Hi Mike! This happened in my hometown when I was a kid. I remember the news coverage. When I was older, I worked in a retail store. Mel Ignatow came in after his jail sentence for perjury. He needed bits and bobs for his new place. When it was time to pay, his credit card didn't work due to inactivity. We had to call and get it reinstated and he had to say he'd been in jail over the phone. I knew who he was and now he knew I knew who he was. It was awkward for me but he seemed fairly unbothered. It was such a creepy interaction to me.

@@ContactsNfilters I thought the same thing but figured all those charges must have been incorporated in his trial for Brenda's murder. I doubt the authorities would have missed the opportunity if any of that was still on the table.

I don't care who set this girl up with this guy: they should be sorry for doing so. I hope they have appropriate regrets. LADIES: if you have doubts like Brenda did, and ESPECIALLY when somebody "love bombs" you in the beginning..and THEN it turns bad, you NEED to 1. make your plans (in secret) and 2. get help and 3. get OUT! 4. And if you hooked up with the right people that will help you with your new identity, new location and everything else; you may need to do this to stay safe. There is help out there, from what I've heard, but you have to look for it. I'd probably find a police friend somehow or start in a church. ((I just want to say I really enjoyed this podcast and generally I do NOT enjoy podcasts, because I want to see the faces of both the narrator's and the people they're talking about. But the personal details and the depth that you both went into with this collaboration really made it especially good.

Enjoyed your podcast very much. Your discussing the fact that once being found "not guilty", you cannot stand trial again for the same crime reminded me that years ago in Scotland, they had the verdict of "Not proven" instead of "Not guilty". This verdict would surely open the way to be able to be tried for the same crime twice.

They found Brenda behind our home and my parents were renting from Mel when they discovered it. I was 3 year old so I don’t really remember when the cops showed up and raided our home. However the story heard from my father and mother. Is insane. Thank you for doing what I asked when I messaged you. Brenda is the reason I went into medical career. She deserves to have her story told.

Thanks for covering this terrible crime. Happened in my hometown (won't hate on pronunciation because even locals don't say it right). True story: years after this happened I was sitting in a DMV waiting to renew my license and a familiar looking guy was sitting across from me. Couldn't place him but he seemed really familiar. Only later did I realize it was Ignatow. Very disturbing experience.

This is why the double jeopardy clause should not apply to rape, murder or child molestation. If new evidence is found or evidence that was there originally was not introduced during trial then they should be able to try the same person again. However, this needs to go the other way as well. Did you know that discovering evidence that proves you are innocent is not enough to get a new trial or overturn a wrongful conviction??? That is just absurd to me.

Sometimes defense lawyers should just sit on there hands a bit. Just don't try so hard when it's clear the defendants are guilty.
@Shedoesdiy
@Shedoesdiy Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that's illegal. The defendant could have the lawyer booted, and get a new one (on the taxpayers dollar, of course) or worse- have the whole trial thrown out. We can't always *know for certain* whether someone is actually guilty. Plenty of innocent people incarcerated right now can attest to that. Therefore everyone deserves a competent legal defense.

This is why we shouldn't always jump into conclusion over police not charging someone for years even tho from the outside perspective it seems like a no-brainer. Sure, there's a whole lot of instances where police just doesn't give a damn or is incompetent, but if you only have one chance, you better make sure it's as solid as it can be, because him just saying "yeah, I did it" and nothing can be done about it is so infuriating. Glad they could at least take him down over perjury.
@itarry4
@itarry4 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree. It's why the process where in Britain where I live it's the DPS I think it's initially the U.S. Attorney but if they think there might be enough then it's a Grand Jury but the process of going over all of the evidence gathered by the police, FBI, forensics, etc to see if they have enough to justify a trial is so important. It's easy for the people directly involved to over state, or see the evidence they've worked so hard to get as more conclusive than it actually is so independent eyes are very important not just so cases don't waste the courts time but as you said so they don't attempt to get a conviction from desperation or as they're being pressured and make it impossible to ever convict the guilty person due to them getting not guilty. Thankfully the double jeopardy law no longer exists as it did in Britain. If there's very strong new evidence then a panel of judges will decide if its enough to retrial and whilst it's still rare and not easy to get strong enough evidence it is possible now.

Double Jeopardy is so maddening when we have cases such as poor Charlie Vaughn in Arkansas. He's an innocent man who has currently served 32 years in Arkansas prisons for a murder that he didn't commit. Charlie is developmentally delayed & at the time of his conviction there was substantial evidence that he not only didn't commit the murder, there was absolutely no way he could. But the US (un)justice system would rather have any body even if its the wrong body locked away in prison. Plot twist, in 2015, the real killer wrote Charlie a letter apologizing that Charlie is serving time for a murder HE & he alone committed. The real murder has gone on record to confess to the crime & has offered to testify on Charlie's behalf so Charlie can be freed. This year, Charlie's lawyer applied for a pardon from Arkansas governor Sarah Huckabee. Unfortunately, he missed the deadline for filing and Sarah Huckabee herself is currently in the middle of "Lecturngate", she defrauded the state by falsely claiming that she spent $19,000 on a new lecturn. When in fact what she did was pay her friend who does NOT sell lecturns, $19,000. They then took this $19,000 & partied extravagantly in Paris. Why $19,000? Because it was the cut off point. Even a penny over & she would have had to report it, itemize it, get approval etc. So back to innocent Charlie Vaughn. Sarah Huckabee made a HUGE deal of pretending to be tough on crime & snidely making a show of denying his pardon & laughed while saying he can try applying again in 6 years. Then she made a huge play of pardoning the Thanksgiving turkey so it could be free to live a happy life. Where is the justice in a system that knowing has to let a killer walk free while simultaneously taking great pleasure in keeping an innocent man in prison when the real killer is also already serving time & confessed? There is none. 😔😢 *It's Arkansas, a blind eye can not be turned to the fact that Charlie is a black man. A mentality handicapped black man imprisoned in the Bible Belt.

Great idea about canning double jeopardy in some instances, guys, where guilt can be proved 100%. That sounds like a very reasonable and sensible idea. However, I doubt that POS would have made any kind of confession if he was aware that he could be taken to trial on it again. Gotta wonder what the hell is inside some ppl that they can be like he was. Or even Mary. Her involvement was just as bad if you ask me. The worst of it for Brenda, by the sounds of it, probably occurred when Mary was present. And there was some justice I guess in how he died, but not nearly enough.
