My grandparents emigrated to the U.S. from Croatia in the early 1900s, but they passed when I was too young to have known them. Only English was permitted in their home, so mom never really learned to speak Croatian. Now when I call I say a couple of words in Croatian, and she recognizes and somehow remembers the sound of the language. She's 95, and when ai said "Volim te" she cried. I would love to be the first of her children to speak Croatian, even a little.

Wow, that is such a moving story, thanks for sharing! Old people have their childhood memories come back, I have seen the same with my grandma I took care of when she was 94 years old.... I am sure your mom remembers and understands! "Volim te" is the most important thing to know how to say in Croatian :D Anyways, if you'd like to start learning Croatian with me, it would be an honor! If you ever decide, these are the options: www.croatianexperiencewithsanda.com/learning-croatian/

i agree my grandparents came to US in 1906 from Croatia to Kansas City. My mother spoke fluent Croatian and was teaching me when she passed away at age 95. I think Sanda is a great teacher!

Hello! I am enjoying your video’s. I am learning Croatia, the language and the culture, because my Dad’s family was from Yugoslavia, now Slovenia. In reading a book of Medjugorje, the people look like me and my family. I am studying for personal reasons to re-identify myself with a culture that I feel very close and attached to. My dad taught us how to make potica and Krofas and enjoy special things from where his mom and dad came from. I am Catholic and it is my faith that has brought me here. Thank you for sharing this with us! Jeanette

You are so right Sanda! I found the Croatians very appreciative when I struggled out a few words to show them the respect they deserve: big smiles, a few laughs and I think a more generous serving of what I ordered! :) Lovely people like the Slovenians. I would focus more on Croatia and Slovenia next time. Highlights of Europe!

I agree 100% and I'm glad you had such a nice experience with the Croatian language! I LOVE Slovenia and the Slovenians. I used to live there, too.

@@CroatianExperiencewithSanda Well that’s good as you remind me of a few Slovenians I talked to in Ljubljana. :) And Croatia too of course!

My experience has been that I love it here very much and try to say little things but when people respond it's very hard to understand unless I know the exact word. English is so common I eventually give up but I want to be better because I love it here and I love the kindness of the people, even the grumpy ones.

Hey Sanda, my name is Nicholas/Nikola Kalanj. I was born and have always lived in Australia. I am of a Croatian Father and and Irish Mother Mum passed recently😢 but her Croat was cleaner than Dad's. 😂 so.. I would love to surprise him some time with a reasonably fluent conversation... He is 83, it might make his day to tell him we are going HOME (would be MY 1st time) for a few weeks to see our Family, our Land and properties in his native tongue ❤ Can you assist?

Dobar dan. I tried to say some phrases for purchasing coffee or beer but they come over like they are suprised and some talked back in English. I'm in Zagreb right now. Elderly people seem to be more open to aproach. Young people both men and woman do not seem to be that open for conversation to strangers when I aproach them in bot Croatian or English. Althrough I have met a young men via his parents which I have spent a day with drinking coffee and beer.
