Fun fact: Look at the ingredients list for the original Szechuan sauce from 1998 and the re-release that cost someone their life. They're not even the same sauce. People were scalping, attacking, and even going as far as to stab one another...and it wasn't even the same sauce!

The most surprising fact about the KFC double-down that came out when it was available was that compared to other fast food it actually wasn't that high in fat or calories.
@MegaZeta

Yeah, because (1) all the comparable items were ALSO a grotesque amount of fat and calories, and (2) the Double Down was ~95% of that combined with enough sodium that it probably qualified as a murder weapon if given to those at risk of a heart attack.

Just wanted to add the KFC is the mad lad of fast food. When people in America voiced their concerns with how unhealthy fast food really was, restaurants took action by introducing healthier menu items or removing terrible options, like McDonald's removing the super size option. In 1996 McDonald's introduced a short-lived burger called the Arch Deluxe, which was marketed as a burger for adults. It had a special white sauce on it. Mini McPizzas are a secret menu item in some places, since all the stuff except the sauce is readily available. It depends on if someone there knows how to make it. About 15 years ago when I worked there my manager showed me how to make them. The crust is just the biscuit dough, shredded cheese is on hand, and so is steak, chicken, ham, and bacon. The sauce is the tricky part, I recommend BBQ sauce and a bit of ketchup. You bake it in the toaster ovens for a few minutes.

I can give you the lowdown on the McSalad Shakers: They were designed for you to shake before eating; so you can distribute the salad dressing as you're shaking. Before the McSalad Shakers, the salad came in a plastic container. I remember when McDonald's had been selling them for some customers to "eat healthy to follow the McDonald's diet" . As if it would sell a lot of them for many McDonald's customers to eat healthy. At any fast-food place. Compared to what's exactly IN them.....of what McDonald's do always serve. I should know. I USED to ❤ McDonald's. Especially their 🍟. You just can't beat their wonderful potatoes. I've eaten many fast food fries from Five Guys, Wendy's, Whataburger,and Dairy Queen. Only Whataburger can rival them. All others cannot even compete with them. And as far as KFC is concerned, it's the skin that gives it flavor. Original or crispy. Those were the days. Unfortunately it had backfired, because of all the plastic it McDonald's were also producing......and throwing them away in the trash. Instant of recycling them. It has been costing McDonald's money. So they discontinued it.

I’m pretty sure the exact opposite has happened over the last decade or so. Sure, they canceled the salad shaker but also eventually added like 5 or 6 full-on salad meals. I’m pretty sure the majority of fast-food restaurants have added a number of “healthy” menu items. The rise of fast-casual restaurants, like Chipotle or Panera, was heavily influenced by a societal shift towards healthier eating. Even KFC, who hilariously introduced a sandwich that substituted bread for donuts, added grilled chicken to their menu.

I've watched a bunch of KZbin videos of McDonald's in other countries and people shake their salads in whatever container they come in. I don't know if the dressing is as evenly distributed that way, but you definitely don't need a cup or jar to shake your salad. It does make eating on the go much easier though so I like your idea.

I remember those salad shakers. You put your salad dressing on top, put the lid on to shake it, and the theory was the dressing would coat your salad evenly. In reality, the top few dressing-soaked leaves adhered themselves to the lid and the rest of the salad was left dry. After you made that mistake with the first one, you just added it bit by bit as you ate your way down. It was a salad made inconvenient.

As a McDonald's worker myself, it's really cool to look back at some weird fast food history. I love me some fast food, but some of these are definitely overkill. I already don't eat hot dogs nearly as much as I used to because of how bad they are for you. Just give me some nuggets with ranch and I'll be a happy camper. Hey, another thing, I can confirm that pizza being too long to make is a valid reason for being discontinued. We take our times kinda seriously. We often dislike people who take forever to order food because it jacks up our times. Alright y'all I want the mcrib to die already. @@chiarosuburekeni9325 True - the Whooper actually has a few more calories and less protein than a Double Down. I think people see the the fried chicken with bacon and knee jerk while thinking the burger has to be better when it really isn't. They're both rather terrible options. Burgers tend to be deceptive - the buns are often at least 200 calories, then all the sauces on them adds at least a hundred if not way more. The meat has saturated fat and the vegetables are typically non-existent or empty. I mean, it kills me that Wendy's threw a fit over the T-Rex but still sells a triple patty bacon cheese burger or people whined about the Double Down when KFC is all about fried chicken in general... If you thought that burger was huge, What-A-Burger had burgers bigger then your hands and they were so good that I couldn't have finished them in 1 sitting. I still get stuffed crust pizzas (regular cheese, not hotdog) in my mid-30s, and still love them! Also, I could have sworn those stacked pizzas were double decker pizzas, not triple decker. I may be remembering wrong though. I was excited to try them, but was left underwhelmed.

I think one of the biggest issues with the "salad shaker" is that it didn't come off as anything super special. I remember kids getting the salad bar in school ... the greens came in clamshells, and kids would pile the toppings on it, clip it closed, and shake it while waiting in line. It just wasn't a big novelty. Besides, almost nobody I knew went there and bought salad!

I actually really liked the Double Down from KFC. Just... in saying that, I knew how bad it was. At the same time, with the low carb craze currently going on, I'm sure something like that could make a comeback.

I think it's the barbecue sauce. Try it! See what you think! Although, I think the tricky part is getting to taste LIKE McDonald's, bc if you have never tasted it, you don't know what your shooting for. Just make it until you like how it tastes. :)

I actually loved the McSalad Shakers. I remember getting one pretty much every time I went to McDonald’s around 2000. I do agree the look of it was messy but I did like that the cup allowed you to distribute the dressing across the whole thing without having to worry about accidentally tossing some of the lettuce out. Though ya had to be careful not to put too much pressure on the cup when ya shook it or else off comes the lid and out goes your salad and dressing all over yourself and your car.

I remember everyone hating on the Double Down as if it was somehow more unhealthy than a hamburger already is with how processed those buns are. And don't get me wrong, I love a good hamburger. But some people were straight up in denial. "Ewww, it has fried chicken instead of buns, that's so much worse than the bleached, enriched flour a burger normally has!"

I used to work at a Burger King. And I remember making the cheese tots. It's one of the most unpopular items at Burger King. It takes a total of 3 minutes to cook one bag of them. And even tastes worst when they're old. So, the item only lasts for a total of 3 months. ( and according to me they are disgusting)

Around the same time McDonald's had their hot dog, they also had a bratwurst that was served on a much limited basis during fall. I only remembered my dad ever ordering it and him trying to tell me that sauerkraut came from a poisonous vegetable that had to be prepared a certain way. Meanwhile my mom's family was German.
