100,000 pounds in 1303! To give one an idea of how much that was in the medieval period, let's look at Dover Castle. When it was built circa 1180, it cost just over 7,000 pounds. So there you have it. 🧐🧐

Happy Friday! I am wondering if this is not the origin of the special status of the City of London in the evolution of finance and securities as capital investment and the "adventuring" (read piracy, because what's a good story without pirates?) aspect of the British Empire as opposed to the plodding and resourceful mercantile infrastructure of the Dutch Confederacy. Medieval commerce is marvelous to behold.

@TheHistoryGuyChannel6 ай бұрын
@@Jameson1776 the ads are not tied to my channel. Not everyone gets the same ads. Adsense actually customizes them to you, and for some reason, thinks that you are a good target. If you are a viewer, you know that I am not a political creator. But, again, this is my job. I cannot afford to shut off ad revenue. So in a few days a "short" will appear and WON'T be watched by me. Seems many (all?) are required (?) to make these. Why?
@frenzalrhomb69196 ай бұрын
They're not "required" to make shorts, but the reason they do, is that it helps give exposure to the video and the channel, plus it will help push your content up overall with the "Almighty Algorithm."
@TheHistoryGuyChannel6 ай бұрын
The shorts are intended as teasers to bring people to the video. The short will catch some who missed the original video. I did not prefer that KZbin chose to go with shorts. But they did, and it would be foolish of me to ignore them.
@bartsanders15536 ай бұрын
@@TheHistoryGuyChannelIt's quite the needle to thread. The algorithm is very fickle about how it effects new exposures. Most people who watch the long form will skip the shorts and most people who watch shorts will skip the long form. It ends up reading this as disinterest from both groups and tends to squash new engagement. Several creators have seen a drastic drop off after starting to use shorts and then a gradual recovery after the stop making them.
@frenzalrhomb69196 ай бұрын
@TheHistoryGuyChannel When you say "I didn't prefer that KZbin chose to go with shorts . . ." Did you mean that they make the shorts and you sing off on it? Or do you still have to "make the shorts yourself, but feel or felt that you were somewhat forced to" at the cost of extra time and effort in the production process of each video, I suppose, but do you feel that the whole decision was "forced upon you by the platform itself, and the way that the "Almighty Algorithm" is configured, would otherwise have left you at a major disadvantage with your competition, over time?"
@frenzalrhomb69196 ай бұрын
@TheHistoryGuyChannel I apologize for my overly verbose communication style. It's just the way I am I suppose, mate. I do TRY to keep a lid on it, but the more I want to "keep it in" the more it just keeps gushing forth . . See what I mean? Hopeless, bloody hopeless!! . 🤣
