i work as a part time IT in a private institute and part time as independent IT at home (Argentina) You can be certain about people having PCs under those circumstances. I found once a tiny Goku figure under the GPU, the client said the card would sag so badly that he had to put something there that did not cover the right cooler. The tiny figure fit just perfectly and looked badass. Couldn't agree more. Budget builds always amaze me.

Just be wary of 95W limted boards. Mine is and alao has only 3 phase VRM. My 1090T kept overheating the VRM and shutting down because I was dumb and forgot to check compat list. Burnt my finger it was so hot. So like a true banger I zip tied a 120mm case fan onto the heatpipes of the X2 6000+ stock cooler I had, hanging out over top the VRM and blowing extra air into the CPU fan. Still cant OC but runs overnight prime95 at 2.9GHz. Paired with an R7 360 it does OK for about $80 Cdn.

Love all this, I feared the day was done. When I'd go with a friend down Los Angeles to visit family there were office parks all around where they lived. They threw out a lot of computers, would see them sitting next to dumpsters or in the alley. YES! First great build was from eMachine parts. The businesses had put lots of strange cards in them and half the fun was figuring out what those were and how we could exploit them. Seems absurd now but back then there was a 28 or 30 Gb limit on hard drives, how much memory they could address. But we found this special network card that could transfer data from other computer drives so we rigged that in and had an unbelievable 256 Gb total. Used that build as a server and put all our friends music on it and made our own internet library. We knew we were so cool! Next one was the king, Opteron 180 Denmark (2005) taken out of a discarded server and put in Socket 939 (DFI LanParty! that was in a Thermaltake Armor case that spiders had got into and they guy was terrified of them so got it for $25) that was our office mainstay till 3 or 4 years ago and still runs as an HTPC (though the android boxes are great, small, run on 5 or 10 watts and have replaced it).

The Thuban chips still offer some nice performance. I was using a 1090T for a while earlier this year whilst between builds, overclocked to 4GHz on a Gigabyte 790X motherboard that I bought in 2009, and it handled most games like a champ paired with a 290X. The only issue was power draw, which was obviously ridiculous with the CPU at 1.45V and the 290X as well. A Noctua NH-U14S was comfortably able to tame the heat though, even at that voltage.
@Minmataro7187 жыл бұрын
So many new games are super reliant on the gpu that you can get away with a tin can cpu lol. I gathered some old parts and built a phenom IIx6 1100t, RX460 (only newish part), 8gb ram in some old ibuypower AZZA atx case from 2010 for my small daughter and this little girl is playing RE7, GTA V, Dark Souls 3, Sims 4 and more. She is so happy,

In 20+ years of building and working on computers from 486 through today's processors, I'd have to say the Phenom II is my personal favorite CPU of them all.
@MrDaChicken7 жыл бұрын
If you didn't OC the northbridge on the Phenom, you missed out on a huge gain. Stock NB is 2000. A lot of the 10xx series Thubans will hit 2600-2800 NB. While basically creating ZERO extra heat. And it makes a huge difference in cpu thruput.

The real beauty of phenom 2 CPU's is that you can put them in most AM2+ boards as well (and some AM2), keeping in mind that if you have a 125Watt TDP chip then you'll need a board with 4+1 phase power at least. The 6 core Thuban chips up to the 1065T are all 95Watt with the 1075T-1100T being 125Watt. I have the 1045t but I could only clock to 3.4GHz on that, though I didn't really push to find a base clock over 260 that was stable. Many of the 4 core chips have both flavours of TDP, so it's best to get the 95Watt version if available as they tend to be better on voltage requirements and look for C3 stepping chips as they are from later die lots. I have a Phenom 2 955 C2 stepping chip and the number of boards with N/A in the CPU compatibility list is staggering, if it's mentioned at all with it being a 125Watt part. Mind though if you are going to overclock then you are going to want a 4+1 phase AM2+ board anyway, if you aren't going AM3(+). Hint DDR2 memory is dirt cheap, DDR3 memory is still nearly as expensive as DDR4 in 4GB modules, I got some 4GB samsung die 800mhz ddr2 new on ebay for AU $20 for two modules total 8GB, AMD only RAM (won't work in intel systems). Though the board fully populated (16GB) with these becomes unstable and 667 speed needs to be manually selected with CAS 6 latency instead of CAS 5@800. Though three sticks worked fine @800. Yes I have 4 of these sticks.

I really want to try and build a desktop gaming PC but my biggest concerns are, 1. How powerful of a power supply do I need? 2. Do all motherboards universally fit into any PC tower? What is the maximum amount of internal hard drives can I install? 3. Do newer up to date motherboards support .m2 SSD's and Sata SSD's? I want to install 16Cpu's @ 3.5Ghz. Do I need a special type of motherboard to support 16Cpu's? Finally, is water cooling the way to go? I've heard a lot of great things about water cooling.

1-type psu calculator on google, then you put your pc configurations on that site (coolermaster for example), they will display your power usage and a recomended power suply that have a safety factor above your wattage, i recomend that you use a psu of know brand, not a xigmatek for example. 2-i dont know, but you can take measures, and you can visit the mobo website take those measures, use a board in your case as a pattern, i dont know. 2.1- 4 to 6 hard drives 3-you need to go to the motherboard site to see that, probrably yes. 4-16 cpus's??? you mean server cpu's, they need server boards, max cpus per board that i know are 2 in some xeons. watercooling or aircooling is more of a choice of the owner to have, both top cooler are great.

Built a Phenom 9600 Agena system back in teh day and it hung in there, but eventually got rid of it cuz it had a bug that made it not like 64bit operating systems....1st gen Phenoms had some issues @_@

the main problem with AM3 Phenom builds is the lack of SSSE3 instructions, this means that your CPU doesn't fully support DX 12, 3D Mark Time Spy Doesn't even run on these CPUs, RE7, BF1 and AoTS crashes on some scenes with DX12 mode...
