I had a guy try and sell one of those to the Guitar Center I worked at once. He had replaced the tuners with grovers, had it re-fretted, and gotten the wiring re-done when the pots went out a few years prior so Guitar Center offered him under 1k for it. The guitar wasn't worth a goldmine, but the thing *screamed* and felt alive. He only wanted $1400 so he could put it towards a 60s ES-335 I believe, and I literally spent the following week with his phone number in my pocket trying to figure out how to put together $1400. He came in a week later and told me he changed his mind and couldn't part with it. I understood, and was partly relieved because about to happily go broke for that guitar.

Unfortunately, this prompted me to count: an even three dozen, not counting basses, lap steels, acoustics or other stringed instruments like mandolins, ukuleles, and fiddles. They range in price from less than $100 to around $3,000 and there's not a strong correlation between price and how much I play them. There really isn't all that much difference between a $400 Squier Classic Vibe Strat and a $2,000 Eric Johnson Strat. Current production techniques, like CNC machining and vacuum kilns have made modern guitars the best that have ever been made. I've worked on and played pre-CBS Fenders and pre-war Martins and, aside from the cool factor (which is considerable) I think the new ones are just as good or better than the old ones. And, yes, I am slightly embarrassed by the number of guitars that I own.

That Pedal Show I think that it is definitely that but also that you gravitate towards certain things like certain ways that a volume pot works with the pickups, types of pickups etc. and that you end up being able to find something close to your sound on most guitars or else you end up feeling like you don’t bind with it or it feels hard to play.

Definitely don't want this to come off as a backhanded compliment, but sounds like you guys have been practicing more than usual during this quarantine period. I feel like you both outplayed yourselves today. It can be very inspiring to pick up a different guitar, so maybe that was it.

Dan has definitely been putting the work in. To GREAT effect. I don’t touch the guitar between video filming unfortunately, but I think what you’re hearing is what you say - how guitars inspire you. That’s what it’s ALL about!

That was a lot of fun. Honestly, I wasn't sure if I was going to be into a fly-by guitar tour (as much as I love you guys!), but what I really ended up enjoying was listening to all the different tones and styles they all inspired the same hands to play. Very different than listening to KZbin reviews of different guitars by a bunch of different people. Thanks much as always.

I’m not going to comment on the regular guitars (apart from a shout out to my mate Karl Longbottom - great maker, even if he is from the wrong side of the north 😂). It’s the Ibanez I wanted to comment on. I have an S470. The inbetween abounds on it are just epic. I’ve been telling people about them for years. I’m not an Ibanez fan really but that guitar just has this “thing” that I adore.

I really enjoyed today's show, thank you guys for everything you do. This is all a bit new to me I have several comments and will just post them separately in case you or anyone more knowledgable want to chime in. First comment included: 1 Even though mostly we got single-coils, humbuckers and P90s, the odd Gold-Foil and Filtertron (isn't the gold-foil pickup a special kind of Filtertron anyway?) and 1 Blade pickup from the EOB Stratocaster... anyway I would have loved to hear Lipstick and true rails ... the point is maybe show on pickup families would be great if you could cover all or most of them.
@ThatPedalShow4 жыл бұрын
Hello Mesmer, welcome and thanks for all the comments. Unlikely we’ll do rails, but some lipsticks really should join the fam. Cheers!
@mesmersocial55834 жыл бұрын
@@ThatPedalShow you don't have to answer here (or anywhere obvs) but more fun if you do in some form of your choice: why not rails? anyway I still haven't seen an authoritative post anywhere with an earnest try at describing the different characteristics or perhaps better phrased "sought after sounds" associated with the different pickup designs - beyond the typical Single Coil vs. Humbucker that is. The killer feature would be for it to be comprehensive.

There a song from the 80's called, '88 Lines about 44 Women" . I would love to write 66 lines about 33 guitars but I won't. Some quick notes First of all. Always a treat to tear the venerable Red. Blue as well. Second. I've spent 99.9% of my life never even thinking about G&L guitars until I hear one being played. Fender-ish in it's own way. Third. Blues on a de-tuned Supro is just downright greazy. Whoa.
