It's cliché, but it's been said "Find opportunity in the crisis" Seeing your mess is a "problem", but now that things are more clear, you have the "opportunity" to better understand the problem and work on it. An old boss of mine told me to "focus on the solution, not the problem". We were talking about something specific at work, but I started using it universally. What a game changer. My whole perspective on life changed. "Deal with it, don't dwell on it" is another good one Best wishes!

Great to hear your story and success against this demon. Retired military vet that struggles mightily with drinking, but still functioning. The shit don’t even taste that good…but some of us will do anything to cover up mental and physical pains suffered from military service. At this point, the goal is to start by only drinking the recommended amount per day and build up to skipping days, weeks, months, a year…small steps.
@GettingSoberAgain3 жыл бұрын
You're right, there is no exact way for anyone to approach becoming alcohol free and slowly tapering off is certainly a better option for those who are heavy and longtime drinkers. Day 66. Nearly 1/3 the way too 100!! That will be such a milestone for me. I haven’t had any issues so far, it seems odd. As I’ve mentioned before, I think the mindset change has been super important. I’m not trying to quit, I HAVE quit. It’s a different perspective in my mind. Still mindful that old habits die hard, so I’m still holding myself accountable each and every day, and posting here helps me achieve that. ❤ EDIT: on that note, I will add for the benefit of anyone who reads this, that if you are struggling just like I have many times before, have you thought about the perspective you are viewing your attempt at sobriety from? This has worked for me so far and it’s my best stretch yet. But I don’t see it as a stretch, I see it as another day free from the chains of a poisonous, one sided relationship. And it feels great.

Day 80 checking in. Still strong, working hard to make that last. EDIT: I felt like having a drink earlier. I had a stressful time dealing with an agency for my onboarding to my new role. I picked up wine and vodka on the shopping (not for me) but damn, I felt close to having a drink. I knew I’d feel bad if I had, it was tempting to think I would stop at one or two, but I’ve been there before. I even said to my wife that I’d have a glass of wine with her, and she calmly asked me if I was sure, because although it’s my choice, how would I feel about it afterwards. I remained steadfast, and I’m glad I did. Just goes to show that plain sailing can be almost railroaded in short order. I’m glad I have the support here and in my home 🙏

What a great list of reminders for getting and staying sober Jae. I went for a walk yesterday and had a feeling that something was wrong and as I strolled along I realised that what was worrying me was the fact it was evening and I was out walking with other people around me. For the very longest time I hadn’t done this, I was too busy drinking!!! Now I am free of this and so many other burdens. Please keep those reminders coming Jae. They are really encouraging. With thanks from your admirer Patrick (60 days sober)

That is the right attitude! Think of recovering from heavy alcohol use like recovering from a broken leg. Sobriety gives you the time you need to truly heal. For most people out of the tens of thousands of comments I've read, it takes about 3 months before you really truly can acclimate back into triggering places or situations where you are strong enough to stand up on your feet and RESIST the temptation, BECAUSE, the temptation will be mostly non existent. Do everything that you can to protect your newly hatched sobriety. It is fragile. And it needs proper care and support 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Today will be my first day of sobriety. Seeing a Psychiatrist and a therapist. On Naltrexone and librium for withdrawals. I am a functioning alcoholic. I have great everything. I have been a heavy drinker for 40+ years. every bad decision or action I did was backed by booze. Covid times made me drink more and I lost my best friend of 43 years last August from kidney failure. (Diabetes) I was rapidly going down hill and I saw it my self. I know it was a slippery slope and needed help. Talked to my primary care giver and he recommended the docs I am seeing. I decided last night would be the last night of drinking. My father and grandfather were alchys. I may have the gene. Anyway, thank you for your channel and time. I will face this M F'ing demon like a super hero because I need for ME!

That's the right attitude! It's easy to play the victim, but someone in your family tree needs to be the one to break the cycle! Sobriety is a journey of which you are PRACTICING navigating. Be patient with yourself. 99% of us don't get it right on the first try (myself included). Keep your eyes on the goal. Fill your days with new HEALTHY habits, and start stringing together those first 3 days. Let me know when you do. Posting this in the main comments as suggest by Jae, a great idea to share. I found this only yesterday, and on my journey with sobriety it hit me in ALL the feels about all the things in life I should be appreciating more and the things I need to worry about less. This could have been written yesterday, but it’s is from 1927. Desiderata: Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. by Max Ehrmann

5 days sober and my longest is 50 days a few years ago. During those 50 days what broke my sobriety is that I didn't notice any big changes in myself so I thought what's the use if nothing crazy positive in my life changes, like financial freedom or something to show for my sacrifice. Sounds like a negative outlook on life but I believe most people think the same.

if you ask yourself "am I there yet?" and the answer is "no", what do you do: quit, or keep going? each person has their own answer. for some people it's quit. for some people it's keep going. for most of us, it was the former. for some of us, it has become the latter 💪🏽
