I work for a small estate sale company. This is real. Lots of folks, at some point, loose control of their house. Either through age, divorce, spouse’s death or stress. Some folks just have the “home shopping network” illness. We have family members say that have tried to help, but are unsuccessful. Saying goodbye to things is really hard for a lot of people. Overconsumption of cookware, fancy serving ware, purses, shoes, makeup, towels and linen, cheap tools, and well intentioned cleaning products are big culprits.

One of my favourite things about a vacation is staying at a hotel. I love it for all the reasons you stated. Years ago I didn’t realize why but now I see that I just love the minimal feel of it. I love that I only have so many clothes, belongings, etc. There is minimal decor and everything that is there has a purpose. There is no over abundance of anything. As I’ve gotten older I understand that one of the biggest sources of my anxiety is all of the visual clutter. Sometimes I can’t sleep at night because all I’m thinking about is what I need to do in my home to feel better. It’s a journey I’ve begun and although it’s moving slow because of my poor health I still am going in the right direction.🥰

You can do it! One small area at a time! Something I've learned is to take a "before" picture of whatever area (drawer, closet, table top, cabinet, etc) you decide to tackle, then take an "after" picture. Looking at the pictures when you're done is such a wonderful feeling of accomplishment! You don't realize what a huge step you've taken until you compare the pictures, and it motivates me to start on the next area.

More time to sit and Read to the kids I occupied my mind for the last three years accumulating dollar tree stuff to make into more stuff that I didn’t want in my house then what. Lol. When I started to declutter, I jumped right in! Then I replaced half of the stuff. I then decided to make better decisions. I knew what was no longer of value, anything I was unsure of I put in a box. If I took it out in a reasonable amount of time I kept it, if I didn’t even look for it, I taped the box and dropped it off at the reuse. Another method I found helpful was to put little sticky dots on things. I wrote the date I put them on, then made my decision based on time.

Robyn, you are so right, even though I have been on the minimalist journey for years, there are still times when things get out of hand. I cannot function in chaos. I am stifled. Until things are back in order, put away, I can finally feel myself again. My worst times are changing Christmas decor, changing seasonal clothes, or in progress projects. I don’t have kids or toys but am in my 60’s and have general accumulation. A few years ago I made a goal to get rid of one thing a day. I even kept a log of what it was on what date. If I happened on 5 things in one day that counted for 5 days. I can get overwhelmed easily so this trick only took a few minutes each day, plus writing it down and seeing my progress gave a tangible sense of accomplishment. At that time it was things to donate or throw out. I’m at a point where I have unneeded things of more value, so I’m putting them in a place for a future tag sale. In retirement I plan to start reselling things of greater value online.

My problem where I live it’s not my clutter. The other person doesn’t even care or notice any chaos. So I can’t get a handle on my own life. Spending time doing the basics when I have the energy. Just to keep some level on hygiene.Walked out once went back. Nothing changed. Feels like life is slipping away, the older I get. Health of all is already getting more impacted lately.Hard to get out of bed to face it all. Harder to get out lots of days as well.

Thank I have been working on declutering, and organizing. I don't believe that I have so much stuff, I don't have an atic, a basement, storage area, no office, and no garage. we are a family of 4 in a small apartment with 2 bedrooms 1. bathroom. So everything we have has to stay here. If I have any minimal decisions, have no were to store. Yes, I have ever thing you listed. My family and my health is very important. Yes, I have many crazy mental reasons for my clutter (which like I said 😢claims I don't have.) I have hoarder thing that make me feel happy, in control, of what happens at least to my stuff, my junk, because I have no control over my declining health. Because I truly trust you , one of My KZbin Best Friends ,I will continue to Try to decluter in small steps. You, Miss Horder, Case, and a few other are helping me. One which will remain name less is putting fire on my feet, she has helped me the most, my spiritual daughter❣️

One thing is stop blaming yourself for everything. Part of the clutter is also the family not helping in the house, but expecting you to do it all. Which is not fair. Leaving messes in places you just cleaned out, being reckless and thoughtless and all these little wars they start fight with you constantly. It's not all the women that must be accused.

I really appreciate the way you presented all the mental health facts. I find that very helpful. I may be able to focus on that to help me keep the clutter down as I find the 'Hotel Analogy' gives me anxiety. I absolutely can't stand hotels. Lol. They are impersonal, cold and bare and I actually feel completely trapped in them.

Minimalist here except a lot of artwork on the walls...not excessively. Some minimalist I saw have no artwork or just one piece of artwork. I also have a few antiques on display such as a 1930 Royal typewriter and a 1960 rotary phone. I take joy seeing these items and don't mind the time to dust these items. I added cushions and throw blankets because before just was not cozy. People come in and think I am super clean and neat...but a neat home makes me feel at peace. Easier to keep clean and neat as an empty nester..and downsized, too. I consider cleaning a form of exercise....lol...but super fast in a 750 sf co op now.

I might suggest A Hoarder’s Heart! Whether you have hoarding disorder or not, it sounds like you have some of the same emotional attachment to stuff that makes it hard to even consider decluttering. Her approach is very positive and empathetic, and she keeps things until it feels okay to let go instead of forcing things she “should” get rid of.

Excellent video, new subscriber. Looking forward to binge watching. Thx! I'm afraid to tell my pulmonologist how much clutter and years of dust I live in 😬 (don't ask, don't tell). She did run an allergen panel and it was positive for grasses and a couple trees but dust/dust mites were not included in the test. I have been diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans (rare) and have a followup CT scan next month for a solid right upper lobe lung nodule. I'm on supplemental oxygen at night. So I guess decluttering and cleaning my apartment should be a no-brainer. But it's a vicious cycle when you're old, with a lot of medical problems, including ADHD, and live alone . . .

Quite honestly, I have never been in ahotel room and sighed in relief because it wasn't cluttered. I also took a psych test and I test as only 4% for neuroticism. I want to declutter because #1. I have trouble finding things when I need them; #2. I like the way my home looks when it isn't cluttered; #3. constant clutter makes my home less useable. #4. We're making repairs to the house and the clutter is in the way.

I’m with you on that. My parents passed in 2016 and 2020. I live in the family home, alone with a lifetime of their stuff (mixed with my stuff) I’ve decluttered a few bits that weren’t sentimental like an old dvd recorder but it’s all so hard. I think the way to tackle it is to imagine if there was a house fire, which things would we save? Maybe the things that we cherish will become clearer. Sentiment is our nemesis I’m afraid ☹️

@@MoonSpinners For a time, I needed all their things around. Now, I’m dedicating a room to them. I realized I didn’t even know what *my* style/vibe was - beside grief, angst and longing. So now I can go through the items in that room and make peace, gradually. I put a small carved wooden pelican of my dad’s in the gymnastics area if my local YMCA where I volunteer. It makes me smile. I intend to place several things around town and keep. I like your fire idea!

@@2CheekyRabbits ..oh, that’s a great idea, a room dedicated to them, you can go in and wallow when you’re having one of those days. I think your dad would laugh if he knew his pelican was in the gym area, I didn’t know him, but I think he’d have loved that.

When i get injured/suffer some pain/for whatever other reason i need to ask someone to bring something to me or instruct them where it is it is SOOOO MUCH EASIER now just to tell them bring me that box in that drawer or whatever than to endure family members turnning my stuff upside down and going through my personal stuff ....
