Emio - The Smiling Man really does earn that M rating by the end of the game. There's certain imagery and themes discussed, especially in the epilogue, that are pretty disturbing and upsetting especially for a Nintendo game.
@gamer3ed4842 ай бұрын
Yeah. By the time the credits rolled, I was not 100% sold. It felt like it was an extremely soft M-Rating and that the story wrapped up a little too quickly. But then the epilogue happened and…let’s just say that was one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen in any game, let alone a Nintendo game. The game as a whole was like an 8/10 for me, but that epilogue bumps it up to a 9 or 10 easily.

@gamer3ed4842 ай бұрын
@@joegardner851 Yeah. The actual main game is no more violent than the other two games in the series, but the epilogue is so much more violent it’s insane. I flinched from that scene that takes place in a TV reflection. Anyone who’s seen it knows what I mean. Definitely the most violent thing Nintendo has published that I can think of. Especially since it’s so realistic. Exploding bodies in Bayonetta might be more violent, but it’s definitely got an air of fantasy about it. Emio feels more visceral and grounded.

@@Sar1386 The main story never gets too bad, there is some blood but overall it's very much a soft M-rating. However once the first credits role and you unlock the epilogue, the game actually gives you a content warning saying "hey you should make sure you're ready before you play this", and yeah the epilogue is significantly darker and more disturbing than the main game but also the best part of the story by far. It alone bumped the game from an 8/10 to a 9/10 for me. I think Nintendo purposefully made it separate from the main game in case some people aren't able to handle it. Devil's Third was pretty awesome. I remember I was playing Xenoblade X when Devil's Third got to my home. I was like "Okay, let me check this"... Then I spend a week only playing Devil's Third and only came back to Xenoblade X 30 hours later. The single-player was GREAT. The style of the game was great, the cheesy plot was funny as hell, the boss battles were excellent, changing from gun fight to sword fight was handled just perfectly. And the only multiplayer was just insane, some of the best I've ever played. I really don't understand why reviewers hated it... but it was during that time when it was cool to hate Nintendo and the Wii U, and many reviewers on KZbin were the "angry type" that targeted Nintendo, so I guess there is there. My only problem with Devil's Third was the not so great framerate, but it was very playable and not really much different from most games at the time. And I am 100% sure many reviewers did NOT play the game. Jim Sterling comments on the plot and gameplay elements were factually wrong, you could clearly see he did not play the game (and at the time he was an huge anti-SJW, anti-feminism, so his content was just trash back then). IGN's review also had the same issues and they claimed to have played the multiplayer when the multiplayer simply wasn't online yet (so they just flatout lied). But hey, professional online gaming journalism was just pure garbage, no wonder they are all dead today. By the way, I also remember the marketing for this game being terrible. The only multiplayer trailer they had on KZbin at the time was actually uploaded by me (on this very account). It went viral with over 139k views and it was the second most viewed video of the game on KZbin (behind the E3 trailer). I still have the video, but it's on private now - and it was also na E3 trailer, much more interesting than the original and Nintendo simply didn't even bothered to release it (I don't remember how I got my hands on it, maybe a press release or some random website somwhere). I also made a comparison video showing the evolution of the game when compared to the E3 gameplay and Itagaki even commented on it on Facebook.

I dunno about the performance being on par with most games on the time, since while there were definitely some PS3 or 360 games that ran poorly like Far Cry 3, even then DT is probably worse than those, but by 2015 PS4 and Xbox One made at least locked 30 to be the standard for 2 years, and also most of Nintendo's games on Wii U ran pretty well, so it was at least one of the worst runnings games of the year and it's console.
@gundamzerostrike2 ай бұрын
@@oscarzxn4067 Sure, but the game didn't run poorly at all. The framerate was a solid 30 fps with a few hicups here and there, MUCH better than Far Cry 3, my dude. Hell, I am playing FF16 on fidelity mode on my PS5 at the moment, and it runs worse than Devil's Third, for example. And I don't really care because it's still pretty playable.

I think Emio definitely should be rated M, its not super spooky but does deal with some hard hitting topics. Not sure about Miitopia though

I do think hearing Scott briefly mention "gay relationships" is amusing, because he gives off peak "Median Voter" energy. Like he's generally supportive but if you asked him what LGBT stood for he'd probably only get 2 right at most. But hey, good enough for me lol.

During the Halo CE era (pre Halo 2) I didnt own an xbox but REALLY loved the game as I got to play splitscreen at a friends house often. Geist's multiplayer bot mode was the closest thing I had to the Halo CE multiplayer experience at home. It had mp bots which allowed me to play mp alone and gave it that online vibe too. So I love Geist in spite of its midness.

What is funny about Emio: in Europe it is also rated 18 but in Germany it got the USK 16. The funny part is that Germany was very hard against video games in the past. There were games that were not allowed to be sold in the open. You had to ask for the game to get it because all advertiment was banned. And then there were games that were completely banned. It was illegal to sell them.

You can thank Sega with their beloved Genesis console for ushering in mature rated games most notably the uncensored version of Mortal Kombat. After the sequel came out Nintendo decided to bite the bullet and release Mortal Kombat II on the SNES fully uncensored with blood and guts galore. And guess what? The SNES version outsold the Sega Genesis version.

Wouldn’t the original Famicom Detective Club games retroactively be their first M Rated games?
@coreylineberry85572 ай бұрын
Well, they were rated T. Emio, the new one, is rated M.
@Mimi.10012 ай бұрын
I believe the original Famicom Detective Club games weren't that mature. Kinda like the Ace Attorney games which are rated T for the most part too. You do have murder, death and such as themes, but the presentation is still pretty tame (But I guess you couldn't do that much on NES/SNES anyway). Emio is much darker from what I've heard, especially in the epilogue.

Geist wasn't the best polished, but it definitely deserves a second chance. Make it less linear and refine the shooting and it'd be something great.

Correction about Emio, it's the 4th game in the series. The actual 3rd game is from the Satellaview where you play as Ayumi herself before Emio, BS Tantei Club: Yuki ni Kieta Kako. It takes place between The Girl Who Stands Behind and The Missing Heir. And since Nintendo recently added F Zero Satellaview stuff to F Zero 99, we could get a remake of that game.

Genuinely pisses me off that Conker's Bad Fur Day wasn't published by the big N. To me it's the only M-rated Nintendo game that perfectly feels like one. At least they still distributed it which I guess is kinda close to publishing it, though it does still bum me out how it could've been Nintendo's first published M-rated title but wasn't.

People (well, English speakers) clearly still don't give a damn about Famicom Detective Club since I can only assume the remakes of the first two sold poorly. So poorly that NoA changed the name for the English version. Instead of *Famicom Detective Club: The Smiling Man,* we got _Emio_ - _The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club._ They clearly felt that they had to obscure the fact that it's a part of that series. It'll probably help. I imagine this will sell better than the first two. There's almost no game-play of them on KZbin. Not a good sign... Oh, and The Smiling Man is actually the fourth game. The 3rd is call _BS Detective Club: The Past Erased by Snow._ BS being Broadcast Satellite, as in the Satelliview.

Apparently when they were designing the Nintendo costumes in Bayonetta they tried making it as modest as possible, but after they sent it to be approved by Nintendo they immediately heard back with disapproval. Allegedly they thought that the costume weren’t something Cereza would wear and demanded it would be more revealing.
