Self-diagnosis is the first step to diagnosis. You have to recognize that, "Hey! I have some of those..." and then you have to work on getting actually diagnosed. The difference between people on the first step of diagnosis and people who are just self-diagnosing is that people who self-diagnose will usually look at the google entry of the disorder and never seek a true diagnosis, or they will use the disorder to excuse their actions.

Fellow quiet pwBPD. I often wonder if the aggressive, highly manipulative people with the disorder are actually NPDs, or at least have it as a comorbidity with BPD. I find it strange that raging is in our diagnosis criteria but not narcs.

Janeane Marlow BPD people can have NPD, but not all of them have it. It really depends on childhood factors...also “quiet borderline” is also known as acting inward. Such as self harm or self hatred
@dagothur7898

@@phant0m0th_ yea its fairly common to see comorbidities, especially those in the same cluster group. What I mean is I think 'pure' BPD (I realize that sounds kinda daft, but bear with me) don't rage. I'm diagnosed BPD and the only criteria I don't meet is the raging. And the others with BPD I have met don't fit that either (assuming its the truth of course). I'd say most BPDs are quiet because of the self hatred. And the inappropriate displays of anger aren't the norm. But I understand the lines can get pretty blurred across diagnosis. Its just an opinion I have. I could be 100% incorrect.

I find the schizotypal personality disorder the most difficult to wrap my head around. At what point do strange beliefs become a disorder? Once they are compulsive? Many geniuses would then fall into that category.
@mateuszkarczewski9125
@mateuszkarczewski9125 5 жыл бұрын
The main issue is how hard for them is to cooperate and function within society. Just like with schizoids, it might not be an issue for them, given they have skills and tools to achieve their ideal life alone, just like WW. When they need to contact the outside world, they are in need to translate their visions and make people believe in them enough to help. This might be a tall order at times, given that most of people are not exccentric, so the statistics are often against them. Not being able to do that results in being unfullfilled and alienated

"An enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual's culture." Ok let's unwrap this. You have people in our culture who believe in so-called strange things. This could be aliens, lizard people, UFOs, you name it. Add to this a cultural phenomenon wherein we worship entertainment and we have a whole industry dedicated to making outlandish stories seem plausible. Add to this the fact that strange phenomena exist in our world. Some are witness to it and others never have the privilege. Then there is the fact that we have increasingly intricate technologies that can fool the senses. So we are left with people who feel they are trying to tell everyone something extremely important, and those people will always feel gaslighted by people who have none of these experiences, or if they do, they manage to explain them away. It causes chaos. Compound that with any narcissistic venture that would profit from said beliefs or said chaos. Compound it again with people who have organic disorders, namely schizophrenia, who might physically see something that someone concurrently in their presence might not sense at all. What about ESP? Have you ever had a moment of premonition, or thought of someone as they called, or had a feeling about something that ended up coming true? Some people might think you are crazy for thinking that could possibly be the case. To them, everything is extremely cut and dried. Maybe they have NPD or BPD. Maybe neurotypical people are undesirable because they can't be controlled. There I go with my strange beliefs. Happy accident. Am I crazy? Disordered? Maybe it's in the eye of the beholder.

BPD is usually misinterpreted. This video is another classic case of that. It’s has a lot to do with problems of emotional regulation and your self identity, not so much aggressiveness or risky behavior but the emotional experience is what fuels things like that, so not everyone with it will have those traits.

As someone diagnosed with BPD, it’s more than just mood swings. you constantly overthink, always assume people are judging you, you jump to conclusions waaay to fast, if someone’s tone SLIGHTLY changes it makes you switch moods instantly but once you know they’re fine you feel immense guilt and go back to laughing it off. I’ll have guilt for the rest of my life for the way I’ve always treated my parents. I throw meltdowns nearly daily over the tiniest of tiny things, my dads even given me the nickname “5 year old” because I whine and act like a toddler who couldn’t get a toy over very small things. It’s hard to keep relationships because you lack trust in everyone, and once you find someone you get codependent and obsessed with them but once you’re finally with them you second guess yourself and try to gaslight yourself into thinking you don’t have feelings for them. everyone thinks you’re entitled and or lazy, and everyone just assumes you’re a bad person or a Karen. STOP WANTING THIS SHIT ITS NOT CUTE

this unfortunately is just the tip of the iceberg. I know I’m a decent human, but the BPD makes me think otherwise. I’ve done and said things no human in their right mind would even think about saying. I don’t mean the words, but when I’m in rage mode anything goes. I hope I can forgive myself and I hope our creator can forgive me. I don’t know who’s watching but I hope they know I wanna work on myself

I was diagnosed with MDD last year but the past week I’ve been looking into Bipolar 2 and BPD. Originally (so like at the beginning of the week) I thought I had Bipolar 2, but now I’m suspecting it is BPD, specifically because my hypomanic and depressed episodes fluctuate throughout the day. But the putoff for suspecting I’ve got BPD is that I’m 14, even though you can… have it prior to adulthood.. I would also like to describe my symptoms as internalised (so quiet Bipolar or, quiet BPD like another commenter mentioned). People may perceive me as perfectly fine on the outside but on the inside I’m actually really paranoid, anxious, sad, etc. Some examples would be: ~ the constant paranoia my friends are annoyed with me presence sitting with them so I isolate myself and one of them has always gotta invite me to sit with them and that they don’t genuinely consider me their friends because I never engage in socialising within the group. ~ the longer my friends do not reply to my texts, the more paranoid I’ll get they think I’m bugging them again. I’ll sometimes then send an apology text for annoying them/being a bad person (bc of that paranoia), and they’ll often reply in a matter of minutes or hours saying I’m all good, I didn’t do anything wrong they don’t hate me, etc.

@@anonymmous ah you sound just like 14 year old me. I was diagnosed with DMDD, then with petulant BPD once I turned 18 since DMDD is normally for minors and my parents brainwashed the last psychiatrist so once I turned 18 and got my own I could tell her the whole hearted truth and she properly diagnosed me. It’ll get better once you get clarity and medication(: Its still a constant struggle bc of the 247 paranoia and self hate but I’m working on it slowly but surely. I know your pain and I promise it’ll get better SLOWLY but it’ll be half as bad once you get older, you get better at managing the thoughts and feelings once you realize it’s 99% in your head half the time. Just remember: nobody is out to get you and it’s mostly in your head. That’s what I wish I knew when I was your age.

Hey, diagnosed Schizoid here. I just want to give my two cents. For one, thank you for not just flat out saying we're totally incapable of having friends or meaningful relationships. People often act like we're not able to form any kind of bond, when we are. I, for example, have a nice romantic relationship and friends who I'd fight for. It's just that I don't feel motivated to make new friends and I simply don't attach to a vast majority of people who talk to me. I don't generally want to go make friends with people, and I spend a lot of my time alone, which I'm content with. A lot of our behavior stems from our emotional detachment. The disorder as a whole is largely based in apathy and being emotionally detached. Now, as for my experience, I don't really feel a "need" to treat my SPD. It's as you said in the video, I'm honestly fine with myself the way I am. It does hamper some of my abilities to understand other people, but overall I don't mind it. My SPD was most likely caused by severe parental abuse (verbal and physical) I went through during some of my childhood and throughout my teens, as I can trace a lot of my Schizoid-related tendencies back to it. For example, I was punished for showing emotion, so I learned to not show it, and over time it lead to me simply not feeling it as one normally would. I almost always feel like an outsider looking in when it comes to society, as though there's a thick glass wall between me and them. A glass wall through which I can see and hear them, but simply can't get close or make contact. There are a number of other traits we exhibit which you didn't mention (understandably so since this is kind of a rapid-fire video), but you got the main point of what SPD is across well, and I appreciate your unbiased yet empathetic outlook on all of these disorders. A lot of people are quick to jump to conclusions that are incorrect. .. Not sure that a 50 Shades of Gray character is the best thing to compare us to though, haha. Honestly, I think comparing fictional characters to personality disorders as a whole isn't a very good idea, since it can give people false pretenses about these disorders.

I have an opposing view on Cinderella being the example for dependent personality disorder. She’s actually quite independent and resourceful. Despite being abused and mistreated for years by her step family, she developed many healthy coping mechanisms to escape that hardship and made her own decisions to escape her household where she was basically enslaved. She simply hoped for freedom and grew as a person despite living in a toxic environment. It is true that she does depend on her animal friends, but that does not mean that she is not capable of doing thjngs on her own, as she does everything she can to survive in the hands of her abusive family. She is a survivor that used her resources and created a support group full of those that could help her and she ultimately fought against her family to live her own life.

I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. From my experience it really works excellently! It doesnt even need to be a full hit. With potent shrooms 2-3 small ones will still make a clear difference. It will be a few hour cosy rumbling moment around rest time, but afterwards its just calm and you feel amazing and gain your freedom. Psilocybin is different dudes, its the only "treatment" I would recommend to someone who genuinely wants to get better. There is no addiction, withdrawal, or negative side effects. It's just pure healing., far more effective than any anti-depressant. You can thank me later

@yung-megafone that's just not true. It's about incentive to change. People in general are notoriously disinclined to welcome change. Those that do, do it for ultimately selfish reasons, like improving on your own life, sadness, trauma etc. We are talking about changing a personalty style. Well these personalities are predatorial in nature, and that works for them. It is definitely waaay easier to just continue rather than face the fact that you're essentially not a good human, regardless of the reasons why. I do have compassion for the trauma, but that's not even always the case (some narcisists were smothered with love, for example). Point of it is, my trauma was imposed on me but its my job to change that. Antisocial personalities lack the incentive and they are very, very often, oblivious at their own condition. Truly, not everything can be changed. And it's not our job to do it or put ourselves in the path of danger, and this is speaking as a former people pleaser who really, really likes humans in general and thinks we are frail, breakable and deserving of kindness. So were I to choose if I show kindness to myself of someone on the Spektrum, I will show them up until some point, then I won't anymore. I will show kindness to myself rather, because I matter, too. And I haven't been predatorial, so I deserve it more.

It's scary how well the section of the video describing Avoidant Personality Disorder felt relatable to me. for the past few months of highschool I've been nearly 24/7 obsessively thinking about my friends and how I'd want them to appreciate me and shower me with their attention,,, but instead of doing anything and deepening my bond with them I've felt paralyzed by fear of how they might react, or that they don't talk to me now because they get along with each other so well and just see me as a weirdo outsider now who stopped talking to them, even though they still hang around. and observe them talk. Doing anything about this feels so hard and I feel paralyzed, like joining in on their conversations is the most dreadful task and i am simply too awkward to talk to ::_:: I'm already talking to a therapist about this and my other issues, but i still can't muster up any courage for change; don't mind me venting here a little bit, and also thank you for reading til the end

I think I have a bit of avoidant personality too, coupled with introversion. I feel anxious around people who are my friends and I don’t feel comfortable in conversations. I see others as having a better sense of humor and telling more interesting stories. I’ve tried reading books on increasing my sense of humor, storytelling, conversation starters, and conversational style and flow. I’ve watched KZbins on verbal communication and having quicker thought processes/speech responses to be a better communicator. Honestly, it has helped me to a small degree, but I still overthink and over analyze the way others perceive me. I think that makes me appear less confident, which is also less appealing to others. It’s exhausting and makes me want to stay home in my safe space.

Or poison myself in order to not meet up with someone i didnt like but was too scared to tell them. If im not given a specific checklist of things to do, i get upset and anxious and even if i have a list i need coworkers to assure me that im doing the tasks correctly. I work at mcd and even though im shy, working at the counter is my favorite position because all i need to do is listen to what the customer wants, and then push some buttons. Its important to me that im told what to do and given instructions, but also constantly reminded of them. Along side this i have anxiety about bothering people and my need for instruction combats my need to not be a burden. All this coupled with the fact i have anxiety about being away from my mom and my home makes working difficult and i kind of wish i could explain this to others so that they understand. The colleague asked John: "How could you; a Nobel Prize-winning mathematician of the highest caliber, believe that _aliens_ were sending you signals in magazines??!!?" Generally good definitions, but your explanation of Borderline personality disorder was somewhat lacking. It's mainly characterized by an unstable sense of self and unstable interpersonal relationships. This can manifest in sufferers changing their appearance, jobs, hobbies, and beliefs seemingly out of nowhere. In their relationships, they go through periods of intense overvaluing of their partner followed by intense periods of devaluing them. People with BPD greatly suffer from an inner turmoil due to their unstable sense of self that can manifest in behaviors that harm themselves and, often inadvertently, others. Unfortunately, self-harm and suicide are more common with BPD though many people who have it can learn to live happy and healthy lives through things like DBT

I was brought up as an only child with a alcoholic and emotionally abusive and neglectful single mother. I was always anxious and withdrawn as a child, and I suspect I've been asexual since I was at least 13. I've always had a deep and rich imagination and love to read and write creatively. I don't think I can connect emotionally with other people and I just don't understand family or romantic relationships. I'm 30 this year and child free and always had a weird aversion to sex. I can joke about it sometimes but the thought of actually doing it grosses me out so I never bothered. What some perceive as a personality disorder is often survival tactics to keep people away from them. After all, one is impossible to be emotionally abused if they keep others away from them. Self protection should always be a priority over ridiculous social interactions and connections. Being social accomplishes little, in life. But protecting yourself accomplishes a lot. It is time to stop overstating that being social is so important. It really is not. As for talk therapy, it only makes some people miserable. I know I will never return to a mental therapist again. It is a horrible experience that accomplished nothing.

@@ninamc6116 I guess therapy works for people that are highly social. That just happens to not be me. Working physically as hard as possible seems to have a very therapeutic effect on my mind. Thus, I am constantly building things, repairing things, and modifying things. The harder the work, the better for my mind. I do not work out. All that effort benefits the body and mind but accomishes no third benefit. The hard work I do on my property has accomplished am incredible amount on my property and I do it alone. No evil talk therapist required.

I greatly appreciate a video explaining how ASPD is a spectrum and not all of us with this diagnosis is a horrible evil person at heart. Most videos I see say that. And most people who find out I’m diagnosed go from being a close to friend to “what do you want out of me. It’s impossible for people like you to have friends”. After going in and out of therapy for a couple years both of my will and not. I found that I’m not a terrible person and I don’t have to act like the monster people think I am. Because who cares if they’ll never see me anything else. I know me and I do have a few close friends which is better than a ton of shitty people I have to become an actor around. For me my problems came about due to adoption trauma and “learning from infancy that the only way to get what you need to survive you have to act out, manipulate, and steal” and “connections and emotions are dangerous because everyone is just going to hurt or leave you eventually”. It’s not easy to unlearn stuff like that. It’s not even a conscious process but something instinctual that I didn’t even know I did until my third therapist.

Oh, it's good to hear about NPD, as someone who's diagnosed with it I can say that I kinda hate it but I don't wanna change it at the same time. It's hard to live knowing that I am a narcissist while I don't to be 1 of them. But I started to dealing with it and I just started to ignore *everything* so now I'm not putting anyone in the 1st place. But I still trynna to fight my desire of being a World Leader who can control every president/king/queen or whatever they have from every single country. Being a conscious narcissist is very hard to live like a "normal person"

Precision Diagnosis regarding Donald Trump. The NPD is best diagnosed by observation of individual in public, social, work, and/or personal interactions. Harvard and Yale both diagnosed his NPD - He also has characteristics of some other PD's, which can be common among NPD's. This has zero yo do with a Political Party - NPD's are not team players anyway. It is all about them - period. He is an Overt NPD.

Unfortunately, personality disorders typically are ‘rigid’ forms of behavior that are resistant to change. As a retired therapist, I have experienced that they can be difficult to treat with talk therapy. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). has shown good response for borderline personality disorders, but it requires a great amount of desire to change on the client’s part as it is a long, arduous group therapy process. However, if a person with a PD is motivated to change, they should absolutely get therapy!

OCPD and Hermione Granger- No. Hermione is simply a very clever person who has in her head a lot of information that is useful to others. She can be bossy, but she isn't manipulative. For a person to be considered as having a "personality disorder", then the characteristics which are affecting them ust impact really negatively on their life. Hermione's intelligence and skills DO NOT impact negatively on her on her friends, after the boy's initial gripe caused mainly by the fact that she is both intelligent and bossy. Hermione very quickly matures into a tolerable "clever person". The person in the Harry Potter series wh is an ABSOLUTELY PERFECT EXAMPLE of a OCPD is Dolores Umbridge. Dolores sees herself as the absolutely perfect employee of the Ministry of Magic, and the Minister for Magic in particular. What Umbridge likes to do, above all things, is enforce correctness upon other people. To this end, she sets rules which impose impossible burdens on the children, so that she can have the pleasure of correcting their errors. She continually finds situations in which she can enforce some arbitrary rule. In the movie, the measuring of Professor Flitwick, it is sign of how this rule-making can be pushed to a ridiculous extent. While on this track, Gilderoy Lockart is absolutely typical of the overt Narcissist. He is a highly incompetent wizard, hiding behind a screen of self-agrandisement, and not at all mbarrassed about taking upon himself the glory that rightly belongs to others.

@MandyJMaddison 5 жыл бұрын
Alexis Ermis, No. Dolores was not Narcissistic. Compare her behaviour to that of Gilderoy Lochart, the typical Narcissist She was not a "self-promoter", she was a Sergeant Major. She loved the power of control, and enforcing, but it worked for her when there was always a senior person to whom she could pass the buck. She was an absolute control freak. It is Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. Don't muddle it up with "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder" which causes people to overdo ordinary daily things (like checking that they have locked the door). It is unfortunate that the two conditions have such similar names, but very different affects. Obsssive Compulsive Personality Disorder can be a very serious condition because, like full-on Nacissistic Personality Disorder, or Antisocial Personality Disorder, it can profoundly affect the people around you. Like Narcissistic Personality Disorder, it is outwardly directed. The OCPD cannot function without other people who they can control and bully.
@MandyJMaddison
@MandyJMaddison 4 жыл бұрын
Em em, You ask me not to "stigmatise" OCPD. The point is that if the person is not SERIOUSLY affected by the problem then it is not a "Personality Disorder". They merely have certain personal characteristics. Hermione Granger, for example, is right on task and is a high achiever. Dolores has all the characteristics of a serious personality disorder. And it is indeed disabling, because it affects all her relationships. People like Dolores are rarely happy, even when they are feeling an enormous sense of achievement at having crushed the rebellious spirit of some poor underling

Everyone on the planet will have at least one trait from one list of Personality disorders, usual more. For a diagnosis you have to fulfill a certain number of these traits, and have them be pervasive over your adult life time. Sure, maybe you have rampant fantasies all the time (for example), but if thats the only thing you are doing, its not a sign of schizotypal PD. Or say you 'split' on a regular basis. Doesn't mean you're borderline.

I’ve read somewhere that people can’t have both the diagnosis of autism and the diagnosis of schizoid personality disorder. But to be brutally honest, I don’t know just how true that is, because I was recently professionally diagnosed with autism, and my parents and I are speculating that I could possibly have schizoid personality disorder as well. But if it’s true that someone can’t have both autism and schizoid personality disorder, then my parents and I would have to figure out what else is really going on for me. I also have ADHD, cerebral palsy, anxiety, and depression. The cerebral palsy has been caused by a brain injury that I had before I was born. Also people really need to understand that self diagnosis isn’t a good idea in general because it’s very problematic in the long run, especially for people who have been given a professional diagnosis of these disorders.

Yeah that’s very possible. Also could be some form of psychosis or schizophrenia depending on how strong her beliefs are and whether or not they border on delusions or are full fledged delusions. Is she aware that what she’s saying sounds “crazy” or that she could have a mental disorder? Or is she not self aware of that. I’ve heard that can be a big difference between schizotypal and psychosis. I’m definitely not a doctor though and this is also a year after you said this so idk how much that can help.
