The MOST Common Cause of Dizziness - Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) - Diagnosis & Treatment. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Phoenix Arizona, discusses the #1 cause of dizziness - BPPV.
Website: www.DrCliffAuD.com
Clinic Website: www.AppliedHearingAZ.com
You know that feeling you get when you get off of a merry-go-round and you feel like you are still spinning? Well that is what it is like to have Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. BPPV causes dizziness following head movements or body position movements. Basically, if you have ever become dizzy by just rolling out of bed, you may have had BPPV at some point.
BPPV is the most common cause of dizziness. Let's explore the description of BPPV. Benign means that it won't kill you. Paroxysmal means that the episodes are of brief duration. Positional means that it is triggered by movement, and Vertigo is the sensation of movement, such as spinning, when there is no head movement.
BPPV occurs when crystals called otoconia, normally embedded in the utricle become dislodged and migrate out to one of the three fluid filled semicircular canals. These crystals DO NOT belong in the semicircular canals. As head positions change, cause additional stimulation of the sensory hair cells in the semicircular canals which sends false information to the brain which leads to the sensation of dizziness. BPPV is the most common cause of vertigo with 50% of individuals over the age of 70 experiencing this type of dizziness.
Symptoms of BPPV may come and go, and you may feel symptom free for a period of time, as long as you refrain from significant head movement. It is important to know that hearing loss is not a symptom of BPPV. If you have hearing loss along with dizziness, this could indicate a serious medical condition and you should see your physician immediately.
Diagnosis of BPPV requires structured positional movements along with the evaluation of nystagmus which are involuntary eye movements. If a nystagmus is seen and the appropriate semicircular canal is identified, then treatment can be administered. According to Dr. Richard Gans of the American Institute of Balance (www.Dizzy.com) treatments called Canalith Repositioning can be used to guide the dislodged crystals back into the Utricle. These repositioning techniques are extremely effective, but should only be done under the supervision and assistance of an individual specifically trained in the diagnosis and treatment of dizzy conditions.
Attempting to diagnose and treat BPPV yourself can be dangerous considering that if you perform treatment incorrectly, you could make your condition worse. The good news is, diagnosis and treatment of BPPV is relatively straight forward when treated by a specially trained Physician or Audiologist. Just make sure to follow your Doctors post treatment instructions.
So the next time you experience intense, brief spells of dizziness, when you change head or body position, make sure you contact your Audiologist or Physician to get your condition diagnosed as soon as possible.

Pro tip: When you wake up from your bed, don't do it fast. Follow 30/30/30 principle. 30 seconds lay flat in bed, next 30 seconds wake-up and sit on the bed doinh nothing and next 30 seconds stand up and see if you are fine and then continue. And also always keep your body hydrated 😁

Thanks for this, it has really helped me understand it. I think this may be what I am currently experiencing in the morning. Why does it only happen when my head has been in the same position for ages and then I move it. With BPPV, does this happen when you move your head even after a very short time of keeping your head still? Or does it make no difference?

I’ve had vertigo, dizziness, and stumbling for 1 week now, but the first night it happened was the worse. As days rolled by, these symptoms seem to weaken. I powerlift, so I realized that when I lay down for the benchpress, I experience the dizziness/vertigo the most when my feet are flat on the ground while laying. Tested on my bad at home and made myself dizzy. It takes about 6-12 seconds for me to rid the spinning sensation. But the first day, it was too much to bare I had to stand up. Also the first day, I would stumble when getting up because I was scared from being dizzy , but so dizzy I had to gain control of myself again. Will contact my doctor soon.

Why do i feel dizzy in the darkness. It starts off with me somewhat losing balance then it leads to me being dizzy (this only happens to me when its pitch black) which is why i don’t like being in the dark and usually leave my phone on all night or my tv on all night so if i do need yo get up i have some type of light OR i’ll sleep in the dark but i keep my phone next to me AT ALL times. I went to a haunted house for halloween with my friends this year and i literally had to hold onto my friend’s shirt from while walking behind him in a very dark room bc i started feeling dizzy and losing balance.

Try the "Epley Maneuver" it fixed mine for about 2 years but had to do it again. Also never lay on the ear that is making you dizzy.

Hopefully someone can tell me what’s wrong with me. So to start off with I have SEVERE Emetophobia, now on to the story. A few months ago, I was feeling completely normal and acting like my usual self. I was feeling tired so I went to bed early while my family was doing whatever. I went to sleep at 10-11. When I woke up it was 2 Am and of course my family was still doing stuff. The thing that woke me up was this worse feeling EVER. I felt like my body was sinking but very lightweight, it kept coming and going, coming and going, everytime it came I started shaking. I tried to sleep it off but then I started feeling nauseous. And that’s when that phobia fear struck me which made it worse. The feeling kept coming then it goes. My body felt so light and like I was being pushed down I started crying. Everytime it came I shivered so hard. Eventually I threw up. It made the nausea go away but that sinking/light feeling would still come in waves over and over again until I fell asleep. When I woke up the feeling was gone but the scared shaky feeling was still there. The next day I was nauseated ALL DAY. I didn’t throw up thank goodness but the nausea was so bad I lied down all day. I forced myself to eat cause I ate nothing all day and cried lol. Later at night when I took a nap and woke up the nausea was gone. I was so happy thinking all of this was over. At first I thought my period caused all of this but I’m not sure. Over the next few weeks sometimes I jerk at night and began to feel that sinking/light feeling, I forced myself to sleep it off and it eventually worked. When I woke up I had that scared nauseous feeling, it was like I was ANTICIPATING for that feeling to come back but it didn’t. Only came at night. Soon enough the feeling stopped coming little by little. It has been a few months now and I STILL anticipate that feeling to come which causes me to think I’m nauseous which then actually makes me nauseous. I feel like this whole experience caused my emetophobia to become even WORSE. I worry everyday if that feeling will come back. I worry EVERYDAY if I will get nauseous and throw up. Please, help. Right now the nausea scared feeling is back currently. Anything that has to do with me being dizzy, SCARES ME. For example when I’m driving and the car rocks. Ever since I experienced this I started worrying about things I NEVER worried about before. PLEASE HELP ME.

Thanks! Will any Dr know how to checkand dagnose it, please? I am too burnt out to go to more doctors, by 40+ years of seeking adequate health care and treatment. AHving Aspergers and CPTSD (complex trauma) and Highsensititvity as well, I have been focusing on gettin gthe personala ssistence I need for things like managing health care visits. Also for my "extra aggressive" Anchylosing spondylitis. I thought my veertigo and dizziness etc issues might come from that, might it? Protruded head, kyphoses. Boneloss in my neck was found in 2008. Please answer if possible, Thank you so much if you do. Be well yourself

I believe I have this disorder. discovered I get dizzy while doing exercises on the floor that require laying down. I have been working out 3-4 days a week at the gym for 9 months and still have balance issues when performing certain core body exercises...it's frustrating bc I have to ask my trainer if I can perform an alternate exercise that accomplishes the same thing. It hampers my ability to gain strength and balance...it sucks

Every time this happens to me it always seems to be related to getting some water in my ear . Once it happened the day after i dove in a pool and once when I jumped off a cliff into a quarry. The last 2 times it seems to be related to getting water in my ear from showering. Is water a possible cause? Im going to start using ear plugs in the shower.
