Hey everyone, welcome to a special installment of Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be diving back through the years on the channel and discussing 10 Harry Potter Theories that all pertain to our favourite double agent SEVERUS SNAPE.
The range of theories is pretty broad, and they paint Snape in a bunch of different lights. They cover his hidden motivations, secret talents, and answer some questions about his origins.
As this is a compilation style video spanning YEARS of the channel please be aware of some varied audio levels, inconsistent numbering and some (but hopefully not too much) repeated information.

Had Snape been truly bad through and through, he could have saved his own life by telling Voldemort that Draco was the true owner of the elder wand since he had disarmed Dumbledore. However, he had enough goodness in him to spare Draco by keeping what he knew to himself. Also, I think he was ready to join Lily in the afterlife. Snape had been miserable since her death and just like Cadmus Peverell, the brother whose fiancee had died and he couldn't bring her back as the happy young woman she had been, he chose to join her.

I have this long, thought out, general theory about Severus Snape. I have come to realize, Snape's will to live died after Lily got married with James. Then he wanted to join forces with Dark wizards to maybe, if possible, be able to fullfil his vengeance against James, Remus and Sirius. But then the prophecy came and his slipup. After that his outlook on life changed radically after Lily died. He felt so incredibly guilty, he wanted to mend his existence by doing some good. So ultimately he found himself commited to the cause Dumbledore, The Order and Harry were fighting against. I think he didn't want to live but wanted to make his death meaningful.

he bacame a teacher because a) Voldemort wanted a spy on Dumbles b) Dumbles made Snape teach after the downfall of Voldy, so he could keep an eye onto Severus and made him teach. Which for me makes me more sympathetic towards Snape I work with people - IF you choose to work with people, you should actually like people (no matter the age group) and be a social, emapthic person. What we learn about Snape (who is my favorite character, BUT I can see all his flaws) is that he is socially akward - not very good at expressin feelings and even having trouble putting his feelings into words. He came from an abusive household (yes, the book comfirms that) and so he pobably was a bit stunted with feelings/trust and emotions. and then.. you are sort of unsocial and probably do not like people and have to teach the most dangerous subject in Hogwarts (that every student has to take for 5 years) So I think it can be sort of highly frustrating (and dangerous) to be kept in a position taht does not work for you. I do not excuse his bullying- I simply want to show he did not choose to be a teacher. I think he would have probably choosen a path as researcher/potioneer and I thnk he would have been brilliant at this seeing what he did in school with established potions recipes. And no it's never okay to be a bully (not at a young age and certainly not as a teacher) ut all tos epeople who always ty to understand and give doubt to Drraco never consider that Snape did not have a choice for at least the 17 yeras he became a double agent. As said, a lot is in the books in small flashbacks, Snape telling Lilly hw his father was visicous and hot tempered towards his mom and the memory flashback Harry glances with his protego in the books. It's also clear that child Severus was neglected (look at the clothing and desciption) and his looks. So yeah... But yes, I would love origins stories Maybe one about Lupin, one about the brothers Black (yes, inlcude Regulus) or a founders series, HELL even a story about the Gaunts

The difference you see every time avada kedavra is used is striking throughout the movies. The bug thing in moodys class just kinda died, cedric was thrown several yards and died immediately, sirius stood a second looking around before falling slowly into the veil, Dumbledore stumbledored backwards and fell off the tower. I wouldve liked consistency, but maybe like you said, the amount of intent has something to do with it

My theory is Gryffindors students before Snape's teaching era are rowdy, cruel, and self-righteous. James Potter and the Marauders weren't outliers but are the norm. After Snape became a teacher, his bullying forged Gryffindors to be righteous, kind, and caring.

I think this is a good theory, though I must modify it by my own experience teaching. Sometimes one year is just particularly off the chain. My first year in, the 9th graders were simply awful. I thought 9th graders must just have brain damage or something at that age. Next year’s freshmen were very chill and even studious. I know how certain personalities can develop a culture, and I agree that the cruelty exhibited by James et al could have been universal for possibly several years. I just doubt it would be an implicit feature of Gryffindors. Things return to status quo relatively quickly minus the movers and shakers of class culture.

I always thought Gryffindors were pretty self-righteous in general. With the exception of a few like Minerva, Ron and Harry. Gryffindors are reckless with their bravery and don't always consider others when they rush into action.

I’ve always thought about that. It wouldn’t make sense that they were horrible to snape solely, it’s very likely they tormented many students, and if they nearly killed snape for a ‘joke’ it wouldn’t be outside the realms of possibility for similar ‘pranks’ to be played on others

That's like saying you wouldn't have cared if Voldemort had REALLY killed Harry. Because if you remember, Harry almost killed Malfoy(Not fighting for Malfoy, just using your logic against you).

@@jamesjohnson8227 That's really not the same thing, Harry didn't know what he was doing, and he had a somewhat reasonable justification anyway. James knew exactly what he was doing and he didn't even pretend to have a justification, it was just cruelty.

@@ElfangorQ7N A few things. One: NO ONE said ANYTHING about their justifications. Just their involvement. Two: You're BOTH loud and wrong. James didn't almost get Snape killed, it was Sirius. James was the one who did the saving, pulling Snape back before he almost met the business end of Remus' claws. Three: There was nothing REASONABLE about using a spell you don't know the effects of. Harry was justified, but not reasonable. And four: Despite being school bullies, and WHATEVER justification they may have for their actions, my initial point still stands.

On the "flying" theory: I think it's entirely possible that it began with Lily. Having zero knowledge of the wizarding world, she would not have been bound by preconceived limitations of magic. She wasn't aware wizards don't fly. To her mind NOBODY could fly. But she WAS aware that she could do things seemingly nobody else could. I think her joy of jumping off the swing would naturally have led to her having the INTENT to stay in the air as long as possible, thus leading to her floating and eventually flying. Am I crazy for thinking this?🤔

I think Snape has used sectum sempra on Remus. But to say that Snape didn't use it on James is in very shaky ground. Yes it was much more vicious on malfoy. But Snape was the one who created the spell and knew what it could do. When he used it it would have been much more controlled than hay who was simply using it from a book for the first time

Circa @32:00 I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that JKR said Dumbledore was a Bee in animagus form, I could well be wrong but it’s always been in my mind, that Dumbledore could turn into a Bee and potentially be able to watch over Harry closer than he realised

Snape didn't kill Dumbledore the fall killed him. That's why Harry was frozen in place until after Dumbledore had hit the ground and actually died

Yes Snape used avada kedavra but he didn't mean it, it's why the light wasn't right and why the immobalizing jinx on harry didn't lift until after Dumbledore hit the ground. Snapes spell sent him over the side, the ground killed him

I always wondered why Dumbledore putting Tom Riddle’s Ring on his finger would curse him to death, when Ron, Hermoine, and Harry wear the locket during most of book seven. Also, I feel like Dumbledore wouldn’t be dumb enough to put the ring on in the first place, and most definitely had the power to cure it. Any thoughts? I’m new to this channel, and I’m so here for this!

I'm inclined to think that Avada Kadavra has a second lessor known use. That of mercy killing. Instead of a painful quick death with a green spell light. You get a cool blue light that gives a quick painless death. Hence the blue color with the same spell words. In this case the death was "necessary" And a circease from the pain that Dumbledore was suffering. - a mercy killing.

Because why would Snape not tell Dumbledor that Peter was not to be trusted since everyone know that James, Serious, Remus and Peter were close friends. So Snape would surely tell if Peter were loyal to He who must not be named. So were he under treat just after Snape told about it?

Snape didn’t want anyone to be better then him at potion making. He was a genius at the subject. Hell, as a student he figured out how to improve most of the potions in his textbook. I think he didn’t want anyone else to know what he did. He probably could have made a fortune making new textbooks. Not to mention what kind of growth the subject could have had. I think it was more important to him that he could belittle students.

I love your theories I also agree on a lot of your views on Snape (and he is my favorite character) but I also do not agree with a lot of things. I tend to be very sympathetcic towards child Severus and see where adult Snape came from I also thing his "love" for Lily was sort of creepy (and obsessive) my favorite theory is the flight one since I have never heard i anywhere before. I'd be also sort of funny that Snape was able to teach something to Voldemort that he had learned from Lily (makes me laugh)

I think the sorting hat sorted Severus Snape wrongly. Snape is more suited to Ravenclaw. Snape wasn't ambitious except for defending himself not for power.

I so agree! JK stetaed so herself. Snape was one of the few istakes theSoting hat makes. I also agree on Ravenclaw. My theory is - the sorting hat takes your choice into account and we know Severus mom was a pure blood witch from a sacred 28 family. So let me wager a guess which house she was in... Slytherin, probably We can also assume that all the dark spells Severus seemed to know when he started Hogwrats - where could he have learned them? His mom maybe? as a way to protect himself as a Half Blood with a mother who was disowned for marrying a muggle? So... maybe child Severus was sort of on the sam epostion as Harry and Hermione - the sorting hat was choosing between two houses Ravenclaw and Slytherin and Severus wanted Slytherin to honor his mom? That's actually my headcanon! Harry actively chooses Gyffindor over Slytherin Hermione sort of lets he hat know "wherever I can make friends" and Neville s wish is simple overruled. So maybe Severus was like Harry thinking "Slytherin, Slytherin, Slytherin" and th hat then accepted his wish
