I agree the ‘53 version is so, so sweet! I’ve always loved this song ~ the version a few years later is absolutely incredible! He has such control of his voice and the way he can go from (I’m not sure how you describe it) high and low and how effortless it was for him just blows me away! As you said: “He was a natural “, a true gift from god!!!! Amazing reaction Dani.. 💞

It’s really interesting, those early Sun demos and recordings, Elvis was keen on doing ballads. Sam was bored out of his gourd. Then of course Elvis started fooling around with That’s All Right, and the rest as they say is history.

Growing up in Tupelo Elvis was influenced by the Blues sound which you can hear in the 1953 recording especially in his speaking voice sounding raspy. Sounding very much like the old blues singers that he gravitated to as a youth. As he matured in the 1957 version you hear more R&B and his own style taking over Elvis becoming Elvis. Great reaction thank you for bring both versions to us I haven't heard them in years.

He always wanted to be a Bass singer. This is when he heard the Ink Spots' version featuring the Bass singer doing the narration. Sam loved that echo effect which was not used by the Ink Spots. Basically; he was giving reverence to the Ink Spots' Bass singer. The re-recording was just him narrating and not trying to sound like the Ink Spots' Bass singer. Love both versions!

If you get a chance, listen to the version he recorded four years later at a studio in California. There are backup vocals (probably the Jordanaires), it is gorgeous ear candy and I guarantee it will freakin' melt your heart. If you, of all people, haven't heard it, you need to treat yourself to a good listen. I can also guarantee you will not be able to resist listening to it at least twice in the same sitting, maybe even three or four times.

For those who don’t know, Elvis is singing AND playing guitar at the same time on the early version. In fact, he paid 4$ himself for the recording session. He was 18 years old.

And I would be definitely buying a copy as well. Great reaction video of Elvis singing that,s when the heartache begins from 1953&1957 . Great voice at 17 / at age 22.

I just found your channel a few days ago and I love your reactions. I've watched hundreds maybe thousands of first reaction videos, but you seem to take it to another level. With that being said I wasn't surprised to learn that you are a recording artist. I found Fil from Wings of Pegasus first reactions to be the most genuine and you're right up there with him. One thing I would like to see is more diversity in the songs that are chosen. It seems that once someone posts a song, everybody else does the same songs. There is a mountain of music out there and I've been buying records since 1962. I'm from Philly which has great roots in music and hundreds of regional hits that could use a first reaction. Here's one by The Four Tops. It was the B-Side to "Sad Hearts" which didn't break, but this side started to get spins and became a local favorite. This is the original of a song you probably know by Whitney. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYC6gWV-nbKroac&ab_channel=gaynormartin

Dani, something else - not talked - about occurred on Jul 5, 1954 when Elvis recorded, "That's All Right" (his first record). The reason, that night in Sun Studios, that Sam Phillips was pulling his hair out, trying to get "this boy" to finally get his teeth into a song was this >> up until that very moment, Elvis sang songs he thought would please his elders (obviously, incl. his mother). It was only after hours of fruitless effort trying to find a "recordable" song, that Elvis, during a coffee break, began to clown around and actually sang a song that he, himself, liked (despite what other might think)! That's when "the real Elvis" broke through. "That's When Your Heartaches Begin" was a song that, to Elvis, appealed to both "his elders" and himself.

Hard to add to what others have said below other than to point out that Elvis was already a superstar by 1957. We all know Elvis is still the King! I do prefer the later version. Listen to it and its soul crushing story. Well written by Fred Fisher, William Raskin and Billy Hill in 1937. You should always give kudos to the writers. The team of Leiber and Stoller wrote several Elvis songs.

Thanks for pointing out how by the later version for sure his residence just ships all over the place and he's just in so much control of it and yet it still seems so natural. And it's not just going up and using chest voice and occasionally maybe blending a little falsetto in there but also how it goes back down so quickly because sometimes once you go up higher it's harder to relax back down real quickly. He just had pure natural talent but I think he also had a great ear and so I think by being able to listen so closely, he can figure out ways to control his voice better and still be natural about it. I have never heard either of these Cuts before but the comparison was quite fascinating.

On this initial July 1953 recording he actually SOUNDS drunk high or buzzed at certain points in the song; (not saying that he was); i think he was playing the guitar while recording this; this was the 2nd song he did on that july 1953 day, the first being MY HAPPINESS; to me, his later renditions of Thats when your Heartaches Begin sound more Polished; he recorded it later on ('57?) Plus, he sang it on dec 4, 1956 at the Famous Million Dollar Quartet session with carl perkins, Jerry lee lewis and johnny cash also at Sun Studios, Memphis Tennessee.

On the first one if I didn't know it was Elvis, I would think that ot was an African-American singer. I would never guess it was him. Maybe in first part of first version he sounded like himself, but in the other half nothing like him. So i chose second version, it sounds more like Elvis that I know :) It's a shame that there is no whole song "Living to love you" on youtube. It sounds absolutely beautiful.
