Harry Potter Theory

Күн бұрын

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re discussing Albus Dumbledore and the discovery he made in his youth that made him famous. I am of course talking about his discovery of the 12 uses of Dragon’s Blood- an alchemical feat worthy of a place in the history books.
Today, when we think of Dumbledore’s achievements, the accomplishment that stands out most was his 1945 defeat of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, as he effectively saved the wizarding world from a perilous fate. After 1945, there wasn’t a wizarding household in the world that didn’t know his name.
However, what many don’t realize is that Dumbledore is also quite famous from his OTHER achievements in the wizarding world.
Dumbledore lived a long time, 115 years to be exact, and during his formative years he was able to achieve a LOT, beginning to impress other witches and wizards as early as the year 1893.
“In a matter of months, Albus’s own fame had begun to eclipse that of his father. By the end of his first year, he would never again be known as the son of a Muggle-hater, but as nothing more or less than the most brilliant student ever seen at the school.”
And for the remainder of Dumbledore’s studies, with his negative associations now a thing of the past, Dumbledore continued to excel- achieving every award and accolade imaginable.
After the death of his sister, he decided to take a trip to France where he visited his old friend Nicolas Flamel. Flamel was a famed alchemist, and it was in France that Dumbledore studied the ancient art and science of alchemy under his tutelage. After an unknown period of time, Dumbledore returned back to Britain- and it just so happened that in this time period Dumbledore became infatuated with the study of dragon’s blood- specifically it’s uses- a relatively uncharted subject in wizarding culture. Dragon blood was the blood of any of the many species of dragon, and it had 12 uses - all of which Dumbledore ‘discovered’ and subsequently published, earning him widespread recognition. Dumbledore was now world famous.
But despite this discovery catapulting Dumbledore to stardom, there are still a lot of UNKNOWNS when it comes to Dumbledore’s discovery- at least, from our perspective. While the uses of Dragon’s Blood were published in all sorts of alchemical manuscripts, we- the muggle readers- have never been enlightened as to what these 12 uses are. Today, I want to dig in and see what I can find on this subject.
First things first- what IS Dragon’s blood?
Dragon’s blood, as you might have expected, was blood extracted from any species of dragon- a dark red glutinous substance. The blood of a dragon was particularly powerful- but also adaptable- which is why it was eventually discovered to have so much practical application in the wizarding world. It’s worth noting, however, that Dragon’s weren’t the only magical creature with POWERFUL blood.
One sip of unicorn blood could keep witches and wizards alive even when they were an inch from death, but it did come with a big price tag- a condemnation to a cursed existence- a half-life.
Drinking the blood of a Re'em, a type of rare giant horse, granted the drinker immense strength for a short period of time.
And the blood of a Qilin, a mythical creature that was part-dragon and part-horse, had the ability to show people visions.
It’s clear that the blood of certain magical creatures has extremely powerful capabilities, but oddly enough the first two uses of Dragon’s blood that I want to discuss in this video seem fairly mundane by comparison.

One use of Dragon's Blood, which is well documented in a piece of German Saga literature, the so called Nibelungenlied most of the German boys knew up to 50 years ago or even later, you didn't mention. Nibelungenlied is a poem from the middle ages describing the (more or less) heroic deeds of a family of germanic kings and their descendents including some reality from the time of the "barbaric migration" around the fifth century A.D. In this saga a knight called Siegfried of Xanten sets out to fight a dangerous dragon. To sucessfully perform this task, Siegfried makes use of a special sword prepared by a skilled blacksmith called Wieland. Wieland, in a tedious process of forging, was able to prepare swords that did not break when stressed too much. They rather gave way a little and could then still be used for further fight instead of being rendered worthless due to flying to pieces. The best of his swords, called Balmung, WIeland gives to Siegfried, who manages to kill the dragon with it. The blood squirts out of the dragon's veins and accumulates to a small pond in which Siegfried immerses himself completely before the blood drains away. The bath in the dragon's blood strenghtens Siegfried's skin so much, that he becomes invulnerable by the standard weapons of that time, like (regular) swords, spears, lances, arrows and axes. Unfortunately though, a leaf from a lime tree falls off and comes to rest on Siegfrieds back just in between his scapulae before he takes his magical invulnerabality bath. Thus, a small spot of his skin underneath the lime leaf isn't touched by the dragon's blood and stays unreinforced, this fact finally leading to Siegfried's untimely death, since Siegfried's wife, Kriemhild, beguiled by Hagen von Tronje, a friend of her brothers', gives away the secret location of the vulnerable spot, this information being used by Hagen to cowardly murder Siegfried from behind. Story's end: Outraged, Kriemhild plots for revenge. She marries Attila, King of the Huns, and, after some years invites the whole murderous gang of her brothers including Hagen to attend a festival at the king's court in the far east. After the feast, where Kriemhild manages to make everybody well-oiled, the Huns and the Germanes start a deadly row from which only Hagen remains alive in the end, still witlessly drunk. Kriemhild now takes Balmung and cuts off Hagen's head, thus getting her revenge. She, in turn, is immediately killed for her act of cowardice by Hildebrand, armourer of Theoderich of Verona, king of the Eastern Goths.

I somewhat doubt that the effects would be as easy to find as just consuming the blood, since I can't see someone getting famous from that. I also get the feeling that dragon blood is toxic, which could be why the raw dragon steak helps with pain, as it kills bacteria and possibly dulls the pain receptors.

So, it's not much a use as a side effect, but it confirms the use in potions. I personally think that dragon's blood can cause to the wizards that drink it dragon's pox, but only in some of the situations, not all of them obviously, but I think it is very much plausible that infected dragon's blood can pass on the infection to the drinker.

I could see it as being used in potions meant to stimulate a patient who was close to death or at least badly injured, much like adrenalin is used in our Muggle hospitals when a patient is in need of something to help stimulate the heart for example. Dragons are very strong creatures (or so it appears) so I could see substances that are natural to a dragon's system being found in their blood.

My theory is simple - If dragon blood can be used as a cleaning solution and anti-akne medicine, it's probably somewhat acidic or/and alkaline in nature, but with strong magic in it. It's a thick liquid with it's own animal magic that doesn't need to be added in by a caster. So it can be used to make stuff simular to what acid and/or alkaline are used for in muggle world and what magical components are used for in magical world (combined or irrespective of dragon blood's chemical composition). - Obviously, potion ingredient - To help make paint, perfume and fabric with magical properties - Anti-akne cream ingredient - Ingredient in stomach medicine - To make potion bases and spell helpers that involve electicity - To make energy batteries for machines (using alkaline in it) - To make a "magic battery" for machines, charms, creatures or magicians (using magic in it) - To make some potion ingredients cleaner or more pure (both alkaline and magic of dragin blood) - As an ingredient of fire protection creams or substances - As a base liquid for transfiguration that needs magical substance thicker than water - Ingredient in cleaning products (like J.K said) - Ingredient in magical bombs and fireworks

Chinese dragons are not completely the same as dragons in western lore, those two kinds of dragons are either completely different mythical creatures that share the same name or different species of dragons. Some Chinese dragons are also associated with water, they would live in water bodies and bring rain. So maybe it would make more sense to limit the good luck use of dragon's blood only to the blood from Chinese dragons, since the two kinds of dragons are very different and regarded differently in their respective cultures.

for the colour issue regarding green and red blood, the oxygen carrier inside the muscle fibers might be green while the oxygen carrier in the blood is red. it would be very odd but so is much of magic creatures physiology

For me dragon's blood could be used to purify gold, dragons are known for having a hoard usualy gold, and alchemy is known for trying to turn metals in to gold

You are super wrong about irl dragonsblood. There's 3 main kinds, one is from a palm fruit, one from the dragonsblood tree found in socotra, the one used for violin making and toothpastes, and the 3rd, which comes from a south American tree, which is useful for healing wounds.

direct dragon blood transfusion into a mages body might have interesting effects; especially if one's wand is made of dragon heartstring which came from the same dragon from whom the blood was taken from.

Wasn´t it that Dragon Hearts where used to turn things into gold before they where used as Wand cores so it would say that dragon blood could be part of the philosopher stone (also dragons are pretty much long living creatures so it would make sense that the blood could increase ones own health)

NO! The dragon's blood was not referenced by Hagrid purchase of his dragon steak, it was the color of the meat itself. There were juices that flowed down into his beard, but the blood itself was not said to be green or red. Perhaps, as you said about Horace Slughorn, dragon blood can MIMIC human blood, at least in isolation. As to the possibility that dragon's blood can make your skin stronger, you flashed up a picture of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. What if he were not slowly turning into a snake, but a dragon?

Dragon blood can be used as a fire-resistance potion that you can drink to help against fire, sounds like one use of it.

So if you drink dragons blood your nails grow, skin strengthen, breathe a bit of fire and then get lucky. Good thing they're hard to kill or they'd be over poached.

A dragon steak?? Does eating a dragon steak have benifits..I doubt fire destroys the blood through the cooking process and the fact that Hagrid had a STEAK(a cut of edible meat) means that a dragon can be eaten or why would they take the time to cut a steak??

Your mistake here is to think of it as it is... Any use of any substance in our muggle world it's not just in its pure form, *undiluted* So it would be rather interesting to hear use of "parts" of dragon blood or/and pure/parts of it diluted/mixed with other substance. Although I don't think Rowling would ever come with those kinds of ideas as she is rather "naive" in her world-building... But considering that, maybe your theories can be considered consistent with Rowling's world building...
