Your definition of rye bread is spot on: "stale on purpose"!
@norandomnumbers11 ай бұрын
There's not a single slice of rye bread there. Rye bread is made from rye. It's dark brown and hard. Most american "rye" is just regular old white wheat bread with a negligible amount of rye flour mixed in.
@ItsMeTrist8 ай бұрын
@@norandomnumbers Tbh, we have somewhat light brown/light rye toast here in finland that's made with 100% rye. The traditional ryebread is what you described and what i enjoy most. I do think that the ryebread here is also just a mix.
@norandomnumbers8 ай бұрын
@@ItsMeTrist It's a bit misleading advertising when some bread packages do advertise "täysjyväruis" or something like that, like Vaasan Ruispalat. But if you read the ingredients list, it also lists wheat flour. But there's also plenty of full rye breads on the market, my favorite is Oululaisen Jälkiuuni, which also advertises itself as "täysjyväruis", but it also is only rye, no other grains.
@ItsMeTrist8 ай бұрын
@@norandomnumbers With the exception of taikaruis which i just read yesterday as i was watching the vid, contains wheat gluten, but 100% of the grains used were rye. However yeah, i prefer Jälkiuuni myself as well or some ryebread from the local bakeries.
@jimjambananaslam35967 ай бұрын
@@norandomnumbers It's safe to say that Europeans were mixing rye and wheat flour before they introduced wheat to North America, so you can't really make the argument that pure rye bread is more traditional. The light rye used in pastrami sandwiches is usually sourdough and it's specifically a Jewish-American New York deli thing, it's actually a fairly sophisticated bread and not just like Wonderbread with some rye grain mixed in.
@AdventTannhauser2 жыл бұрын
Russian dressing is different from Thousand Island dressing. Russian dressing includes horseradish and chili pepper which makes it spicy, while Thousand Island includes sweet pickle relish which makes it sweet. It's also called Russian dressing because the original recipe included caviar.

Back in the late '70s there was a place back in NoVA, USA, had a sandwich they called the "Bellybinder", looked just like this. They'd have a noisy parade of servers and staff bring it to the table. A friend and I, every Sunday, would go, each having a complimentary bowl of popcorn, this sandwich, a "schooner" of beer, then to finish , a "schooner" ice cream sundae., kind of a friendly competition. I'm tall and skinny, he was big football player type ... and we never failed to finish, to the amazement of diners, staff, and sometimes ourselves. Ahhhh, the memories, lol. Nice job from the states!

Russian dressing doesn't need horseradish or chili pepper. It has soaked and then finely minced onion. This adds an umami fresh onion flavor to the sauce. That's a tough subject, using Philly as a landmark but not actually being in Philly. As a person who grew up within an hour drive of Philly, I use it all the time to tell people where I am from. =P Knowing the Philly area made the task a lot easier. On to the subject of Russian vs Thousand Island is the switch of pickles for horseradish. But essentially the same. Thank you for the ideas of where else I can grab a bite when I visit home. =)

Wouldn't eating a pickle every so often break up the meat monotony? Or is there a reason you do it so methodically?

two different dressings boss, Russian has horse radish and chilli in it to give it a bit of a kick, Thousand Island doesn't.

I would have slipped the pickles in with the meat - in the 5 days it would have taken me to finish that thing!
@mattbenz99 Жыл бұрын
I mean, that is sort of what you are supposed to do. The pickles clean your palate due to the vinegar. This food is super salty, and after a while you stop being able to taste the meat. The pickles and the coleslaw help to keep the meat tasting flavorful after the sheer amount of salt you are ingesting.
