I don't know if it's wrong to say, but to me disappearances are almost worse than a person being dead. At least if they're dead, you know it. It's final. If they're missing, there's just so much unknown. I can't even imagine how that feels.

I am a Scout leader in Southern California. Our slowest hiker sets the pace. We hike in a group. If a hiker needs to pause, we all pause. We never leave hikers behind. Jared Negrete's story is a both a cautionary tale and reminder of how Scout outing guidelines (two deep leadership, buddy system) have changed over time.

Boy Scouts is a joke. Of course there has to be a safe place for kids to be coddled instead of provided a safe place that also teaches them how to better themselves even if it means them following the fastest in the pack. Boy Scouts is part of the democratic, "Gender is just a social construct" problem our society is currently in. Boy Scouts let's girls in too which is downright pathetic. At least we know that the leaders of the scouts don't always just like little boys.

That part made me angry and sad as well. I would've trailed behind right beside him and at his pace tried to chat our way up the mountain at our own pace. You miss some beautiful sights always racing to the next destination anyway. Granted, you have to be at your campsite before it starts getting dark or even before that to get settled in but I digress, I just couldn't leave somebody behind and not have that decision eat at me every second, every step. For some, it seems so simple, and I'll never understand how some can be so nonchalant and even lack a natural empathetic nature for others! Everyone regardless of how fast or slow has something that they can contribute but because we view somebody as "too slow, out of shape, and/or wasting time" they the boy like a discarded wrapper alongside the trail that you swear you'll be back to pick up. ❤ Poor lad.

A man lured my sister over saying he had candy and makeup for her. The man picked her up had her in the truck and was leaving with her she was about 4, this was around 1990. This was in Illinois. The only reason my sister is alive and well today is because a girl named ‘Angel’ (no joke) who was my friend went up to him and said “if you don’t put her down and let her go there’s men inside with guns and they will shoot you.” Idk but he took her out of the dark blue truck and let her go. I was inside using the bathroom at the time. I was 7. To this day I’ve wondered how many children he got away with……this legit gave me goosebumps. (The Michael story)

This was pretty common practice decades ago. Especially if you were out of shape and couldn't keep up with the majority of the kids, they would keep going. The "lesson" was essentially a roundabout way for you to learn that your lack of fitness means you'll be left behind or won't be able to do what your fellow friends can do. It translated to not just physical abilities but social skills. It sounds harsh, but nowadays, it's so reversed that everyone is reduced to the lowest common denominator so we're *all* left behind.

Specially a freaking 12 year old. When I was a scout, we were watched like hawks even though my last time at the camp, I was 16 years old. And preparing to be a scout leader and yet my scout leader wouldn’t let anyone stagger. Even going to the bathroom in the bushes, she would follow us and make us talk to her all the whole time while keeping an eye on the rest of the group. And I knew the forest very very well and was a guide as I lived close while everyone lived over a hundred kilometers away. She still wouldn’t let me go anywhere alone. We had a buddy system and were told to keep an eye on each other. She was definitely a bit more vigilant than the other scout leaders in the camp but honestly I appreciate it now. She usually has young children she looks after. So she probably developed that extra vigilance as kids are dumb. But she’ll keep that with everyone no matter what. I loved her. And even going camping with her as an adult felt safe. And to this day, I still follow the buddy system to a T.

Those of you shocked at the Scout Leader's actions may not know that while Boy Scouts themselves are rigorously tested and vetted before moving up the ranks in the Scouts, a Scout Leader is often just whatever random adult they can find to do it. They are often unqualified in outdoor survival and notoriously uncaring about their charges. I know because I was a Boy Scout and all of my Scout Leaders were ner-do-wells.

It's ?almost? worse than having found them killed, because then we'd "know". My aunt spent thousands of dollars on private detectives after the police more-or-less gave up, to no avail. I've had to assume he's deceased, especially given the age of nearly-100 he'd be now. But, there's always a question, and wondering what happened or why. It's something no one understands. As a kid and a girl scout, I never understood why my parents never let me go on trips or anywhere without one of them. Even with close friends' parents. I was always SO butthurt about it. As an adult, a former nanny, and an aunt... *I GET IT* OMG. I hope these families find answers and peace. And I hope they understand we're _respectfully_ learning from these examples. My sister tells me all the time her oldest kids are fine if we're all (5 adults) watching them, even if they're too far away for me to touch/grab them. That's not a risk I, as an aunt, am willing to take. It's a fine line between independence and safety.

I was molested by a family friend and I'm thankful I couldn't have kids. I would be an absolute wreck when they weren't in my sight if I had them. I still only fully trust my parents and look way to deep into people's motives or my made up ulterior motives of what they are up too. My Mexican ex wife's sister got impregnated by their first cousin after she got out of prison for meth. She had two children before prison and got them because both their dad's were in prison when she got out. I knew before the family did because my senses let me know the first time meeting her. I said to my brother in law that his sister's boyfriend is pretty cool. He said "that's my cousin, they are just roommates". She was pregnant 1 month later. They moved from Texas to Mississippi because inbreeding is legal there. She had two kids and the daughter was 14 when she came to stay with my wife and I during the summer. She told my wife and I how the cousin step-dad dad tried to get her drunk and high when everyone was gone but them. I told my wife she's telling you this because she's scared and can't tell her mom. She said my cousin wouldn't do that. I said "your cousin fucks his 1st cousin nightly and she looks like your sister but is younger and genetically more diverse". It was the end of our marriage basically after that. She wouldn't tell her sister what was going on and I couldn't take it. I my eyes she was asking for help.

You can't see it well but there were several notes handwritten on the impound notice! I thought it was annoying they would use something like that too, at first - but they I realized that the bright red of the impound notice would be much more noticeable and durable should she ever happen to return to the car, so now I think it was definitely the right way to try and leave her a note!!!!

i usually don't like to blame people involved in these cases (besides the ones who had harmful intent and did the murdering/ kidnapping etc), but that boy scout leader leaving that kid in a forest because he was too slow... just total neglect. So many things could have gone wrong and obviously did.

I said this in reply to another comment, but I think the boy was being sincere - except it was some trick of his subconscious mind (probably after seeing a missing-person poster or a story about it on TV), conflating the memory with what he was seeing out the window.

It's possible that the 3-year old imagined he saw the lady in the poster but none of the pictures on that missing-person poster featured a black shirt. He might not have seen a ghost but he clearly had some sort of extra sensory power and picked up on Sandy standing, probably, where she died. She had gone in a big loop and was nearly back to where her campsite had been. That story really got to me. (I would never go camping and hiking in a remote area where there are supposedly no people.)

Hoping someday soon you cover the strange disappearance of Judy Martins from Kent State University in Ohio in 1978. She left a party and vanished on the way to or from her dorm minutes later. Years later a prostitute matched her description but the family said it likely wasn’t her, and then the lady of the night commented “Judy Martins is better off dead” Very little leads. She grew up in Avon Lake Ohio
