I've only spent two days on the AT for a little hiking trip and I have to say it was so foggy and magical! Definitely my favorite part. Downside, it was also super rainy and we were soaked the whole time lol. I look forward to hiking the entire AT at some point in the next couple years!

Wonderful reflective followup about your AT experience and love the fact that Evan was such a meaningful part of the journey that you, Luke and Yelp shared together. I had wondered about how thru hikers felt about some of the gas station/convenience store food that they would gladly devour on the trail and now that they have finished their thru hike if they had any desire to partake of those same foods. You expressed your thoughts on that quite well. Thank you. I've never been a fan of Hot Pockets or Spam but when on the trail one might have to develop a taste just to add variety to the diet.

I just got back from a 10 day camping/jeeping trip and so many of the things you said in this align with my own views! I have never done anything as extensive as the AT of course but being in the woods for any period of time lets you slip into a more primitive way of thinking for sure. I love shutting off from society and getting off social media... i love wearing the same clothes over and over and not worrying about it and most of all i love gloomy foggy days in the woods because it makes you feel even more isolated... my only regret as of recently was figuring out the do's and dont's of my hair while being in a dirty environment lol..... live and learn right, that last mud hole did me in... luckily it was right before i left to come home. its always awesome to hear your perspective on the AT and outdoors in general, it was really fun getting to talk about it in person! Your passion really shows when you talk about it, love it.

Liz Kidder : What were your favorite trail magic items? A cold fizzy soda? fresh fruit? hot pizza? all-day breakfast tacos? donuts? bratwurst? hamburgers? What is the most awesome thing you could get at a trail magic place? I was thinking it would be awesome to freeze cheap lightweight bottles of water - the really thin ones - so hikers could have ice water for an hour or two in the summer. It would take some time to thaw out and they could add their water to the chunk of ice that's left. I would bet fresh fruit and hot greasy food would be good. And I suppose tofu and couscous. And a big jug of olive oil so the Evan-types can refill their containers. You should get donations and take all of this stuff and stay out there until it's all gone. Evan should join you! He needs an excuse to get on the trail a little and sketch. He mentioned something about that recently. I've never done trail magic or a through hike, but they're both something I would love to do - when it's not raining. Be sure to bring bear spray when you sit on the side of the trail all day with delicious food. Or some trekking poles to bang together - I heard that works too 😁
@LizKidder5 жыл бұрын
Definitely donuts and fresh fruit are amazing for trail magic!!! (personal opinion). You can’t go wrong with soda and hot greasy food either!!! Ice waters are a great idea!! I hope to do some trail magic this year for sure! You should get out there too!!

Liz Kidder : I'm in Texas, so it's a little far for me. I definitely want to do a big though-hike sometime. Or at least the Colorado section of the CDT. I used to live in Colorado and that place is heaven to me. I have all the gear I need to do a through-hike. I just need to get off my ass and make it happen! The AT would be perfect for me because I hammock camp and it looks like there's no shortage of trees there. Your hiking videos definitely are inspiring! I've been KZbin following Second Chance on the PCT this year. That dude is awesome. If you haven't checked him out, then do. It'll make you want to do the PCT. If you haven't heard about him he started the hike 200 lbs overweight. His videos aren't the typical hiker vlog style either.

I don't miss the rain on the AT, I started on April 12th, 2015 and it rained every day for the next ten days. Then i slipped 20 feet from the Roan Mountain shelter in a down pour rushing to get in the shelter and cracked 3 ribs on a tree root so i diffidently don't miss the rain. I do miss meeting fellow hikers and hearing there stories and wish I had taken more pictures. 37 out of 40 is awesome what will be your next adventure Liz? Capt, America

I would think the number one thing you don't miss is editing the videos every day. I remember you didn't look forward to that at all. But bugs, rain, and the sheer inconvenience of having to walk everywhere are the three biggies. What I miss most is not having to go to work every day and the feeling that you're doing something worthwhile. Life has a simple uncomplicated meaning on the trail. Walk sleep, repeat. We do miss your beautiful face every day, that was something to look forward to. Happy trails.

Like start earlier or later in the season? I started first week of April and I would 100% ABSOLUTELY do that again. The earlier you go, the more snow and cold you’ll have to endure. I would’ve started later if I was crazy and hiking it in like >4months. Or earlier/later in the day? I’m a morning person, 6am start time was perfect for me!
