I noticed one of these older guys in the In-N-Out line had a gorgeous green typhoon that you could tell was his pride and joy - I told him that I loved it and I could tell it made his day. To 99% of people it looks like a completely normal 90s SUV so he probably doesn't get a lot of looks from other folks

The engine has the power, the transmission is a major letdown. The reason so many of these were heavily modified was because of the disappointing transmission. With a new quicker transmission with more gears these are a LOT quicker. That being said what some of the others in this thread have mentioned, it might need a tune up, full fluid exchange including transmission and motor oil, etc.

That's actually just a generic shifter from everything that was RWD and had a floor mounted shift. The same shifter is also in the 3rd and 4th gen camaros, as well as the C5 corvette

Separate ignition and door keys meant you could idle the engine and lock the vehicle. A throw back to needing to warm a carburetor before being able to drive the car.

Fun fact: the instrument cluster was taken from the Pontiac Sunbird GT as at the time it was the only GM vehicle using a turbo. It was cheaper for GM to fit it to the Typhoon/Syclone then to create new clusters.

Doug, the cup “holders” on the glovebox door are actually something GM had offered going back as far as I remember. Our ‘71 Buick had them, although the door on that was all steel, so the indents were very shallow. Obviously they were meant to be used only when parked, such as when you were at the drive-in (before there were drive-thrus).

I commented about the same thing. I looked is up on the internet. I could find glove box doors with cup holder stamped on the inside as far back as the mid 1950's. My dad's '65 Impala had 3 indentations stamped in the door and we used them to hold drinks when we were parked many times.

there are 2 cup holders in front of the shifter...but they aren't much deeper than glove box holes. So basically useless. Anything stored in that under dash "shelf" NEVER stays put when you step on the gas in one of these.

The fog light switch and the mirror adjust switch were available on other variations of the S10 Blazer but they were definitely afterthought additions to the interior. One thing that might not be a quirk but just interesting, if you have the rear glass open, you don't need the key to open the rear tailgate. Also should mention that if you leave the headlights/parking lights on, it beeps at you to let you know. And I think most people just use the left side to both push and pull for on an off. Didn't even mention the CD player! That was a big deal at the time too.

I owned a 93 Typhoon in green. Loved it and wish I kept it. I enjoyed how it got quiet when under hard acceleration. It was very comfortable, had a perfect step-in height, and almost no bolstering in the seats so you hung on to the steering wheel for dear life when cornering. I miss it!

I will never forget the sound of all the plastic creaking inside of my buddies highly modified GMC typhoon as he held the brake pedal and the throttle pedal down simultaneously, the oversized turbo spooled the boost up as it was preparing to launch and and when he took his foot off the break that all wheel drive turbo shot like a rocket. But every time he did this I couldn’t help imagine the wear and tear that drivetrain was being subjected to.

The three keys are not factory. GM only issues this with the door and ignition keys. The fuel door is aftermarket. No GM car had a locking cap from the factory in the 90s.

The window switches were because the driver window was "auto" down/up and the passenger one was strictly up or down as long as you held the button. That was a new feature and the switch was made different to allow for the auto feature.

The cup "holders" on the glove box cover was actually pretty common in vehicles all the way back to the 60s. I think it was done more to let the owner know that it was designed to hold things so you could actually place something there without concern of it breaking or collapsing.

My 1993 Pontiac Bonneville had a foglight switch just like that GMC. It was on the roof, by the map lights. Didn't know the car had foglights for two years of ownership, and didn't know where the switch was for another year after I saw it had them.

My 1992 Bonneville SSEi had the same foglight switch. So does my 1998 Trans Am. They look very parts-bin, but they do at least include a light to make it easy to see if the fogs are on, and they stay in whatever setting you leave them. A lot of the later momentary or digital foglight switches will turn off, especially if you disconnect the battery.

Usually the separate keys were the door / ignition key, the fuel key, and then the trunk or storage key. That's if thye actually had 3 keys, most cars at the time didn't have a locking fuel cap.

I don't know if anyone would consider this an early performance SUV, but a friend of mine's father worked for GM in the 1970's and he special ordered (using non-public option codes) a 1978 K5 Blazer with a rare L82 high performance 1978 Corvette 350 small block (right from GM "stock"). It was ordered with a "sporty looking" 2-tone blue and white paint job, an NP203 full time 4wd system, optional extra-wide off road 10.5" x 31" tires (in the day, 10.5" x 31" tires were considered big), a "heavy duty" TH350 transmission, an oversized radiator from a K30, an oversized transmission cooler, and several other high performance goodies. Back in the day if we lined up besides K5's with 400's or even similar year pickup trucks with 400's or 454's, that Blazer always blew their doors off. It was the fastest stock full size GM truck I knew of until well into the 1990's. Do any of you know of any more L82's that made it into Blazer's or other Chevrolet vehicles, stock? My understanding is that, at the time, if you knew the option codes you could get the L82 in a number of different vehicles. Although the Blazer is long gone, I've still got the removable rear seat and the L82 engine, complete with it's large 2.02"/1.60" valve heads. The L82 is now installed in my custom K20/K30 square body long box pickup truck.

I'm feeling the Typhoon review...what an icon!! Those were so rare back in my day...I had a black Fox Body Mustang Cobra with a manual shift with tons of work done to it and those Typhoons/Cyclones were not easy to beat. If my Mustang was factory stock I would have seen the Typhoons tail lights in a 1/4 mile run!!

My dad had an 88 2-door S10 Blazer when I was a kid, with most of the same interior as this truck. I definitely remember clearly every single thing Doug mentioned, except it had different gauges. Spent many, many hours in that back seat on family road trips, with those arm rests and “saddle bag” pouches. And of course being the 1980’s, my brother and I would fold the rear seat down while we were driving along so we could play in the back. We were super safe back then. 😂😂

Shame he didn't actually show the performance of it. The Typhoon (and even more so for the Syclone) were a one trick pony. They were AMAZING from launch. Thats why the Syclone beat the 348 in the 1/4 mile. That was what it does. The Ferrari would have crushed it on a track. Put it in park, power brake it, drop it back into drive, load the boost, and then let her rip. These things were sick!

Negative, I have a 1992 Ty with all original switches. The same 3 are faded. Same goes for just about every typhoon I’ve ever seen

It wasn't uncommon for things to fade in an odd way for cars of the time. Especially in GM and Chrysler products. Like he said in the video they were probably not part of the usual parts bin, so sourced from outside the usual chain. I've seen some cars from the time with blue interiors that still look like their original color, except the front seats that are almost white. When they first started installing passenger side airbags it was common to have the cover fade or crack at a very different rate than the rest of the dash. It's all part of the joy of (questionable) quality control in domestic cars from the 80's and 90's.

Used to have a 2-door 1987 Jimmy with the 125hp 2.8L V6 and a 5 speed manual. A lot of similarities here, a lot of the same switches. The seats were super comfy. After 25+ years of ownership, I could tell you all sorts of bizarre GM gremlins that never worked reliably, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the GMC Jimmy of that generation. At a certain point it was just too old to keep around any longer.

Oh man, such good memories. My dad bought a 1992 Typhoon- white w/ gray trim right when they came out. One of my best memories of my life was 16-year-old me getting to drive that beast all the way from Colorado Springs to Vail via Highway 24 and 9 over Hoosier Pass (Continental Divide) and then all the way into Vail Village with my dad in the passenger seat. I might as well have been flying a jet plane the way it felt in my head the whole way along. Thanks for the review!

And I'm going to post what might be an unpopular comment--the '92 Typhoon was superior to the '93. I'm speaking from personal experience because my dad ended up buying a '93 as well. Why the '92 was better: 1) It had the custom black leather seats with the Typhoon logo on them. The '93 just had generic black leather seats that were identical to the redesigned GMC Jimmy and Chevy S-10 Blazer that year. I think this was the most standout difference. 2) The Typhoon logo on the lower body panels was done in a black/grey that looked much sleeker than the red variant on the '93. 3) They added a bit of red coloring to the cutouts on the rims that looked just a little flashy in my opinion. 4) They added red coloring to the GMC logo on the steering wheel that didn't look as clean. 5) They added additional colors to the lineup which sort of diluted it, but that's sort of a nit pick. 6) Either the turbo or the transmission was tweaked so the car was smoother, but it didn't give the same exciting wind-up "shudder" that the '92 did just before it would explode and take off like a rocket ship. That probably appealed much more to my teen sensibilities back then. :) 7) The '92 has custom plastic moulding around the door handles to make them look more sleek and integrated. The '93 just had plain-old GMC Jimmy/S10 door handles without the custom trim. 8) The '92 had custom floor mats with a Typhoon logo. The '93 just had standard black ones. Both were unbelievably fun no matter how you cut it!

In the first video, he makes a pretty big deal out of the "lack" of badging and compares it to the Ford RS which has "RS" everywhere! Bottom line is, GM didn't want to put extra money into custom badging (hence the intake is held over from the Syclone without new castings made for Typhoon)

Had a friend with a standard s10 four cylinder in turquoise. Such an odd color choice. Upon research the first owner went out of his way to get that color. Was the only option on the truck. Definitely eye catching.

About a year ago I saw some dealership in Pennsylvania had a sleeper Typhoon that was completely rebodied as a standard S-10 Blazer. There was no indication from the exterior that it was actually a Typhoon. It had no cladding, nor was it lower. It even had regular Blazer alloys. That's the Typhoon I want.

A buddy bought a Syclone right when they came out and I have to say that had the strongest take off of any vehicle Ive ever been in. From 20-30mph flooring it, it would pound your head into the headrest at the down shift EVERY TIME. It made no matter that you knew it was coming.

Interesting fact: Typhoon has 2 "O's" in the word and the word "Door" has 2 O's. That's why the Typhoon only came in a 2 door variant. Gen Motors wanted to keep it consistant.

I had a '92 S-10 that had like 46k mile when I bought it second hand. Previous owner took EXCELLENT care of it, an it looked like it JUST came off the factory floor. 4.3L, black with grey bench interior. That thing was not fast, but QUICK! Smooth power, never felt a shift, could have performed surgery in the engine bay. Chrome wheel arch trim an taillights, black steel wheels with the chrome beauty ring an black center cap. Automatic, unfortunately, but I'm not entirely sure that the trim level of mine was ever offered in manual, but I still would have given up the stick for the bench seat which I love. A shame we don't have benches anymore. With reguards to the headlight switch, Dough has it wrong. Every S-10/S-15 owner knows you just push on the main headlight switch, an either push the right "off" button or pull both switches forward. Heh.

My best friend had the Syclone. Equipped with a 150hp N.O.S. shot. He bought it used in Sweetwater Tennessee for $8,500 in 1999. It had 6,200 miles on it and was absolutely mint. The guy that owned it only raced it at the local drag strip. The only thing he did that was sorta cringy was,...he cut out a hole in the center of the bed to mount the N.O.S. system. I have no idea why he didn't just mount it to the bed. Anyway,......that truck was absolutely insane. You could hit the N.O.S. in the hit and alleviate the lag. It would smoke pretty much everything that pulled beside it. I saw a small handful barely eek out a win. Very small. It ate Cobras alive.Vettes. Camaro's. It was a handful. And if you were rolling around 40mph and matted it??? It was truly scary. He sold that truck 2 years ago with 15,000 miles and mint paint for $45,000. He did alright I think. Lol
