Its mostly Slavic lore not Scandinavian. The 2 spirits at the start of the video are specifically from Slavic lore.

Upyr is an interesting one. It is the origin of the word "vampire". In general Slavic Upyr means '"the one who latches".

I enjoyed the demo for this game a lot. This weirdly reminds me of Vampyr, which was something also very captivating yet flawed. Edit: bought the game, it really is like Vampyr but with a top down/ turn based combat system, if you aren’t averse to the above and actually enjoyed Vampyr, you are very likely going to love this game.

Good call. Still would like to play that one too. Their newer game Banishers or whatever also looks semi similar. But I think I’ll dig thaumaturge’s combat more than the action jank don’t nod used in banjshers and vampyr

Played the demo for this game during last year's Next Fest and I was really intrigued. The shortcomings mentioned aren't enough to sway me from it either. These flaws sound like typical indie type stuff - lack of budget or lack of experience, etc. Not sure when I'll get this as my plate is VERY full, but I will at some point for sure.

There is a game called Penny Blood being made that is a spiritual successor to the Shadow Heats games. Shadow Hearts creator Matsuzo Machida, composer Yoshitaka Hirota and others from Shadow Hearts are all part of the team making Penny Blood.

I am a huge fan of vampyr. So I picked up banishers last week. Sadly, it's just worse than vampyr in every way. I still think it's a good game but it's hard not to compare it to their previous game.

So the game has cinematic cutscenes and dialogues look like a third person action RPG game (Mass Effect), camera angle from CRPGs (Disco Elysium) and the battle system is from Turn Based Jrpgs (Persona). Looks like a weird fever dream lol. Not sure about the overall quality of the package, but holy sh*t this does look very ambitious for a small budget game.

Quality isn't the best. The budget for fancy cinematic cutscenes and voice actors should have gone into other aspects of the game, because it looks like it was a waste. Everybody wants to be the old Bioware games when it comes to presentation but i've concluded long ago that for these smaller developers its much better to just forget that concept and dump all that money into good game designers and writers.

@@ZenzDeluxe Eh nowadays you can't just pay for good writers. Designers sure, but even bigger pricier writers make up incoherent drivel 90% of the time. I mean the actual AAA space is full of badly written stories now (always was honestly). While many Indie games and smaller budget movies have excellent scripts. And not like the game's graphics aren't a selling point. It's better than a yet another low effort pixel art game. Also it does have an art direction and style, so it doesn't look like a generic UE4 store bought game. But yeah I get what you're saying. They could've at least hired a better translation team, as it apparently is a problem.

I agree with the positive and negative points, but I would add that the sound of snapping Wictor's fingers and the resulting red effects are very satisfying. I find myself snapping Wictor's fingers even when I don't really need to.

Its just a point and click adventure, the basic RPG elements and on-rails "perception" detective work seem to conceal what a simple game it is. Nothing really against it but it barely feels like a game, more just an interactive film or novel. Just really wish 90% of games weren't intentionally made to be as least engaging as possible.

There is a huge mistake in the intro - there are no Scandinavian monsters in the game. These are Slavic, mainly based on Polish (Poland, Europe) folklore.

This game minimum system requirement is GTX 1070, so yeah, good luck pulling in a playerbase. Even Baldur's Gate 3, as gorgeous as it looks, isnt as ridiculously high as most of these unknown games' sys req are.

Yeah, seems like the type of combat that requires some suspension of disbelief 😂 reminds me of 1990s Japanese fighting games and RPGs where people get stabbed or hit by meteors and just keep trucking with no visible damage except to their health meter
