Great Tip man. I live in the GTA and the fuel prices drove me to get my 2025 NX350h. I got the executive, so there is a bit more weight to the car. But its astonishing how the mileage is not greatly effected. Iv been using the pulse and Glide method and its a great way to manipulate the Hybrid system. Its a ew car 5 days old and it started at 8.5 but now dropped to 6.8. Im sure it will drop more. You explained this is such a simple way, without complicating it. Great video.

I’ve experimented with the 'pulse and glide' technique and found it doesn’t actually save fuel. When you accelerate quickly (as suggested around 1:44), you’re forcing the engine to burn more fuel, which seems to negate any benefit gained during the 'glide' phase when coasting. While some might perceive this method as fuel-saving, it feels more like a placebo effect to me. Personally, I didn’t see any real improvement in fuel efficiency. 🙂

I bought the Ford Escape plug in. Same as the Rav 4 in essence as Toyota and Ford work together on hybrid technology. I did a long trip in Eco Mode and switched in between modes to see the difference. Prince George to Terrace on the way there The car said 60kms left in miles left. On the way back the car said I had 178kms left in full eco mode using the save for later. Auto EV works. But what gave me the difference in fuel economy was coasting down the hills in neutral. Driving a lower speeds managed in some cases 3.7 liters per 100kms. I would not go crazy on plugging it in. On the trip I had a rest stop with a plug in and charged it full on the way there on the way back only had 10kms of charge. Sport mode recharged the battery the best on a downhill. Coasting in neutral doesn't use gas the engine is off in neutral. The quicker slow down leaving it in Gear wasn't worth it unless the speed can be maintained.

I have not heard that term "pulse and glide" since I owned my 2006 Prius. Back then that was a hack to get more mileage out of that car. I was able to get just over 3L /100km in the city back then. Another hack was driving behind really close to a tractor trailer in the highway to get that air effect and reduce drag. I do not suggest anyone do that because it is dangerous but it does work. Me and the wife went fully electric about 6 years now and we are never going back to gas mobiles. I wish Toyota will make a fully electric 4Runner one day, that would be amazing.

Ot using the right choice of English. Here in America we hybrid drivers call how to coasting. Coasting is exactly once you get to particular road max speed allowed you start coasting, i.e., very light or not at all keeping your right foot on the accelerator. This skills of how to coast, or alternative,y using the cruise control at less than the max speed allowed approximately will give you very similar outcome, depends on the distance travel on not busy highways. Using already two different brands full pre-owned hybrids with low mileage including Rx 450h AWD lately, I was more successful w/ fuel economy when using the cruise control at optimal speed (different for different hybrid vehicles) than using the “coasting” technique.

In my new Toyota Yaris hybrid, is it OK to almost always use the ECO mode? I drive mainly in urban environment with once per day has heavy traffic (in the mornings), cars move a little, stop, go, and move a little, stop and go, etc. and in the evening has light / mild traffic. Or is it better to use the NORMAL mode, "always", as the default? My main goal, is to achieve the best fuel economy, to pay less for gas and get more mileage.

Save a lot not having to buy a set of winter & pay twice a year for tire swapping). I have been careful with hypermiling however, never fully understood the full pulse & glide technic until seeing this video demonstration. I will adjust a bit of my current practice and see if this method will also improve my MPG on a FWD DCT HEV. Thank you & I will watch the additional videos you had made related to this topic. 👍

If it is so helpful, one has to wonder why Toyota Engineers didn't incorporate Pulse & Glide into their control systems. Like Honda does. (Well, I know why they can't, but I'll get there.) Here's why P&G works, based on the engine in a third generation (I think) Prius. I choose it because I have the BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) map for it. BSFC is how many grams of fuel it takes to make one kWh of useful energy, as a function of RPM and the power generated.The demonstration is just an approximation. And it would be more dramatic for, say, a Camry because it has a larger engine; I just don't have that data. The Prius engine will never make less than 13 HP while driving. Toyota actually publishes an operational line that cuts off there. This is what determines when the engine comes on when accelerating from a stop, not speed. But since the HP needed is proportional to speed, harder acceleration makes it turn on at lower a speed. With the optimum RPM (it is different for each power level): HP=13, BSFC~=222 g/kWh HP=15, BSFC~=219 g/kWh HP=20, BSFC~=218 g/kWh HP=25, BSFC~=216 g/kWh HP=28.5, BSFC~=214 g/kWh

@SeanBaker
@SeanBaker 7 ай бұрын
The car knows when to use the engine and when not to use the engine. It's very frustrating, as I often think that the engine shouldn't be on in certain situations. Depending on how long the car has been on, how many miles you've driven the car in the current session, or the battery warmth, the engine will come on when it wants to. You won't be able to pulse and glide every time you want to, but you should be able to do it the majority of the time you want to. I have an '09 Prius, and it really annoys me when the engine is on when I don't think it should be on. 😂
@Jeo-What
@Jeo-What 6 ай бұрын
On most HEV without heat pump (usually only on some PHEV or EV), the engine needs to keep the battery charged while keeping itself warm for normal operation instantaneously in all conditions ;therefore, whenever the battery fuel level dips below the minimal programed level or whenever the ICE (Internal combustion engine aka gas/diesel engine) dips below the normal preset operations temperature the ICE will always kicks in to fulfill the needs.

The car is on. When he takes his foot off the gas pedal, the gasoline engine turns off, but the car is still rolling forward. When he gently presses his foot back on the gas pedal, the electric engine takes over to keep the car moving forward for a while.

I have seen Hypermillers doing so but usually in hypermiling competitions as it is a very dangerous practice since all the electric components are turned off including the power steering, power breaks and all the hydraulic system of the vehicle.

What does pulse mean, accelerate?
@SeanBaker

Yes. It means accelerating up to the speed limit or just slightly over it.

. Do you take your foot off the pedal after you pulse?

@@phalisatumblin1249 yes, and then you slightly push the pedal again, and you should be on battery only for a while.

I can’t do this. Dynamic cruise control is the way to go for me on the highway. If toyota would update cruise control to do pulse and glide, that would be great and I’d do it.

@Jeo-What 6 ай бұрын
I have a KIA 6-speed DCT hybrid and I find the cruise control uses ~1.5-2 MPG more fuel than when how I hypermiling manually on my daily 100KM country rout at up to 90KM/h speed so I stopped using it and my MPG increases.

in fact "pulse and glide" is increasing fuel economy in classic engines as well... you have really high fuel consumption for a little amount of time and then maintain the speed with low RPMs ;)

At times I can see how the technic works but sometimes the engine stays on even going down a non steep hill. What does this mean when the engine stays on for longer than expected? I m new to the world of hybrids. Only one week now. The total miles driven seems to match the miles to empty and I don’t think it’s suppose to work like that correct? Thanks for your info…

I'll try it tommorow when I pick up my Rav 4 Hybrid Ltd in Windchill Pearl....because after a year the only thing Lexus could deliver was two price increases ..no NX350H 😂 😂...ahhh fck it I'm saving 8500 and 350 a year in insurance. Plus I have more bells 😂 Then a NX350H Signature with Premium Package.

@@donaldbanner2185 you can only wait so long for a car. It's been a year still with no dealer allocation. My 18 year old Honda needs an update. Yes a Rav 4 is not a Lexus but I have had both on order for the same length of time I was told 6 months for the Lexus and 12 months for the R4. .....Well Lexus FAILED. And I'm in Canada where the NX350H is made ! .. I honestly believe the dealer did not want to order my Lexus as I didn't order the higher option package. Plus changing the model year from a 23 to a 24 just to jack the price again .....was the final kick in the groin
