The lead on those songs was Greg Rollie. He was a lead singer for Santana on Black magic woman. He and Niel Schon formed Journey and Steve joined later. He left Journey later and Jonathan Cain became the keyboard player.

4 octaves + 5. A decent range for sure. What sets Steve apart is his ability to stay up in the high tenor range (he is the only counter tenor I've ever heard who doesn't sound like a girl) and, of course, his flawless vocal technique. Plus he was blessed with a voice that SOUNDS beautiful.

Journey was known for their "segue songs", songs that went right from one song right into the next without a break. "Morning Girl/Stay Awhile" from the album "Departure" is also very pretty. I especially love the differences in the two voices---Gregg Rollie and Steve Perry. They harmonize beautifully too. I could probably listen to this and to "Lights" and be perfectly happy.

The first album with Steve Perry. We noticed, trust me. I was 13, loved loved me some Journey. Saw them in 1979, I was 14, Steve Perry was shocking. He out did his album performances. They were touring for their second album with Steve. Amazing singer. I'll never forget how we went from awe to shock to screaming our lungs. Let's not start on Neal on the guitar, et.

I’m thinking that this is the first live performance of Journey after Steve joined the band. The record label was going to drop the band because they weren’t being played on the radio & their manager forced them to listen to the demo tape of Steve. His addition to the band is, as they say, the start of something beautiful! ✌️☮️

At this point, Steve was brand-spanking-new to Journey, and they were riding that meteoric rise to success. Greg left for other ventures and was replaced by Jonathan Cain, on keyboard.

The introduction guy was "Wolfman Jack". If you don't know, you better know. lol. He was hugely popular back when I was growing up. He died in '95. He was like the Dick Clark of his time. From Wikipedia: Robert Weston Smith, known as Wolfman Jack, was an American disc jockey. Famous for his gravelly voice, he credited it for his success, saying, "It's kept meat and potatoes on the table for years for Wolfman and Wolfwoman. A couple of shots of whiskey helps it. I've got that nice raspy sound."

I can't recommend "Hallelujah" by Pentatonix highly enough. Five singers (one usually beatboxes the percussion but has a beautiful tenor when he sings) that range from an A6 in a counter-tenor to a bass with a Bb1 at the end. The Lead is a baritone that takes over for the bass when he sings lead and the lone woman in the group is an amazing mezzo-soprano.
