@@TheOneNamedMrLife It would be a good compliment to the AVGN episode, since in that one James talked about 1980's-mid 90's Nintendo Power. Scott's could go more into late 90's-2000's Nintendo Power, potentially even into its eventual end.

That sorta thing started to show up around 1995 and 1996. The magazine started by seemingly heaping praise on everything Nintendo in a friendly way, then the competition (Sega) came along and Nintendo Power seemed to pretend they didn't exist until around 1992 or so. Then we'd start seeing short capsule reviews that actually talked about the negatives of games. By the mid 90s in the latter stages of the "Play It Loud" campaign the "subscribe to Nintendo Power" ads started getting a lot more "in your face" and "edgy" and teen oriented and it started seeping into other aspects of the magazine like the responses to reader mail. I think some of it was an attempted shift to a more "mature" demographic to adopt to their subscriber base likely being in their teens now, but also to combat the "Nintendo is kiddy" image which existed even back then.

I was a subscriber from like issue 10 to around 80 or 90 when I was little kid getting into Nintendo and video games but I still read the magazine in bookstores every now and then after we stopped subbing so I kind of remembered some of this issue. That 100 games list was crazy nostalgic to me, a ton of recency bias, way too many Nintendo 64 games over NES, SNES and Game Boy but some nice to see games too like I remember liking the Faceball games back then and Street Fighter II Turbo was the game that made me beg my parents to get me a Super Nintendo. That was such a good port of the arcade game. It was fun to debate with friends what games should have been higher and what was missing, NP was like that all the time though with their monthly power rankings. Also, definitely surprised to see jokes at the Virtual Boy and live action Super Mario movie expense too. Incredibly interesting time capsule!

I think the only way to appreciate Goldeneye being that far up there is to understand just how big of a deal the game was in 97. You had to have been there. Friends, siblings, fathers, cousins, and uncles all wanted to play it and it was some of the most memorable moments of my childhood being in a crowded room after a holiday dinner and just all the noise going on with your loved ones. This was the case for many and it lasted for years, being the most rented out game at Blockbuster for 2 years straight. It was a BIG deal. Now has it aged? Absolutely. But was it innovative for not just console FPS's but the genre as a whole? Without a doubt.

Yeah, that was a pretty epic issue. I (vaguely) remember when I got it in the mail way back then. I used to have pretty much the whole collection of NP, but sold it at some point. The only issue I kept was 75, because it featured Chrono Trigger, my favorite game. (Though the Virtual Boy stole the cover for it - ya know, because that ended up being terrific.)

Not sure if a lot of them are "recency biases" Star Fox 64 was huge. Full voice acting on N64 is absolutely unheard of. Probably still the best on rails game. GoldenEye was also an amazingly huge deal when it came out. Remember not everyone had a PC that could run Doom or whatever so this was the first FPS that just took off on consoles. Not to mention the multiplayer. Will agree that a lot of first time games Like Metroid and such would feel massive but hurt a lot more to play today (exploring platformer without a map? oof). But just like how Scott has soft spots for his Sponge Bob games, people are/were still pretty attached to Metroid.

I think the 80s kids had to break out the grid paper and draw their own maps back in the day.

@@dapperfan44 oh totally! I've read early reviews of some other games where they said how happy they were not to have to draw maps. but I think you'd agree that most people aren't going to attempt doing that today!

1:11 You know what, we need these for modern consoles! Plus, the one for the Xbox Series S would be pretty funny, considering the fact it's not much bigger than a controller.
