Kylr Yust lived in Kansas City, and dated Kara Kopetsky. When she disappeared, all eyes were on Kylr. He would tell stories, lots of them, to lots of people about what happened. Nothing would be done, until he did it again, when he met Jessica Runions.

This happened in my hometown of Belton, and it was infuriating because we all knew Yust did it but the police did absolutely nothing. I actually worked at the place Jessica used to work at and I worked with her boyfriend and it was heartbreaking to hear him talk about Jessica and he would always say “I don’t know why she left with Kylr that night but it’s my biggest regret letting her”. Jessica’s death was a 100% preventable but the police were incompetent as always.

@@kevinmeeks5169 Kara left the school with him and was later killed in 2007. In 2016, he killed Jessica. If the police did their job, Jessica would be alive. Yust was not some genius mastermind, he confessed about 7 times to different people that he killed Kara. If the police were competent he should have been in jail long before he had the opportunity to kill another person. They had 9 years to figure it out.

And the fact he felt safe enough to put Jessica's body not to Kara that's pretty ballsy when you already know you're being "investigated" or maybe he knew he wasn't being involved. I'd look very closely at who retired or left the sherif and police departments before this case got its second wind maybe thats why he peed his pants when he was involved in a traffic stop, because he knew he didn't have that protection anymore. What a slap in the face to Jessica’s family! There’s no way her murder was second degree. He deliberately put her body near Kara’s
@TheAce12570
@TheAce12570 3 жыл бұрын
What does where he put the body have to do with it? First degree means a murder was pre-planned. For example, if a killer brought a knife and tape and waited in the dark to ambush their victim. Second degree is for spontaneous crimes. From the information we got from the video, this seems like one of those. He saw an opportunity to feed his sick desires and he took it. I agree that he should have gotten a worse sentence (at least life in prison without the possibility of parole), and personally, I don't understand why second-degree murders have a lesser sentence to begin with, just because someone murders another person on an impulse rather than planning it that doesn't make the victim any less dead, but that's beside the point. From the video, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that he went to the party with the intent to kill Jessica, therefor the murder was second-degree.

@@CLBellamey I agree. I’ve been following this case since Kara went missing. The reason he was charged with manslaughter was most likely because of credibility issues with some of those he confessed to. And although everyone knew he did it since day one, there was no forensic proof. Therefore, the manslaughter charge would be easier to attain than a 2nd or 3rd degree murder, rather get something than nothing. But they also knew they had him dead to rights on Jessica’s death. I’m sure Karas family was filled in on that and had some say. Prosecutors usually do get input from a victim’s family.

I understand the sentiment but in reality it isn't so simple. The fact that there was no physical evidence, and at the time, not even a body- that speaks volumes for the decisions that the Belton law enforcement made. You want to be sure before trying to arrest and convict a person on such an important case. Could they have taken the witnesses' accusations more seriously? Absolutely. Should they have, legally speaking? I'm not so sure. You have people who falsely claim to be responsible for a number of atrocities, and I'm sure, have many more who claim someone they know has claimed that responsibility. No body, no proof- just heresay. I think ppl should give a bit more slack to the police involved is my point. They're playing chess, not checkers, and hindsight is 20/20.

Even his friend had to admit that Kylr was nuts when they found the dead cat and upon confrontation, Kylr said he did it because he thought it was just hilarious to watch animals die. He was always lighting animals on fire and swinging them around by their tails. He killed helpless animals and started fires for shits and giggles. I have several people that I care about who met him and immediately got goosebumps the second they looked into his dead eyes. Their intuition spoke to them and they are alive because of it. He bragged openly at parties about murdering Kara to so many people, always thinking he was smarter than anyone in the room. I can't believe the genius plan to blame his brother (who committed suicide, and couldn't defend himself) for these murders didn't work. Have fun in your retirement home, Kylr - believe me when I say, no one will miss you. I just wish someone would have sat down with Jessica and warned her or she'd still be alive today. At least the families now have some peace. I do feel bad for his Grandpa, this is a situation where no one comes out a winner. Same here. Sounds like my abusive high school boyfriend. He was nuts. Would show up everywhere I went & if I wouldn't leave w/ him immediately, he would threaten to go kill my dog!!! He played football & would quiz me after the games to make sure I watched him the whole time & not off talking to any guys.Then he would just accuse me anyways & knock me around. Thank GOD I got away from him & married a real!!! man.

Thank you for telling this story. I live in the Kansas City metro area on the Kansas side, and there was another abduction/murder that happened around the same time as Kara's in another town nearby. Because of (in my opinion) mainly socioeconomic differences, the two cases were handled very, very differently; on the Kansas side, the victim and the murderer were found within 2 weeks. Anyway, my point is, a lot of people don't talk about Kara Kopetsky without comparing it to this other case as well, and they aren't objectively very similar so I don't think doing so serves either woman's memory. So just, thanks for telling this story on its own.

You can't convict based on "he told me he did it!" but not a spec of physical evidence, and most importantly, no body. Would you accept the verdict if your brother or father was convicted with only someone's say-so? Even with skeletal remains (finally, and I followed thiese cases for years), the jury gave him a slap on the wrist for Kara's murder -- 10 years for manslaughter. Jessica's case got him a few more years in jail, but he'll still be out on mandatory minimum, pissed, inked, and ready for more. God help us because the jury did not, in the end.

In this case, Cass County and Belton messed up so bad that Yust was able to be a free man to again be involved with the death of another youg lady and the piece of shit took her body to the same place. If Cass County had the statements as well as knew all that happened to Kara, why did they wait to file murder charges only years after it happened to Kara and then he was able to do the same to Jessica Runions? The police told me they knew who did it, ( referring to Kara in 2013). They stated that they just “wanted” more evidence. So, I have to ask then, was another death enough - Cass County and Belton?A retired KCMO police officer stated that Belton messed this case up years before Runion’s death. There were numerous TIPs to the TIPs hotline, Belton and Cass Co. They failed in locking Yust up years prior to Runions death. I have more knowledge of this case and was reported to authorities for sharing this information. Belton and Cass County prosecutor both tried all they could to lock me up. While I prefer remorse over nothing a remorseful person would accept the due punishment, and I think once you are convicted of first or second degree murder life in prison is the appropriate punishment. A murderer may very well feel remorse but that doesn't mean they aren't still a danger to society and it doesn't mean they won't do it again. We rehabilitate addicts and robbers, not murderers.

When you commit a crime in the 90', confess it to many people who, in turn, tell the police but still you listen to your sentence wearing a mask because of the pandemic it means the investigation was not that excellent....

So the parents file a restraining order on Kylr, and Kara disappears the next day... then he strangles the next girl, and they're worried about her cats. With 8 people telling the cops of his confession, and the tape recording, I think they could have pressed him harder than they did. If they would have followed up on these calls, Jessica may have been alive today.

Did that happen during the trial? I saw the part in this video where the woman kept saying he peed himself but none of what you mentioned. She certainly didn't do anything special. I'm actually surprised how well he played it on the stand, only a true sociopath can put on a performance like that when they've murdered two innocent women. Reminds me of how convincing Bundy could sometimes be in court.

Prosecutors don't interrogate. Interrogation is when a case is being built. The case was already built and the prosecutor is trying to secure a guilty verdict based on the collected evidence.
