Please keep us posted on how the Whiteline setup holds up to your daily driving. There are a lot of people that bad mouth the Whiteline Watts Link because its priced cheaper than most of the other diff style watts links out there and they say the design doesn't hold up as well on the street. Since you drive your car all the time, it'll be great to see how it performs.

Sn197 chassis’s are a 3 link setup (one upper control arm and 2 lower ) while older sn95s are a 4link set up (2 upper and 2 lower.) And with a watts link you don’t need the Panhard bar anymore. With a watts link you can set up to loosen or tighten the rear handling.

I did the same upgrade to my GT500 - Whiteline Watts Link and Roush upper control arm. Also have the same Steeda rear sway bar as you do. You will have to grind down the spot you pointed out in your video to get the sway bar to fit. This set up works awesome. My GT500 has 654 to the wheels. The car handles the power much better and cornering is a night and day difference. You will enjoy your upgrade to a watts link.

The watts link does help with stability control but it doesn't prevent mustang drivers from crashing. I have owned live axle or solid rear axle (SRA) Mustang for over 12 years now. They are actually better at regaining control of a loose rear end compared to independent rear suspension in the light of spirited/hard driving. The reason why its better in my honest opinion is because the SRA is one solid piece which gives it better contact patch on the road when the rear is sliding from under you. When the IRS slides out from under you, *you're dealing with unstable movement from both sides of the rear end* compared to a solid piece that is moving a lot less.

That sway bar modified fitment is easy modification with no cutting. Slide the sway bar support arm inward to clear the watts link end. It only has to slide an inch or so. Won't affect performance. Then do a side mount to the existing body mount. Need to add a snug fitting spacer block or steel pipe section inside the existing mount for rigidity and strength. Use a long high strength bolt to secure it all. Just like a side mounted shock.

How's that watts link holding up? or rather how is that fancy diff cover holding up? I'm curious how much weight this watts link adds if any. it doesn't look nearly as heavy since it uses the diff cover. wish it were cheaper though. IRS is so heavy in comparison and can't handle nearly as much power as the 8.8.

Recently did a full suspension upgrade on a SN95, I have yet to get it through some twists but due to the light weight and low ride height it *stays on the ground and goes exactly where you point it* still needs some nice summer performance tires but it does fine as is. Also, didn't know they kept using the 8.8 even in the SN197s

The S197 was supposed to have an IRS, but Ford thought it was too expensive. You can get an IRS for the car if you wanna spend about $8k. I don't know how well it would support drag racing or high-HP applications (500 or higher).
@stzgolf6 жыл бұрын
Any plans to do a video update & review on Smurf after your Watts Link install? I'm curious what your thoughts are after the upgrade (pros and cons) and how you think this upgrade on your S197 stacks up against the IRS on a S550
@fcardona846 жыл бұрын
Ford took so long to go IRS because it works so well for drag racing. Nobody bought a mustang to carve curves like a European sports car will.
@devil5oh5836 жыл бұрын
supra driven Incorrect. The IRS on the mustang is not meant for drag racing, it is more meant for cornering, and rally. The live rear axle is in fact the best suspension for drag racing
@FullThrottleFirearms6 жыл бұрын
I think thats what supra driven was trying to say, (SRA) works so well for drag racing. But you have to remember the terminator cobra in the early 2000's came with an IRS, which ford should have kept.
@joshvaz006 жыл бұрын
WatchThisRightNow he worded it badly but you misinterpret
@fcardona846 жыл бұрын
My bad. Just read what I typed. It came out backwards. Solid live axle is the best for drag racing. It’s imho best suited for the mustang. I mean, are most people buying mustangs for road course or for drag racing? Maybe the reason why it’s not that big of an issue is because of hwy/roll racing nowadays and so people don’t care about the solid axle anymore.

Talking to a Ford engineer many years ago I brought up the question about why they don't use IRS on the Mustang except for certain models like the Cobra...The answer...Cost! But he did point out that the second reason was that many Mustang owners preferred the the live axle for the drag strip. I personally thought the second reason was a copout or a lie because it really was about money.

All that lateral force placed on diff cover bolts? I'm surely not the only one questioning the amount of stress placed those bolts?
@usahd77456 жыл бұрын
stefan samotulka That's what I was thinking but I'm suspecting the bolts are beefed up or something along those lines.
@hamonthvac6 жыл бұрын
Joseph HD They have to be higher rated no doubt. It just seems like you'd want an overkill solution and 12 or whatever harder bolts doesn't seem like that to me. I'd except a system to have a weld on ring or 2 piece tube to the axle tubes. And use it as a mounting point.
@HotboiEngineering6 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind my numbers are extremely conservative, but each bolt being a Grade 8 bolt, they have about 1000 pounds of clamping force, and at least 1000 pounds of sheer load. And that's just 1, there's several on the diff cover. I would be more worried about the bolts that hold the link to the diff cover.
@hamonthvac6 жыл бұрын
Brap Brap yea it seems great. I'm sure it's fine and overkill as it is. I just like overkill for everything. Without a sway bar as well I'm sure it takes more force but is still well within safety.

I’d rather have the live rear axle over the IRS. Ford had IRS back in the day (the 03/04 cobras has it) I’ve seen guys swap out the IRS for LRA. Better for drag racing. But that WATTS link is badass and gives you the best of both worlds.

@lobbyrobby3 жыл бұрын
I just bought a 2020 gt pp1. I've had 3 stangs in the past and never really cared about cornering. However this car feels planted. Wheel hop sucks so I'm putting in the bmr cradle lockout level 2.
