Hope your daughter recovers completely, mentally and physically. Those crashes can be scary, Glad she survived. You'll get through this. To me, the civic, being essentially the Corolla at the base models, but with such a presence for enthusiasts and well puts it above. I would say it should be #1. You see them everywhere, car meets, and just on the road. Harsh winters, hot summers, pouring rain, off-road, on track. Everywhere. Manual, automatic, somewhat high tech to basic. Definitely up there for me. The 911 is the greatest sports car hands down, but for THE car, gotta be the civic.

Honorable mentions... VW Golf - it's a people's car, it's been one of the most popular cars for decades and still going strong. Mercedes S Class - the absolute benchmark for luxury. The choice of many politicians and rich people. Audi 80/100/A4 - very popular, and practical cars from the 90s, I remember seeing them everywhere because they were so universally liked.

Mini - every single front wheel drive, transverse engined hatchback car owes something to the mini. It virtually created the hot hatch segment (while not technically a hatchback). The mini rewrote the rules for rallying and motorsport by winning countless races against much more powerfull competition due to sublime handling. From 1959 to 2000, over 5 million we sold - a 41 year production. While other cars may claim to have a higher sale count or production run, they invariably include various models where the first car is unrecognisable from the last, except for the name. From rock stars to royalty, they were increadibly popular and deserve to be in the top 2.

I will argue, the Quattro rewrote the rules for rallying.
@steven1000000000
@steven1000000000 17 күн бұрын
@@porsche911235 Sure, the Audi Quatro S1 was one of the most successful rally cars in it's time, but the mini was equally dominant in the 60's, maybe even more so. It won the Monte Carlo rally basicaly 4 times in a row, beating the likes of Porsche 911's with twice the engine displacement. It went on to take 32 International Rally Victories, 5 British Saloon Car Championship titles, 2 European Touring Car Championship titles and countless others. From rally, road, endurance to autocross, mini's were there. The Audi was only really successful from '82 - '84. As the for the "greatest car of all time" question... it's not even competition between these two.
@porsche911235
@porsche911235 17 күн бұрын
@@steven1000000000 The FIA literally rewrote the rules of Rallying because of the Quattro and since then all the teams have used 4WD technology. The mini has not proven that FWD was the solution to winning in motor racing, sorry to be factual. I have owned 4 minis and I can say that it is the best car ever produced, power to the masses sort of speak. The mini was a packaging revolution and brought to the public the experience of power with exceptional handling for a moderate price, something usually reserved for a few privileged people.
@steven1000000000
@steven1000000000 3 күн бұрын
@@porsche911235 Agreed - The Quatro was great and as you said. The rules were literally rewrote thereafter. But, looking back, in the late 50's to mid 60's many of the rally cars then were "tanks" with large engines e.g. the Monte winning Mercedes-Benz W111, the Jag Mk VII or Citroën DS. The Mini came along and lead the charge for smaller lighter cars leading thereafter to the winning Porsche 911, Lancia Fulvia, Alpine-Renault A110 and eventually the Statos in the 70's. I'd also say after the Mini, most rallys seem to be dominated by either sports cars such as the Alpine-Renault/911 or cars that were built for racing from the start such as the Lancia Statos. There were some exceptions where "road cars" may have won such as the Fiat 131, but they were hardly anything like the standard road cars. Was the Mini the best "racing car" of all time - no. It was excelent for a time though. But, it's all the other things that were great about it that makes it one of the greatest cars of all time. I've also had 5 Mini's over the last 25 years and still drive one daily.

NSX arguably was a better car when it first launched that put a Stagnant sports car industry on its toes. At the time it took the power, speed, and comfort of a Ferrari and made it for a cost Fraction of the cost for its time. I argue to this day NSX type R is one of the greatest sports cars ever made and shows that in all honesty car technology peaked in the 90s before everything started going downhill.

100% agreed. This definitely should’ve made the list for all those reasons you mentioned. It changed the perception of super cars from being unreliable and expensive to something that more people can afford while still having the performance AND reliability. It’s not uncommon to see old NSXs with 100k+ miles on the clock with some as high as 400k in some instances.

Spot on with that take. The NSX is forever number 1 in my eyes
@themanwithsauce
@themanwithsauce 21 күн бұрын
What will always hold the NSX back in any talk of something like this is sales figures. Particularly in America, we look back at the NSX with a LOT of hindsight and think "Wow, what a great car. Real Ferrari performance levels but with Honda reliability and pricing!" but back then, it was "Wait you want HOW MUCH for something with a Honda badge? ANd it has how much less power than a corvette?.......Errrrrmmm....." and then they either bought a corvette, a 300zx, or something German. It's a high water mark for niche enthusiasts but in the grand scheme of things it didn't jump start a mid engined revolution among automakers, it didn't really "revive the sports car market" as the only other MR car that wasn't an exotic was the MR2/MRS and that also went the way of the dodo. Counterpick - Mazda Miata. The mIata ACTUALLY changed the sports car game and did it so well it kinda strangled the game a bit, but sales have remained strong enough to keep going, even during the times when it's the only one left. Without the miata, there is no FR-S/BRZ, Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky, BMW Z3/4, Mercedes SLK, and I think the hot hatch/sport compact boom around the turn of the millenium owes at least a small nod to the success of the miata proving that there was a strong market for liveable, affordable, economic performance vehicles.
@themanwithsauce
@themanwithsauce 21 күн бұрын
Miata Is Always The Answer. I see some people nominating other vehicles for how they "shook up the market" but very very few can actually say that, and the Miata is one of them. All day driveable comfort and reliability, autocross busting handling, and a low MSRP and running cost all in one car. A car so good it's simultaneously a near impossible task to topple it yet also a point of pride to try. 35 years now, and still defining the sports car standard.
@itsvmmc
@itsvmmc 21 күн бұрын
Debatable, this car is mostly liked by car enthusiasts but it isn't that appreciated by everyday people, and many wouldn't even recognize what it is. For the general public, Mazda 6 and Mazda 3 are the clear winners.
@themanwithsauce
@themanwithsauce 21 күн бұрын
@@itsvmmcI think the Miata name has more recognizability than car enthusiasts think, and it certainly was bought by a lot of people not typically associated with being car enthusiasts. Mazda 3 and 6 are relatively recent nameplates and I don't think the 6 is even made anymore, but it was a badge engineered Ford fusion/Mondeo anyways and the Mondeo is certainly a name you could throw into this ring, but not the 6.

The reach of F150s and Corvettes is largely limited to North America, so they're a bit hard to relate to outside that continent. I'd probably want to expand the list a bit and squeeze in the Nissan GT-R (giant-killing track performance), Jaguar E-Type (pure style), Mini (cheap, practical), Porsche 959 (AWD supercar). Another way of looking at it is to reverse engineer the things we take for granted in today's cars, for example, anti-lock braking systems, which first entered the market in a Mercedes S-class in the 1970s. It's very difficult to pin down a list like this, hahaha.

In terms of technology or design, it had no lasting impact as the air cooled engine or rear engine layout wasn’t adopted by the industry. For me, all the 911 did was give the make a lore and mystique that they’ve been riding on ever since.

Call me crazy but Id sub the 911 with the Miata for its mass appeal/sales. Also might include boot the Vette for your first glam/transition SUVs. 911 and Vette are great but had competition that didn't mean they changed the world when they came out. Maybe I would be right if we said the most important autos vs greatest.

Yup. Father of a family of 4 here. We've had a 2013 Corolla for eight years now and it has been the sole family mover we've had the whole time. Sure we'd like something bigger, but we're almost trapped by the fuel economy, reliability, and generally low cost. I've never been more impressed with a car I own than this one. Definitely stretching it's limits, but they can do more than people think.

I'm glad that you realize the distinction that was made between "sports cars" and "muscle cars" in the 1960's and 1970's. For many, sports cars needed to be fun to drive on twisty roads, but did not necessarily need to be powerful. On Sundays in many places (stores were usually closed), sports car enthusiasts would set up Autocross courses with traffic cones in large parking lots Having a car that was nimble and able to negotiate the tight courses was the goal. The second and especially the third generation of the Corvette, although good handling for the period, concentrated more on power (although handling enthusiasts tended towards the smaller, lighter engines) I recall that many would claim that a 2nd gen Corvair (which also had good independent rear suspension) could often beat a Corvette on these tight courses.

My list has some of the same vehicles, but I'd also change some things: * Model T: This one is pretty obvious as to why it's so important, just like in your video * VW Bug: Again, this was in the video and I agree with all your points * Ford Mustang: In place of the Corvette. The Corvette is cool, but way more people actually bought the Mustang. The Corvette was aspirational, but a regular person could buy a Mustang. Also, Ford understood that women also wanted cars and the Mustang was heavily marketed towards women, which up till then had been an untapped market. * AMC Eagle: AMC understood that people wanted a lifestyle vehicle that combined practical utility with easy usability. Every crossover owes its existence to the Eagle as a vehicle that can go "anywhere" but also be easy to drive and own. * Chrysler Minivan: Like the Eagle, the Minivan was a product for people who needed utility. Unlike the Eagle, people actually bought the Minivan and really helped change American suburban culture into what it's become today. * Ford F Series: Just like your video, I agree with all your points. * McLaren F1: The F40 is cool, the 959 is too, but the F1 is still to this day a modern and fresh design that car designers are still trying to catch up to. Also, the F1 is the pinnacle of the 20th century analog sports car, it's the culmination of all of humanity's car engineering experience up the that point and represents the dividing line between the new modern era and the old era. * Toyota Corolla: The CIVIC is a great car, but it's similar to the Corolla as a people mover, and nobody moves people around better than the Corolla. * Tesla Model Y: Whatever you might think about Tesla, there's no denying that they changed peoples attitudes about electric vehicles. Before Tesla, EV's were not viewed favorably, but now they're everywhere. And the Y is the one everyone bought. * Toyota 2000GT: The most important Japanese car because it showed the world that they can build a better European sports car than the Europeans. The 2000GT was a game changer in changing people's attitudes about what Japan could produce as a nation. * Honorable Mention: Volvo (as a company) for pushing safety and helping making all cars better and safer for everyone. Volvo made safety cool and profitable and we're all reaping the benefits of what Volvo did.

The Ferrari F40 over the Porsche 959? The Ferrari was just a stripped back car designed to hit an arbitrary top speed. It didn't even have interior door handles or carpet to save weight. The 959, on the other hand, had all the tech you could cram into a car in the 80's, setting a trend that you can see in every modern performance car. The engineers over at Nissan certainly were paying attention to the 959 when they were designing the R32 Skyline GT-R. And where is the Mini? The Mini wasn't the first transverse front wheel drive car, but it sure did popularize the layout. And there are plenty of small car homages, with their wheels at the corners to maximize interior space. Plus what about the Mazda MX5/Miata? For 35 years it's been the benchmark for modern sports cars. Jeremy Clarkson said it best: "The fact is that if you want a sports car, the MX-5 is perfect. Nothing on the road will give you better value. Nothing will give you so much fun. The only reason I'm giving it five stars is because I can't give it fourteen."

BASED take on the Porsche 959. Thank you. It's good to see someone who knows their history and did the research. If we are being objective about technology, innovation, and industry changing cars, then the Porsche 959 should objectively be on this list because of how much innovation and technology that it brought to the car industry (which all cars are still using to this very day), not to mention being the fastest car in the world when it was introduced, and also the reason why the 911 still exists and why the 911 is in the form that it currently resembles. Furthermore, you had the Porsche 959 S, which was capable of 211mph and 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, which in the 1980s made it an absolute Rocketship and a technical marvel, all wrapped into one package, which ate the F40 for breakfast. The Porsche 959 was a car industry milestone and put every other brand on notice, being the first true modern supercar ever built. Lastly, the only reason the Porsche 911 is still around, and is in it's current form, not to mention all the other great Porsche supercars and sportscars that came afterwards, is all thanks to the Porsche 959 supercar. Give the legend it's credit.

@ Awesome. Cool to meet someone from that era, who has such knowledge about the 959 and appreciates the 959 for what it is. The 959 is my favorite 1980s car and one of my favorite cars of all time. I was a 90s kid, so I didn't get to really grow up with it, but I did grow up with the 911 Turbo S (993) and the Ruf CTR2, which are my favorite cars of the 1990s, and also two of my favorite cars ever made. Anyway, you have great taste. The 959 is the best car of the 1980s hands down and set the bar for all cars in the car industry going forward for the last 40 years, including the 911 itself. It is so important to the car industry, that plenty of sports cars and supercars literally would not exist without it's influence, such as the R32 GTR Nissan Skyline and every other GTR that came afterwards all the way up until today, which all were clearly inspired by the 959, among many other sports cars and supercars for the last 40 years.

The Ford F-series is an U.S. only product. It works perfectly well in the U.S., and with limitations in neighboring Canada and Mexico. But everywhere else, it is quite a rare sight, and where there is a larger pickup market, it is dominated by the likes of the Toyota Hilux. That said, I would like to add the DKW F1 to the list. The current car layout with transversal engine and front wheel drive can be traced back to this 1931 car, predating the Citroën Traction Avant of 1934 by three years. Then, there is the 1922 Lancia Lambda, the first production car with a monocoque or single shell car body.

Oh man I love lists, especially when they involve cars. Here's my list, in as close to the right order as I can justify. I am trying to be as neutral as possible and while I totally love most of the cars on this list, I'm trying to just include cars that are particularly notable - Cars that can be seen as cultural milestones in one way or another. 10) Audi Quattro If the Model T put the world on wheels, the Quattro put the world on 4 wheels. The revolutionary all wheel drive system pioneered by this car went on to turn 4x4 from something meant only for trucks, to something used by the upper echelon of what cars are capable of, even today. They pioneered making the automobile able to handle some of the worst roads imaginable - and at speed. For better or worse, we have Audi to thank for AWD. 9) Ford F150 Nothing quite captures American exceptionalism like the F150. You covered basically all the points I would want to cover in the video, this was the vehicle, for better or for worse, that turned trucks from work vehicles to lifestyle vehicles for everyone. The fact that F150s are often imported to countries that have, frankly, perfectly fine options for trucks otherwise available, should speak volumes. 8) McLaren F1 I personally think the F1 supersedes the Veyron for what should exemplify the poster child of performance. What the Veyron needed 4 turbos and 16 cylinders to do, the F1 did with no turbos and "only" 12 cylinders. Or, got close. The Veyron didn't beat the F1 by much, but the more important thing is to look at the philosophy of the F1. The F1 was also supposed to be a very usable car by anyone who could afford one. Hell, look at Rowan Atkinson's, one of the most loved hypercars of all time. The F1 is the pinnacle of innovative problem solving and simplicity-based solutions to engineering challenges. It feels like a car that does so much more with so much less than anything after it. I point to the F1 as the ultimate picture of what determined engineering can achieve. Still to this day, the F1 holds the production car speed record for the longest time. 7) Dodge Caravan (and badge-engineered friends) The Caravan, along with the closely related K cars, are the cars that saved Chrysler. However, saving a single failing American car company is not enough to earn a spot on this list. The Caravan represented the USA's return to relevance. This was a swing and a grand slam for the American automotive industry. The Caravan was something that told the world that we're done messing about, done being out-done by every Asian marque around, and we have something to bring to the table. The Caravan was adopted by families across the country and was for many, a gathering place that symbolized togetherness, and Dodge's focus on safety and value was an easy sell to many families that needed a vehicle that grew with them. If the world was built on the back of full-size vans, the world was grown out of the back seats of Caravans. The Caravan represented a phenotype that is incredibly popular today - The unibody crossover vehicle. Whether people will admit it or not, most modern unibody "SUVs" are closer to a Dodge Caravan than they are to a Jeep Wrangler. Really it ends up being all marketing, but that's the reality. Again, for better or worse, the Caravan put unibody people movers on the road. 6) Honda Civic The Civic competes directly with the Corolla for this list, in my opinion. I don't know that both can exist on the same list. They're both icons of reliability and dependability, and their initial introduction marked the downfall of the western automotive industry and the rise of Asian marques. I had to go with the Civic for one reason - Aftermarket. All the great stuff about the Corolla also applies to the Civic, but the Civic is a car that anyone can turn into their own. It's a stereotype - The kid who got his first car, a Honda Civic, and thinks they're hot stuff - Well that stereotype exists for a reason - They lend themselves well to being changed and modified and turned into something completely new. Sure, it may not be the most tasteful at times, but for me the Civic ticks two major boxes - The modern, dependable people's car, and the car that can be anything. 5) Chevy Corvette (Specifically the C4) You covered the C4 well in the video, I don't have much else to add other than the C4 was the beginning of the US auto industry trying to pull out of the slump that was the 70s. If the Caravan is the right hand, the Corvette is the left, forming a one-two punch that brought us back to relevance. Further, with the C4, the Corvette became Everyone's Supercar. 4) Mazda Miata This is the big one. I don't know how the Miata didn't make the list. The Miata represents a revolutionary idea - That sports cars can be for everyone. Even today, for the price of a Toyota Corolla, you can enjoy one of the finest motoring experiences known to the common man. If the Corvette is Everyone's Supercar, the Miata is Everyone's Sports Car. But I think it's even more important than the Corvette because it is so much more attainable, it can reach so many more people. And it's not just about being cheap, it's about being cheap AND reliable AND having aftermarket parts available AND having a huge community around it AND having over 30 years of heritage AND being the last bastion of joy in the rather bleak automotive landscape. The Miata is likely responsible for getting more people "into" cars or "enjoying" driving than any other vehicle on this list. It doesn't just fulfill a role to its end users, the Miata fills a role to the automotive community at large. A meta-role. 3) Austin Mini You can't do a list about important and great cars without talking about the Mini. I don't know if it was the first car to use a transverse engine, but it was the first car to use a transverse engine and make it work in a usable package with mass appeal. If we can thank Audi for AWD everything, we can thank the Mini for some small part of nearly every unibody vehicle made today. The Mini was a packaging masterpiece and showed how much space you could really extract out of such a small footprint. 2) VW Beetle Nothing really to add here, cultural icon and revolutionized what a cheap car could be. Though I will note that I don't think the 911 can exist on the same list as the VW Beetle. The Beetle, and everything that spawned from it, includes the 911 itself. The 911 will only ever be less than the Beetle because the Beetle spawned the 911 and more, and the 911 certainly shouldn't get a spot above it. In my opinion, cars don't really work like people, the root is always greater than the branches. Unless it's not. But it usually is. Sort of. I think you can see my logic here. Hopefully. I love the 911 I promise I'm not just here to make an ass of myself. But it's gotta be the Beetle. 1) Ford Model T I think this pretty much has to be #1 due to all the reasons you listed. I don't have much else to add. Some honorable mentions that also include a lot from the video, in no particular order (I will gladly explain any one of these if asked): -Chrysler K platform -Ford Panther platform -Toyota Corolla -Lamborghini Countach -Ferrari F40 -AC Ace / AC Cobra / Shelby Cobra -Dodge Viper -BMW 2002 -Plymouth Prowler -1957 Chevy Bel Air -Ford Mustang -Chevy Camaro -Aston DB5 -Jaguar E-Type -AM General HMMWV (Specifically the Military version, not the civvie) -Willy's MB/Ford GPW -Mazda RX-7 -Subaru Outback -Citroen 2CV -Mercedes 300SD -Tesla Model S (Yes, really) -Toyota Prius (YES, REALLY) You should do a follow up video discussing some of the standouts from commenters that weren't talked about in this video. Would be super interesting to see what else people came up with.
