Are Live Rock Concerts Becoming More Like Disney Movies? The 13 Top Mt. Rock Olympus Rock Bands!
Hey every one!
Not only do I reveal the Top 13 Rock Bands of all time in tonight’s video, but I also cover how some of the newer light show-oriented Rock bands are using new and innovative ways of attracting new and eager Rock fans to attend their concerts!
They are also attracting a new and younger audience willing to pay top dollar for such events!
But are these events that literally connects each and every attendee to the light-show live, but in essence each audience member becomes an individual pixel of the show itself!
But has such events become nothing more than an interactive Disney movie? And do such events take away from the experience sonically? And do new and younger Rock audiences event care? Is this the next new and bold approach to revitalizing the Music Industry?
Only time & this video will tell!
Also tonight I cover the 10 Top Rock Bands of all time! Yes! The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, & Pink Floyd are joined by the other Top 10 Rock Bands of all time! These are the bands that represent the major sub-genres of Rock, and so there will be bands from Country Rock, Jazz Rock, & Hard Rock!
Link To Beginning of Tonight’s Main Topic: 05:59
If you enjoy tonight’s video, be sure to give it a Thumbs-Up, as that better identifies the channel to a larger audience, and helps with channel growth!
If you haven’t subscribed to the channel yet, just hit that subscribe to ‘The Tribe’ button and then tap that Top-Bell Icon, so that you’ll be notified of future videos!
Enjoy!

The triad on top of my Olympus: The Beatles, The Who and Genesis. For the 13 spots underneath(in no particular order), the Stones, the Kinks, the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, ELO, Yes, the Grateful Dead, Devo, U2, Big Country, XTC and the Clash. Special mentions for Heart, Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Elton John Band, Cheap Trick, Rush, Talking Heads & Blackmore's Night(yes, I enjoy them more than Deep Purple and Rainbow). I love Klaatu(great out of the box pick).

What a great list! I like these bands, but we are all individuals; here is mine. #1. The Beatles. My parents are from Liverpool, enough said. #2. Pink Floyd. Do I need to explain it? #3. The Police. The band I grew up with being born in 1968, and attending school in that important ten to sixteen years of age. #4. Led Zeppelin. #5. Rush. I am Canadian, and the older I get, the more I love Rush. #6. The Doors. The 80's resurgence of the Doors was right when I was at that age. #7. Iron Maiden. The importance of their work in the 80's, and the memories of that era are intertwined. #8. Love and Rockets. Bauhaus are touring again, Peter Murphy is great but the guitar work and tempo of Rockets is just fun. #9. Gary Numan. If it was just memories then he wouldn't be on this list, but he has come back with a vengeance. Brilliant. #10. The Tragically Hip. The Hip provided the soundtrack for my twenties. #11. Deep Purple. One of the three formative bands, the metal grandfathers (Sabbath is on my Hon Ment.). #12. The Who. They seem to be the red-headed stepchild of the British Invasion, but they were great, and Daltry can still belt it out. #13. Queen. Just so many tracks, so diverse...a band that grabbed the matel, arena, hard rock, and top-40 crowds, at once! The honourable mentions are funny, I am sure that in a year, some of them will have replaced, some in the list. Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, Primus, The Clash, The Cure, The Pixies, The Cult, Ministry...and at one time, U2...they just got so smug....and there are many, many more.

I agree that the Who should have been on the list as well as the Beatles and Moody Blues. Love your list. Wouldn’t have put the Police in mine. And I Cannot believe I have never heard of Klaatu. Thought I was well versed in Rock. Anyway, got something new to go check out now. Correction, went and looked up Klaatu and found that I knew and very much like some of their songs. Just didn’t know their name for some reason. But still will have to give their albums a listen to see their work and how I like it overall, not just the hits. Thanks for the channel as I enjoy your view point and knowledge.

Interesting list. Mine would be as follows (in rough order depending upon how I feel on a particular day): 1. The Beatles 2. Led Zeppelin 3. Pink Floyd 4. Steely Dan 5. The Doors 6. U2 7. The Rolling Stones 8. The Who 9. The Kinks 10. The Velvet Underground 11. Roxy Music 12. Genesis 13. Yes Some solo artists have had regular touring bands and studio musicians even though they are largely classed as solo artists eg Paul McCartney & Wings, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, David Bowie. These would probably displace two or three of the above if allowed.

Beatles don't belong in any live list. 1) They usually had a 20 minute set, played for only 15, and left. Lame. 2) With their early audience mostly braindead, screaming pre-teen girls + amps and speakers were garbage = couldn't hear the band anyway. Double lame. While The Beatles are the most iconic band of all time their wasn't any virtuoso musicianship to see live. No lightshow or pyro. No effects. No mood changes. Just 4 moptops bobbing their heads to their bubblegum audience. Triple lame

When it comes to progressive rock I will take the Moody Blues over Yes any day because the Moody Blues didn’t have to do whole album sides to make their point. They made their point in four minutes with the exception of Nights in White satin. They had more of a pop sense too

Yes didn't make songs to take up an entire side to make any point. That's not the intention. Close to the Edge is a maginficant song that is 18 minutes but has elements The Moody Blues couldn't have done. I would take Yes any day because they had a pop sense; but prog rock wasn't about that. The Moody Blues didn't have the talent Yes had; nor the ability to change direction yes did from the late 70's into 90215 in 1983.

@@j.dragon651 I respectfully suggest that they very much had a point, it's just that you missed it. Regardless, Yes vocals are just another instrument, or colour, on their palette that they created their diverse and changing soundscapes from. When I listen to (particularly Yes Album through to Drama) Yes, I'm immersed. I rarely even perceive the lyrics through the sounds. Beautiful. Oh, and I like the Moody Blues, but they don't quite reach the eminence of Yes.

Glad to see Deep Purple on this list - just this August - but 50 years ago - they played several nights in Japan (Tokyo and Osaka, if I have it right) and - like most bands of the era - very little, if anything, by way of "lightshows" or projected images - the resulting live album - "Made in Japan" - released several months afterwards - one of the all time classic live albums (no studio overdubs or fixing things up "digitally") - plenty of other great live stuff by DP and - to the best of my knowledge - at least the stuff from the 70s - what you hear on the CD is what the audience heard !

I recently revisited Klaatu. I had heard their first record at a friends house shortly after it came out and was mildly entertained but after a revival of interest I picked up that record for the first time not long ago. I became hooked and made it a goal to acquire all five albums in vinyl record form. ("Hope" is currently my personal fave but I really love all five!) Literally yesterday as of this writing I received the final piece of the puzzle which is Magenta Lane! These albums were not cheap, especially Magenta Lane, but I felt it was important to have all of them in vinyl record format as they were initially released! Apparently ML was a half speed master release. It doesn't say that on the record but it was sold as such and priced accordingly on Discogs. When I look at the different releases of this album, there seems to be only one vinyl release and it is described as Half Speed Master. Is it true then that if you have Magenta Lane in vinyl format, it can be assumed to be a Half Speed Master? I know it sounds amazing on my system! I also absolutely LOVE Badfinger and I currently have 3 of theirs. "Straight Up" is currently my fave. It's just a perfect record through and through!

Hey! You Rock! I read a bunch of the comments on this post and I realize the A&R guy from Virgin that said 'There are about 500,000 XTC fans on this planet." must have been right. If you like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Police, you got to check out some XTC. The finest band Swindon has ever produced. Start with Skylarking.

Well done on deciding your top 13. I could never undertake such a task but at my advancing age, i have recently 'discovered' a Polish band Riverside that has completely turned my musical life upside down. For me Ozric Tentacles, Mahogany Rush and Budgie were always my top 3 bands but i think Riverside might be entering that competition.

There's alot of good Polish Eastern European bands. Something heavier Polish Band "Bantha Riders". Ukrainian band Ignea - "Alga" song. Female singer and they split their songs between English and Ukrainian, alot of good tunes. Moldova "Seas on the Moon" - The Regress (video isn't much, but the song is fantastic!) w/Lena Scissorhands (also Moldova). It's not so much a band as 2 brothers writing the music and having guest singers. Really good. And Lena is one of my favorite female singers right now. Greece "Villagers from Ioannina City" - "Age of Aquarius" album. Entire album is great, and I think best rock album of 2021. They also have a great live concert filmed in Athens also very good. Also sure your familiar with Uriah Heep - "Outsider" album from 2014. It's really solid, alot of good tunes on it. I'll check out Riverside. Thanks.

You are right about the Eagles. Both Frey and Henry had successful solo careers outside of the Eagles so when they got back together they ran the band like a dictatorship. You have Walsh who also had a great solo career being more of less a yes man. Don Felder they downright fired and he was the reason they got that harder sound we all know the Eagles for.

Hey Mike, I feel lucky to have seen about half the bands on this list. YES, The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and Steely Dan. But, IMVHO you have left out a few of my faves that I saw live multiple times, specifically Grateful Dead, Phish and Aerosmith. I know tastes vary, but I still like them. I'm sure others will not approve of my choices, but hey, that's just too bad. I'm sure I would not like some of their choices. That's ROCK AND ROLL!!!

Love your channel (there's more meat in here than in the competition!). I agree with your choices, and will have to check out Klaatu -- never was aware of them other than being wannabe Beatle clones. Sadly missed The Who and The Doors, they would have merited a place here (Black Sabbath are too specialized). And the top three will surely remain unassailable.

I like your list. Agree with most of it. Obviously, geatest lists are all subjective. It's hard to pigeonhole some bands into a specific genre or sub-genre. One reason I think the Beatles are so great is that you can't really put them in any category. They had Rock, Pop, Country, Jazz, and who knows what else, and 90% of it is good.

Alice Cooper is a great band that had an emotional impact on me at 18. Glad you listed Jethro Tull, I saw their first 7 American tours. Great video. First love Tull I think I’ve mentioned Tull first concert I ever saw 72 thick as a brick tour with Gentle Giant opening. Saw Purple in 74 Burn tour first tour with Coverdale Hughes lineup. Saw Cooper twice 73 New Year’s Eve muscle of love tour & first welcome to my nightmare tour. Love that you mentioned Uriah Heep Gary Thain & Dennis Dunaway from Cooper group are two of my main inspiration as a bass player. As far as light shows it should be used to enhance not overshadow the band but I also don’t want to see a band stand there staring at their shoes. As far as the Eagles love a lot of their stuff but like you got tired of some of the bullshit. Funny thing is Don Felder was responsible for their biggest hit Hotel California & wrote one of my faves Victim of Love. Steely Dan very consistently great. Great bass playing on their albums too.

I’m an ‘80s kid & ‘90s teen. For the past few years, I’ve been exploring bands from the ‘60s & ‘70s (which is my favorite era of music) that I haven’t heard of on the radio that get good praises from fans and discovered great new bands. I’ve discovered and became a fan of Rainbow, Uriah Heep, UFO, The Sweet and many others thanks to people from the era that discusses their favorite music. When I heard, you mention Klaatu, I did the exact same thing and decided to look them up and listen. After listening to their 1st three albums, I must confess that I don’t like them. Their music is consistently soft and lack guitar playing for most of their songs. Being soft isn’t bad, but lacking guitar is, to me at least. They focused too much on the other instruments and after awhile it just gets boring. They do have that Beatles sound, but not from their good songs. I can only hear “When I’m 64” so often. So on Klaatu, I must pass on them. I can see why they failed. Lack of guitar playing hurt them in my opinion. Thanks for mentioning them, though, as I like to dig on bands from that era that I’ve never heard of.

The Police make me bored as well. Never got into them. Rush - I think ought to make the top 13. In an interview with Eddie Van Halen the journalist asked:"So what is it like being the greatest guitarist in rock and roll". Eddie replied "I don't know, you'll have to ask Alex Lifeson that question". The musicianship, music, and lyrics has always been on another level. Not to mention the longevity of the band to stay relevant for so many years. Original and never duplicated.
