1) Long weekend on Pokpok Island near Arawa. Book by emailing them directly: urunabayretreat@gmail.com
2) Getting to mingle with locals. Always a pleasure no matter where in the world you are.
3) Trekking and exploring around Sisivi with Rotokas Ecotourism. Organised directly with Rotokas Ecotourism. rotokasecotourism.com/
4) Day trips island hopping in a banana boat. This can arranged through locals, Bougainville Experience Tours or direct with banana boat drivers in some cases. bougtours.com/
5) Experiencing a traditional sing sing. Talk with locals, volunteers and expats, regularly check online including Facebook groups and keep your eyes peeled for posters around Buka, Arawa or Buin for any advertisements about sing sing festivals. They are often not well promoted.
6) Hiking to the volcanic crater Lake Eruovi / Billy Mitchell near Wakanui. Organised directly with Rotokas Ecotourism. rotokasecotourism.com/
7) Playing games on the beach. The pikininis love to play football, rugby and volleyball, as do I, so everyone is happy!
8) Swimming and snorkeling at Loloho Beach near Arawa. Luckily there was already a relationship established with the chief, which I happily continued, which allowed me to use the beach. I suggest talking to locals and who'll no doubt meet someone who knows someone with access to a beach.
9) Dancing to a bamboo band. I could watch these play for hours and have done so! Again, keep your eyes to the ground for potential performances and also be ready for those fantastic spontaneous ones too!
10) Exploring beyond Buka Town to see the many sides of Buka Island. I have chatted with people who've explored the island by bicycle, however I had the opportunity to do so by 4x4 in exchange for taking some photographs. A private hire or local with a vehicle is also a good bet.
11) Local friends offering to show you around their villages. I always jump at the opportunity and find it fascinating to see the off the beaten track villages, which you'd never see otherwise. If someone offers, say yes!
12) Watching the sunrise from Premier Hill overlooking Kieta near Arawa. It really is the perfect spot to start the day and easily accessible by bicycle from Arawa or vehicle.

I don't know why but the song that was sung through many parts of this video made me cry. The people look and sound so lovely and friendly. I've been aware of this place for a while but it's so remote-but I reeeeaaally want to go.

I spent much of my childhood on Bougainville (late 70s, and then backwards and forwards over the 80s). Your videos back many happy memories. The small islands, Buka, Buin, Pok Pok, Kieta, Arovo Island.... It is a special place. The view from Arovo over to Balbi and the volcano Bagana - unforgettable. I remember the Bougainville people were lovely. But I noticed the change when I was there - hostility building up towards outsiders - such as shanty towns emerging as mainlanders flocked in, contributing to tensions. This was of course a fallout from the mine. BCL, however, was not the worst of mining companies. Relations between the people and the villagers in the early years were generally good; the mine would use its helicopters on a daily basis to deliver supplies for remote mountain villagers and assist with transportation needs; tried to minimise disturbance and compensate where it could, and provided services such healthcare. Expats, including executives and the CEO, lived in relatively modest houses and their pay was not outrageous. It was nothing like Grasberg, operated by Freeport, in West Papua (an area Adam you must visit; try and get to the Cartensz Pyramid area if you can; apparently you can see the snow-capped mountains from the sea; but also the serious disfiguration on the mountains and environmental consequences on the Papuan people of the mine - which people need to know about). Nature and the local people won the battle in Bougainville, but I am scared that capitalism will win the war. How long can this place stay as beautiful as this, and the children with their smiles, as happy as this?

Hi there, the first few years of my young life were spent on a plantation called Tulaen Plantation on Buka Island . Wow ❤️ what a time and special memories for my entire family. We would a like to visit soon as a final goodbye from my parents who had good foresight and love to have raised a bunch of unruly kids on a large rainforest island with the kindest and ever so nurturing and vibrant Buka people.

Wow. This video brought back so many memories. Was the Bamboo Band playing at the bar or club at Loloho?

Mark Hb that's great! The bamboo bands were on Pokpok Island and also in Arawa at a bar called 3 Rocks. There are no bars or clubs at Loloho anymore.
