My 80-something grandmother was left-handed as a child, but because it was the 40s they "trained" her out of it. It was so traumatic for her that now when she tries to write with her left hand, everything comes out perfectly reversed. Letters, words, everything. It's an interesting remnant of her left handedness, but it sucks that she had to deal with that.

19:33 As a software developer I can confirm. It's absolutely possible for names to not fit the database schema. My guess would be that they use the name as a unique key or indexed the table on that column resulting in that you couldn't have two people sharing the same name ("Jeffrey2" should've worked tho...). And no, there's no reasonable scenario you would do that on a user table, but it's possible xD
@Arimodu2 жыл бұрын

@Obliteratu2 жыл бұрын
Fcuk 8:30 in particalr, then.
@kiiturii2 жыл бұрын
I've tried figuring this out, but every scenario just seems too unlikely.. Not being able to have the same name is the obvious answer, but there's a wide range of fixes that take like 5 seconds to implement, and if the company is really having issues like this, I think they've dodged a bullet by not getting hired there if the reasoning is real and this wasn't faked, or it wasn't just a weird excuse then the issue they have is probably deeper and doesn't only apply to "jeffrey" specifically
@AthenaAGT2 жыл бұрын
The idea that they used peoples names as the clustered index potentially has me laughing so hard, like who does that!? Or the idea that Jeffrey is just too long of a name, and they don't know how to change it to varchar(7) from varchar(5)
@elliotk5499 Жыл бұрын
I now have a head canon that the database dev had some power tripping jerk higher up (probably an owner or CEO named Jeffrey) being a slave driver with unreasonable expectations & harassment. The dev then caught wind they were going to be fired without cause as soon as the database was made. So they made the name Jeffrey and any variation thereof some kind of validation requirement for it. No one knows how to fix it and anyone they have gotten to try says it can't be done because they understand and hate Jeffrey too.

Regarding the repeated 'Jeffery' and job database issue, I think I worked with someone who had this issue. Dude was hired during the pandemic and given all the necessary training and junk, but they found out his name matched another employee's name to the letter, who had already been fired and listed as not rehireable. This prevented them from giving him certain credentials necessary to actually do the work he was hired for. They couldn't fire him without just cause, and they were most likely keeping him around to avoid potential legal disputes due to discrimination loopholes, because for the next six months, this dude just came into work on time, walked around the floor, did what the supervisors asked him to do, then leave. Didn't do a bit of actual work for six months and got paid just the same as the rest of us due to some database BS the higher ups couldn't correct.

16:51 this part got me the hardest because I actually have 2 friends in the band’s drumline named Robert and William. As a Snare drummer, and them being cymbals, I have to hit their cymbals sometimes for certain songs. The funniest part is that they have to hold them themselves. So, if I ever get mad at something they did wrong, just a really haymaker hit on the cymbals or on their fingers with a snare drum stick should teach them a lesson real quick. :)

15:05 This one gave me hella flashbacks. In middle school, it turned out our deputy head master had been cheating on his wife with one of the teachers. When his wife found out, she put it in the local newspaper, local radio stations - anywhere that woman could get it broadcast, she got it. A lot of the mothers had crushes on the guy - safe to say nobody would touch him with a barge pole after that. I remember seeing his name in the paper and thinking he must've done something really good for the community (generally all our newspaper has in it). When I read what she'd written, I took it straight to my mum because I didn't really understand it considering I was like 8. When she explained it to me, I was astounded lmao. Even now, the whole local community still shuns him and the teacher he had the affair with. Turns out she was married too and, if I remember correctly, pregnant at the time. They both ended up getting divorces respectively to be with each other and they acted like they had the greatest love story ever. Any time I see those two though, they look so freaking depressed now. Kinda earned it imo 🤷♀

Not only is the memorization of an entire Scrabble dictionary impressive in and of itself. The ability to win is still a feat in and of itself. Just because you know all of the words, doesn't mean you can recall the best ones fast enough for the situation. It's like being able to have a textbook during a test, you are still going to see people failing the test. I looked up how to pronounce Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz and after about 10 listens, I still can only reliable get the first and last half of the last. That sign about the Telluride and Pallisade looks very fake.

Because I was watching this video then I was notified that the radius for getting a bus and walking to my school is different at either of my divorced parents houses. One house I ride the bus. The other is just on the cusp of me riding the bus so I have to walk. Ironic? I don't know honestly

The broken screen on a plane just happened to me last year. On a 11h flight. It was a return flight so I knew their media catalog and already picked in advance what I wanted to watch. I even bought simple headphones during my stay because the ones they provided on the plane were by far the worst I ever used and I wanted to be able to understand conversation and generally enjoy the movies. I came to my seat and the my screen - and only my screen - was totally screwed up. Not just black, but showing lots of colorful lines. It was so messed up, it couldn't even be turned off (on an overnight flight). Thanks for nothing.

8:07 i remember at school, me and another guy used to put at least a couple ketchup or mustard packets under random men's toilets for almost a whole two months, we were the legends of the school, no one knew who we were but everyone thought and talked about "the packet man" pretty much every day. we eventually got caught but we were so proud of ourselves we didn't give a fuck about losing video games! i remember getting one of the 2nd graders, i've never laughed like that about a prank before, he came out the bathroom all grumpy and said exactly "who's the poop-head who put a ketchup packet under the toilet!!!" we used to use the same pattern (putting the ketchup paquets at precise times) and leave messages sometimes on the toilets, my message used to be "haha numb-nuts, your ass is stained!" and my friend used to write something like "woah, nice ass dude". those were the greatest times...

19:39 This could be due to the fact they might use the first name as the primary identifier (also known as a foreign key) in the database meaning that if someone else is called Jeffery it wouldn't work. One way they could solve this is to add a random number or letter after the name, but it would mean that all correspondence might need logical changes OR they just accept their name as Jeffery1 now. This could cause tax issues though as the name data would not be accurate. It would be a whole thing trust me. This is why you don't use useful data as a foreign key.
@roo25922 жыл бұрын
As someone who has written a database, yes. That’s probably what happened. They didn’t use a unique identifier so now they can’t have more than one person with the same name. Whoever designed that database is lazy as shit.

19:41 my best guess is that when the database was first being set up, they made it so searches for employees are done by first name. This is bad coding because it could cause problems if there is more than 1 employee with that name (it might return the wrong employee) and they decided it was too expensive to fix. Still dumb though.

just make his name "Jeff" or "Jeffrey2" or "jeffrey (followed by the first letter of their last name)". This issue is too simple to fix it can't be the reason
