Who the hell is Maxwell? Just heard his version of “woman’s work” the emotion and power of Kate bushes work is just there, no forced pushing what you think is what it is, you can only copy or emulate her work not transcend it. Kate Bush is English, she started to write songs and sing her music after her 16th birthday, Dave Gilmore from Pink Floyd found her and her massive talent and the group took her around with them and pushed her forward. She not only writes music and sings it, she dances to it using her own choreography, with stand alone music and songs non of this manufactured girl band stuff. I think I’m right in saying because of this she designed the first close to face microphone so can dance without holding a Mike in the hand. Her song book is quite big but she’s proved to be quite private almost reclusive, her videos are quite spectacular with her interpretation of the story behind the music. In her own way she carried on the British knack of producing original, iconic music! Everything music seems to revolve around 67 to 89 ish, there doesn’t seem to be the spark that there used to be anywhere. Look around the song books of psychedelic, hard rock whatever genre whatever country, the originality seemed to slow down and petter out after 89. Cheers Aah Kid

@@TheWrensHouse He never pretended it was his song when he first covered it on MTV Unplugged Live he introduced the song as being hers. When he has performed it on tour he has played her version and video and spoke of her before he goes into his cover. People just don't listen or pay attention, but it is no fault of his. His intentions was just picking it as a song to perform on the MTV show, because they asked him to do some cover songs along with his own songs and because he liked the song and her music. The other cover in the show was of a Nine Inch Nails song. His record company pushed this song to be put out as a single and a video after his cover became popular.

It is a shame that Kate is not well known in America. But in the U.K, throughout Europe, Australia, and Japan, Kate is an icon. She is a true original, there's just no one like her - a musical genius. By the time Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour discovered her at the age of 15, she had already written over 250 songs. A brilliant and innovative composer, lyricist, singer (with a 4-octave voice), pianist, dancer, mime, choreographer, record producer, video producer & director - she even helped develop the first cordless headset microphone that she used on tour in 1979. Hugely influential and HIGHLY respected by musicians worldwide, Kate was one of the first female musicians to take total production and artistic control over her work. She’s been a real pioneer for women in the music industry for the last 40 years. First woman to have a #1 self-written song in the UK charts. First woman to have an album debut at #1. First woman to have a Top 10 album in each of the last four decades. She has had 25 Top 40 singles, 10 albums on the Top 10 Albums Charts, nominated 13 times for British Phonographic Industry awards and 3 Grammy awards, an Ivor Novella Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 for her honored services to music. In September of 2020 Kate was honored as a fellow of the prestigious Ivors Academy for songwriters and composers. In 2014 she returned to the stage and sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes (a record for the Hammersmith Apollo). Her 22 performances were highly acclaimed (named as "the #1 live music event of the year" by many music publications) and she became the first woman to have 8 albums in the top 40 charts at the same time (third behind only Elvis and The Beatles).

There seems a fairly consistent line drawn about the “better” version. Anyone who heard Kate first picks her version. Anyone who hears Maxwell first picks his. Obviously without Kate, there would be no Maxwell, as far as this song is concerned. For me she conveys all the emotion needed because she wrote it so she knows precisely what it was about. Maxwell does an amazing job, but I’ll always prefer Kate’s version. Plus, it shows how versatile she has been as an artist over the years. I gather I'm in a minority here, but I have some reservations about Maxwell's version. First up, I love that he covered it, and that he spoke so effusively about her when introducing the song live. He does sing it very well; that said, I couldn't help feeling that he's sort of showing off his falsetto - particularly on the "I know you have a little life in you yet" part, which Kate actually sings an octave down. Maxwell stays in his falsetto throughout, which IMO flattens the song out a bit, and detracts from the impact of those lines.
