Fun Fact: 'Ustad' is not a name its a title given to legends. It literally means 'Master', this is given by the musical community to those whose talent and excellence achieves the highest order. So when you see a video where an artist referred to as an 'Ustad' you know you are in for a journey with excellence!

His breath support, vocal timbre, and range are insane. I’ve been a fan of his for a while, I’m glad you’re seeing him. There’s something else I’m going to request of you, by him but also another group that sang with a little girl who is insane!

He’s from Pakistan. Latin Americans have awesome melisma as well called COPLA or flamenco music. And Irish people also have their own kind of melisma. Melisma really is an international thing.

Wowwww. What a voice, I have heard of him. He is singing in an Eastern style (Like you said Nick, Melismas). Mostly Black-American Churches are the ones who developed melismas in the U.S. over the centuries, through gospel music. Basically them and the eastern style (Balkans / Middle East / Spain / India) have amazing melismas, even though they are different but both are wow. So glad you reacted to him. Su ch a voice. Wowwwwww. I love his runs, his vocal texture and tone, very emotive and bright. And creative melismas!

@@hollygranger3734 You're welcome. I find it interesting, that if you look at any music (Before Soul/RnB/Aretha/Etta James), eg: 1920s-1930s, runs, dips, riffs and melismas are either never used or very limited and simple. The gospel churches influence was strong in singers like Etta James and Aretha Franklin. Eg: if we look at Jazz, runs were not used, it was more linear and smooth. Controlled. Blues too. Country music too. I guess opera in Europe used some types of runs but is different to normal singing and requires lots of training. In pop music, other genres we know in the English spesking world/the west, gospel is source of these vocal acrobatics that slowly crept in and influenced everything. In the east, the rythms are based on the Makams (Rythms/Scale) of the Jewish / Christian Orthodox/ Muslim religious music, which are almost the same scales, as well as Hindu religious music in the Indian subcontinent, Gypsy (Romany) music and Arab nomadic singing. These regions have all influenced each other so much, because of empires and invasions, immigration and thus a 3000 year rich cultural exchange. This is why you can see so many types of vocal gymnastics that are similar from India to Spain, along with a yearning/passion/cry in their voices. 🙂

Those rifts and runs or scating (some of you call it) is actualy equivalent of solfège but in this classical form, except of do re mi so fa la ti sylables are different and here they are sa re ga ma pa dha ni. Because of first four (sa, re, ga, ma), it is called sargam. Master singers do Sargam to express the series of their notes by becoming an instrument themselves.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a Pakistani qawwal and singer. He was trained from childhood by his own legendary father as well as his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who revolutionized the art of qawwali. Qawwali is a uniquely South Asian Sufi tradition. You can listen to Rahat's qawwalis, songs and kalaam's on Coke Studio Pakistan.

Masha'Allah our brother is saying that he i stunned to the degree of being irked by how good it was (and that he never knew about this style of music) and has not yet listened to Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, Rahat's teacher. But its ok, this style is literally native to my land, and your reaction is the same as ours was when we first heard Qawwali too. :D

The ustand is an incredibly talented singer, even though his late uncle trained him. He guides his backup singers and band using his voice and gestures, often changing the speed and structure of the songs. The people from India and Pakistan are famous for developing great talents through hard work and commitment, making them examples of excellence that are hard to match.
