*Japan uses blue lights for "go" rather than green.* ALL the Looney Tunes games on NES and Game Boy were originally something else in Japan. Think Doki Doki Panic vs. SMB2. Also, the Angry Video Game Nerd did two NES Bugs Bunny game videos, this one and the Crazy Castle series, and (to me) they're some of the funniest skits in my entire adult memory. I don't know if you're into crude slapstick but if so, I highly recommend both (in order). All the classic tropes are in there. I'm actually going to re-watch them immediately after this. Thanks again for yet another enjoyable video. I really want to try several of these games now!

Sorta. They actually use the same green we do, they just classify it as "ao", which is the original word that means both blue and green, rather than "midori", which is the modern word that its closer to western green. How these are distinguished (at least on the blue-green border) is often by context more than shade--green vegetation is still ao and not midori, and for whatever reason, traffic lights are classified as ao. So even though it's the same green, they still use blue to depict it sometimes since it's in the same domain--same as how we probably wouldn't bat an eye if someone depicts a traffic light with lime green rather than a more accurate green. (this isn't unique to Japan of course... anglos typically classify alligators as green despite the fact the amount of green on any given alligator is minuscule if present at all; calling anything else that was the color of a typical alligator "green" would probably get you side-eyed)

For Rescue Rangers, here's a little trick I learned when this game first came out: Start the game as two-player co-op and kill off the other player (you can pick him up and throw him into enemies). You'll only need half the flowers necessary for the floating star to appear.

Kabuki Quantum Fighter is so good and so fluid! I never thought about his extra jump frames were actually a negative thing, but when I played it it absolutely got me hit. And I love that Little Mermaid game, but it's hardly an afternoon's worth of time! Great stuff!

Those extra frames are tricky in a few games I've played before! It was really only the flame ascension part that drove me nuts in Kabuki Quantum Fighter because I couldn't parse out the timing. I'm sure there's a better way, but it evaded me! Thanks so much for popping by again!

Awesome video as always HG! Had to laugh at the Bugs Bunny bosses walking …MENACINGLY. For Chip & Dale, the 2p mode feels like more of a challenge than 1p as it can get chaotic with both munks whipping objects around and colliding with one another - but that is half the fun of couch co-op!

He's been fiddling with vintage lenses on a modern camera, so all of that was recorded using a lens from the 1970s. ​@@hungrygoriya I mean Japanese traffic signals are red for stop, yellow for wait and any-shade-between-green-and-blue for go. I think it's very interesting how what words we have for colours affect us. On the other end of the Japanese green-blue, we have the Russian blues. What we in English (and Swedish) call blue is considered two separate colors in Russian. Golubój is light/sky blue, while sínij is deep/almost-indigo blue. Come to think of it, here in the west we do the green-blue-thing with the "yellow" light too! In both Swedish and in US English the middle light is called yellow, but technically it's more of an amber (which might be what it's called in the UK?). The Dutch call it orange! I'm pretty sure no one would bat an eye at a middle light in any shade between a pretty pale yellow and a deep orange.

Astyanax. I don't recall if it has infinite continues, but proper use of Magic, taking your time a bit through the stages, and find the semi-safe spots during bosses make it possible to get through it in your first few attempts. The only difficult parts are cheap knockbacks over pits from a few surprise monster spawns.

The line at around 19 minutes 30 seconds actually made me laugh out loud, the very matter of fact delivery is perfect. Toki is a game that I've always overlooked but I really like a bunch of the boss designs and a lot of the environmental pixel art in the clips you showed. I'm also curious about how the game plays, since it's pretty unusual for player projectiles to shoot from that high on the sprite, so I suppose I'm going to have to add it to the list of purchases my local game store can thank you for at some point.

Love the intro; that kind of darkness with bright colors is perfectly evocative of the NES era! The only one of these I never bothered to finish was Monster in my Pocket, and I enjoyed most of them quite a bit. Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout is the one I've spent the most time with, largely because I love the strange environments, and all the weird things you can do by hammering enemies while already standing on their heads; sending them sailing across the screen, silently screaming in a blind panic before colliding with another foe (sometimes with unique effects, depending on what you hit) was always fun to experiment with. Side note: I just finished a very half-year Yakuza marathon in September, and Japan apparently has blue traffic signals. Also funny you should mention the continue screen from Toki; I remember playing the Arcade original, and the continue screen from that is your girl pleading with you to continue, "Or else I'll be killed!" which I guess is one way to keep you pumping in the quarters... Were I to add to this list, I'd say Dragon Spirit: The New Legend, Mega Man 6, and maybe Jackie Chan's Action Kung-Fu, though the TurboGrafx-16 version of that last one is a bit tougher. If Japanese versions count, I'd throw in Mad City, which is the Japanese Bayou Billy. I might also recommend Garfield: Caught in the Act for the Genesis; I wouldn't necessarily say it's one of the easiest games, but it's a surprisingly solid (and bizarre) Garfield game.

Little Samson was so good, but way too short. I was so sad it was over so quickly! Felix the Cat is also fun, but it doesn't feel as polished as other platformers. The panning up and down definitely makes some parts feel less fair than others.

Kirby's Adventure is definitely a game that belongs on a list like this. I wasn't good at games as a kid, but Kirby's Adventure was easy enough to get to the end. The final bosses were a little tricky, but easy to learn how to beat them.

i rarely have the option to watch your twitch streams live but i did watch when you played power blade and was impressed how easy you made it look. Especially sense you never used the healing rations that lets you heal at any time. I do agree that power blade is a manageable game but I definitely used rations a few times to reach the end.

Your assessment of these titles is… interesting. _Power Blade_ and _Monster In My Pocket_ aren't typically "easy" games, but everyone's experience is different, so… As an aside, if you think _Power Blade_ was _too_ easy and want more of a challenge, you should try the original Famicom version, _"Power Blazer."_ It feels like the prototype of what we go and, despite the fact levels are more straightforward, it's far less forgiving. Happy new year to you! Nice to see you here! My criterion for this was how fast I finished them, and I beat all of these in four hours or less, sometimes my first time playing. I'd like to try a harder version of Power Blade so I might look into that Famicom version sometime. Thanks for the info!

Great list! Many of these titles were promoted in Nintendo Power specifically because they were excellent entry level games for those not already gamers.

Great video as always hg! Love the whole reveal thing you and the hubbs did! I've only tried the majority of these much much more recently, as a another nes household when new, yet owning few games. I havent tried all of these yet (all but monster in my pocket, and bugs bunny. I did randomly beat one of his crazy castle games on Gameboy tho)! Thanks for reminding me! In fact, Ive only played/beaten the nes/Gameboy little mermaid on a physical cart of all the games on this list. If you havent played tiny toon Adventures on nes, I've never finished it, but I enjoy the heck out of it, and it never makes me stressed. And also, the noahs ark segment in Bible Adventures is my go-to "I need to beat a game" game. As far as source material for these games, I grew up with Felix the Cat the movie, you may enjoy it! I'm glad I wasnt the only looney tunes fan as a kid! I'm comforted in your comments how much you love this generation, so many people growing up told me I was crazy for loving this generation of games when there were so many newer, "better", systems, so they said. I'd take nes over n64 any day.

Is The Little Mermaid on Game Boy the same game or something different? If it's different, I think I'd like to give it a try sometime. I still need to try Crazy Castle. Any of them actually! I've only tried Birthday Blowout so far and want to play more. Noah's Ark is a funny time. I've beaten the other two games on Bible Adventures but not that one! The Felix the Cat movie you say? I'll see if I can check that out sometime for a little more context on the game. I just remember catching The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat on YTV back in the day. It was an updated cartoon from the 90s that didn't really stand out to me at all since I barely remember anything about it apart from the theme song. Looney Tunes was life back when I was young. The Bugs Bunny & Tweety show was awesome! I also have a bunch of the older episodes and specials on tape. I've been digitizing those and it's been really fun to go back and watch some of those again. You're in good company here with me, haha... I love the NES (and Master System/Game Boy) a lot, as well as the stuff that came right after. The 3D generations feel so much more hit and miss to me. How fun, we are opposite! I've never gotten far in baby moses, and only made it to the level before Goliath in D&G. My mom beat noahs ark despite "not liking video games", she was the first person I ever saw beat a game! I believe the movie was its own thing between series! I had a local abc affiliate (in usa), so we totally had The Bugs Bunny & Tweety show! Ive seen a few of the specials, and I hope to see all of them someday. Hearing the music from Shadow of the Ninja took me all the way back. Me and my best friend from elementary school used to have an awesome time playing the two player co-op on that game. Those were some awesome weekends. He's passed on now, and I still have the cartridge we used to play. I understand that it catches an above average price on ebay, but for me it's a priceless keepsake.

As a kid at a sleepover, my friends and I beat Power Blade. We had rented it for the weekend and I remember beating the final level and boss myself. Great game.

You’re better at games than me, that level 3 boss in Shadow of the Ninja destroys me every time! Feels like one of the hardest NES games to me, but that’s such an individual experience. Duck Tales was one of the first games I ever completed. Once you learn how to pogo jump the only hard thing is figuring out how to find the last boss revisiting Transylvania.

Shadow of the Ninja was definitely one of the harder games on this list for me, but I finished it pretty quickly all said. Something just clicked for me with the bosses after a few tries, except that yellow guy that kept spawning on top of me. Duck Tales is still one I need to try to finish someday. It seems fun enough, but the pogo jump was messing with me.

Easy NES games are gifts. These were the games that actually ended up making one happy as a kid because you could rent it for the weekend and be done with it before returning it. Darkwing Duck is my fondest memory of an easy NES game.

Cool idea for this video, really enjoyed it a lot! I've played all the games here except for Toki, and I agree with you. The things a lot of these games do are far more forgiving and lenient than many others out there. There's less RNG and more chances to improve with each attempt, even on the ones with limited continues like Shadow of the Ninja. It's amazing how Power Blade worked out as it did as a fun game here, but the sequel to me was absolutely miserable. The difficulty was increased tremendously with nonstop cheap deaths, very few checkpoints, very long levels and even a boss rush at the end with not a single checkpoint in it! Maybe they decided to make it that hard for being anti rental or something, haha. Looking forward to the next video, I always appreciate watching these!

I believe the first non-Point&Click Adventure game I beat as a child was Monster in My Pocket - specifically a bootlegged version that starred Batman and the Flash replacing Dracula and the Monster, but of course offered no explanation as to why the superheroes were tiny and how they could allow monsters to take over the town "While they were watching TV". Even so, I adored the game as a Primary school kid and beat it dozens of times, sometimes with friends. On a console where even seeing past the second level of most games seemed an impossible dream, having a game I could fall back on (and feel confident about beating) did wonders for my confidence to keep trying with harder action games. As rewarding as clocking a really hard game can be, I feel games like this were and are essential to any one's journey into the hobby, as diving into the deep end with something like Ninja Gaiden the first time one picks up a controller is unlikely to inspire one to want to keep trying for long.

Someone else mentioned this very bootleg version of Monster in My Pocket. How fascinating! I love a nice, easy game once in a while but I also enjoy a challenge. The Little Mermaid was the only game I remember finishing when I was really young. I agree about your statement on confidence and entry into the hobby. You have to start somewhere, and starting out with really hard games might not be the best way to build up that confidence or skill for that matter.

I'm very grateful for my copy of Little Samson. A friend sent it to me and I was so happy to finally be able to play it. I've played a ton of Master System stuff and actually have lots of reviews from that console buried deep in the channel. I've been doing lots of NES stuff lately but I do love games from the 8- and 16-bit generations and play lots of those on stream as well. I wanted to push on with this video since I finished a whole bunch of these titles this past summer and was feeling inspired to talk about them.

I remember playing probably half of these as a kid, and I had a great time with the ones I did. My older sister and I played through Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout together a couple of times on different weekends, for example, and I still remember us having fun breaking apart the Sphinxes in the desert level because of how you could break individual blocks and yet the remaining ones would stay animated. So you could have a floating tail, for example. I guess we were making our own fun. But I also remember the night I got The Little Mermaid, I beat it in about two and a half hours, and my dad was so angry about it. He'd bought it at full price and now I was "done" with it. I had to tell him that I wanted to play through it again at least a couple more times just so I could see everything, because there were rocks I hadn't been able to move because I had lost my powerups, but he wasn't convinced. I'm not sure he ever got over it, but I really do remember that game, and getting good enough to clear it without losing my powerups, fondly. I definitely didn't own Little Samson as a kid, though, haha. I think it's funny that it went from this extremely obscure game nobody knew about to this super-rare and valuable collector's piece that everybody wished they had to just being another game that, if you want to play NES games, you can figure out how to get it and can play it just fine. Anyway, thanks as always for the trip down memory lane, and for reminding me of some holes in my knowledge of the NES library that I should really fill in one of these days.

It's funny you mention the Sphinxes because I kept hoping there would be something hidden behind them. I'm sorry that your dad got so upset about The Little Mermaid. I'm pretty sure I got my copy when it was brand new as well, but I can't quite remember how old I was. I think I was very young, like maybe 5 or 6? It probably took me a while to beat it. The first boss and the sunken ship boss took me a long time to finish back then. Little Samson's definitely worth playing any way you can, as one of my favourite KZbin pals SNESDrunk would say. I'm really thankful to have a copy of the game as part of my collection now. Someone I know gave it to me since they knew I'd treasure it and keep it rather than reselling it. I really enjoy having it on the shelf. You're very welcome for the memory trip, and I hope you do get around to trying out some of these that you haven't had the opportunity to yet. Good luck!
