I am proud to have been a crewmember of the original USS Basilone, DD-824, 1971 - late 1973. Was onboard for her circumnavigation cruise in 1972, and her illfated Midshipman's cruise in Feb 73. An excellent ship and crew. My maternal uncle was on the same transport to Iwo, as John Basilone, and bunked one tier away from Basilone's tier.

After his service he became a editor at sports illustrated and would work with them from the 70's to the early 00's.

The LCS ships are too small and not enough firepower for operations against a modern navy. The Arleigh Burke class destroyer and the Virginia class attack subs are the backbone of the Navy, and would carry the weight in a major war. Could use a few more Frigates too, and a couple more amphibious ships too (to replace the one that burned up).

Thank goodness your not in charge of Naval planning. You can't see past "Bigger ships, bigger guns!". The Germans thought that way too. Big bad battleships that got sunk by tiny little ships and planes, and giant guns that were very fun for our commandos to destroy. LCS ships are the answer to pat war logistical issues. It's better for us to have a thousand small ships backing our Carriers than it is to have a hundred battle ships or destroyers. You're not thinking about price, building logistics, and crews. Good day.

I find it difficult to understand why the US Navy is building so many "Littoral Combat Ship" vessels. The Littoral Combat Ship appears to be designed where medium endurance US Coast Guard cutters roam. Why did the US Navy and US Coast Guard not join forces and develop a vessel both services could employ? The Coast Guard's Reliance class cutters are over 50 years old and the Famous class cutters are from the 1980's. Now the Coast Guard have gone their own way and developing their new medium class cutters that are nearly as large as the former high endurance Hamilton class cutters.
@genxtech5584 Жыл бұрын
The Navy was looking forward to the standoff war with China. The LCS ships are designed for operating in area's like the Taiwan straight and in/around the Philippines. Allies of America at the time the LCS ships were being designed and built. The idea was that a shallow draft stealthy ship would have more maneuverability and higher survival rate in and around this theater of operation.
@sequoiasemperviren3163 Жыл бұрын
@@genxtech5584 If so, then why do their sea trials involve sea state 6? Three or four of the earliest vessels have been decommissioned due to structural cracks in the bulkheads due to their high speeds in severe sea states. I find it doubtful such sea states exist in the Sea of Japan or China Sea.
@genxtech5584 Жыл бұрын
@@sequoiasemperviren3163 Dude don't take my word for it. The entire history of the LCS program is declassified and online to read about. I didn't say they were a huge success or the best ship ever mate. They suffer the same problem as the Ford class. To many technology changes in one platform leading to long commission times, and in case of their gun systems entirely useless systems. You can see the Navy is now switching tracks and starting frigate purchases again since like the last was decommissioned in 14 or so.
@sequoiasemperviren3163 Жыл бұрын
@@genxtech5584 I was just asking a rhetorical question. Don't get so estrogen-charged hysterical. I am knowledgeable of the conditions sea trials were conducted. Such sea state conditions would never be experienced in the oceans surrounding China. My major point was the US Navy and US Coast Guard should have produced a common vessel platform since the Coast Guard is absorbed by the Navy during times of war.

Recent Navy shipbuilding programs have been disasters. One failure is the Zumwalt program. The Navy built 3 Zumwalt class guided missile destroyers, but canceled more production when they had failing propulsion systems and their planned guns that were canceled, making them ships that had to be towed anywhere and had no guns. Guns were to be replaced with hypersonic missiles. Cost to build 3 non working ships was $25 Billion. To fill the void, Navy ordered more Arleigh Burke class ships. Another failure was the littoral combat ship program. The Navy planned two different classes of littoral combat ships, and built several of each class but canceled both programs in the face of unrepairable propulsion system failures and hull cracking problems. They commissioned many for service but realized they did not work and could not be economically fixed. New builds were canceled and the existing ones became test vehicles. To fill the need for guided missile frigates, the Navy licensed a working Italian design.

I can't do 'social media' or 'free to air' TV anymore. There's nothing out there but hate, stupidity and, by the way, the first full-on war in Europe since the end of WW2! I hope A.I. does get better but not too good because those A.I. critters may reach a point where they reckon humans just aren't worth the bother anymore and decide to do away with us. On one level, I find myself agreeing with who or whatever they may become.😉 All the best, mate. We all have to do whatever we can to get through these insane times. Cheers, Bill H.

@@BillHalliwellsadly i think the hatred and ignorance we see is intentional, meant to dumb us down as im sure you have noticed in your life the change.. as for A.I. I'd have to agree with you on that also.. all tools that are being used to suppress people like you who are not afraid to speak their mind about this stuff. Worst part is most people aren't even aware of it it has gotten so bad.. I'll try to be nice to the robots for our sake ha. stay safe brother, cheers!
