially if you often play PC. A lot of the interactions are done via menu. So the majority is just learning how to work your inventory and the quick controls for certain things. Again, Liltenhead makes some great guides for beginners and points out controls you wouldn't normally realize right away.
