TURBOCHARGED V6 GMC Typhoon Review! Eating V8's For Breakfast

The GMC Typhoon and GMC Syclone made absolutely no sense to build as a business decision - but they did it anyway! With a turbocharged V6 from the factory this SUV was the Jeep Track hawk of the past. What's even funnier is that this SUV was faster than most sports cars of the time including some Ferrari's - yikes. So is the legendary Typhoon as fun to drive as its legacy says? Let's for a rip.

You have to remember, this was 1991. I got my license in 78, there were still some muscle cars around but for the most part cars were dogs and getting worse every year. The early 80's were the dark ages in performance cars, they didn't exist. When these things came out it was performance unheard of since 1970, that is why they are so legendary. Not that they were crazy fast in general, but compared to what was being passed off as performance cars that were no more that sticker packages they were rocket ships.

You don't really need to because the 4.3 is a better engine than the 3.6. Just fix the crap that doesn't work like the stock factory wiring harness, the ECU, use holley or any other aftermarket stand alone system. The 4.3 vortex engine can last to 500k miles if maintained. It also has a V8 rumble because it's a bigger v6. I own GMC typhoon number 2001 and a 87 grandnational. Both modified. The 3.6 in my old 2012 camaro had 323 hp and hit 0 to 60 in 5.9. The stock typhoon in 5 1. The fully loaded camaro v6 also weighs more than a typhoon. 3800 typhoon to 3999 camaro v6 rs. Like my grandnational I have had scat pack challenge it from a dig. Wrong move. It's 500hp and 600tq will destroy most factory v8s outside of the hellcats, shelby mustangs, and ZL1 camaros. When boost hit I'm flowing with the power of a 7.6 liter big block engine without the weight. My GN build is at the safest to maintain the engine for longer and is considered mild. I know guys pulling nine second quater miles.

Saw a Syclone a few weeks ago rip at least a 0-100mph at a red light. It was nice to see them still in use on the road.

Wanted one ever since i could drive in the late 90s, made the dream happen a few years ago, Absolutely love my 93' They have their quirks but any owner of one, knows that ahead of time. The power is very usable from a dig, but do leave a bit desired up top, runs out of steam. But thats what mods are for!

This is soooo cool man, this and the cyclone are two cars that i would daily and drive the shit out of this things, they're not, like, ultra fast and stuff, but they are, probably the most cool suv'ish, pickup'ish, don't know how to call it....

They were not hard to modify either. I had a friend who ran low 12's in his. He sold it and got a 2nd gen CTS-V.

I’ve seen them and they are sweet, I love the red and grey two tone paint scheme, but never get to see that spec! It was a great idea of gmc making that in my opinion

People upped the boost on these, and they were tuff to beat street racing. The funky rear wing is to help keep the rear window clean in crappy weather.

To open the hood on an old GM truck, you gotta bang on it while pulling the latch. Works everytime

It surprises me watching this video how detached kids are today from the 80's and 90's (translate: I'm old). It's also enlightening looking back at what really was ridiculously fast for the time. Fit and finish is hands down worlds better today than back then. That near upright spoiler was common at the time. I wanted a cyclone like crazy when I was a teenager. I'd take that trackhawk in a minute today.

GM did a Bravada with this drive train and engine. It was later sold and some years back found again all rusted to crap but still on the road.

My father had a Syclone as well as a f-150 Lightning, the Lightning was a better Truck, but the Syclone was uncanny fast for how it looks. By far my favorite GMC, just seeing them now makes me smile with joy.

As someone who daily drives a 93 s10 blazer 4dr with the 4.3, she absolutely boogies for how old, underpowered, and heavy she is. The s10 blazer as a whole I feel is a very quirky vehicle

I really like those cars too. The typhoon, syclone, grand national, even the first gen Ford lightning was pretty cool. I’m a big fan of the grand national myself. Whenever the automakers decided to add a turbo to their engines, the outcome was pretty good. Kinda like Honda finally turbocharging their cars.
