Interesting and well-argued. Just a nitpick: Twelve spent 27 years on Darillium with River Song... I'd hardly call that a-sexual!
@BWHERE4 жыл бұрын
The fact that they didn't even kiss at the end of the episode, with someone as sexual as River, implies to me that 12 just doesn't swing that way. Plus when Missy kissed him, he basically had a panic attack. But obviously it's up to interpretation.
@rosemarypaul60934 жыл бұрын
I believe it was 24 years. But yeah, but for all we know they could have just played canasta or something. Just think, (gee, no matter what I say next is NOT going to sound erotic but), of him going rigid or standing firm, when Clara swooped on him at the end of Deep Breath and he did the same when Missy locked her Hoover lips on him in Dark Water. But, looking at his behavior after River Song, he became easier to touch. I believe Clara had something to do with that as he gladly accepted her hug at the end of "The Woman Who Lived". Although that look he gave Clara after the hug broke my heart. It was like he knew she was going to leave him soon.

@@daveshrum1749 thanks for the tip. Recently I've been hearing more and more terms on sexuality than I've knew to exist let alone heard in my life. The terms themselves are confusing, thus confusing me even more. I understand each one separately, but together as a a description of a person, blew my mind. Maybe I am getting too old for the new "Woke Folks"

Big part of the problem, in my view is something most people don't touch upon. Jodie seems to have brought the Broadchurch modern mom with her. Near identical haircut, side parting, same length, similar necklines... (same costume designer too, who took her inputs for costume again). That role had her shutting down on emotions a lot. Same showrunner. She didn't watch previous Doctors and apparently Chris liked it like that. She basically took too long to get into the character and still doesn't seem to have fully settled into it. She doesn't know the basic things about the Doctor that say... David Tennant or Peter Capaldi did as long time fans. Or any other fans. The haunting awareness of the loss of Gallifrey that never fully goes away and will come up when situations trigger it. It doesn't haunt her because she hasn't immersed in the story beond the scripts and backgrounds provided. Someone should have told her to imagine Danny died on Gallifrey. Much criticism has happened of shows, but a simple example is in one of her interviews answering fan questions. Someone asks her if the Doctor has a bedroom on the TARDIS. She was sure there was a bedroom, but most fans would remember the newly regenerated Peter's unforgettable scene from his first episode where he is perplexed by the idea of a room to be asleep in. Getting into character is a nuanced thing and not watching previous Doctors turned her into an IGNORANT Doctor. One too arrogant to learn from white men or cater to the white male gaze or something I suppose. She simply lacks awareness of FACTS. Her interpretation of the Doctor as a hesitant person seeking the affection/approval of companions is bizarre. Every Doctor has actively asked companions - it is literally modus operandi. Usually with the temptation of adventure, but Peter Capaldi did it by sharing vulnerability and a need for Clara's presence and support. She portrays an insecure modern woman seeking the inclusion/approval of colleagues (in her own TARDIS! - It doesn't get more doormat than that), she's an alien who has been with amazing people over and over and will, again and again, no matter how this question gets answered - she's got this. But she didn't know that. And that hesitation is everywhere. She simply doesn't plunge into challenge and take charge and fails to impact situations as the Doctor does and stands there chattering to her fam about what is going on what she will do... and shuts up when it comes to emotional connect (or worse is uncaring). She ends up doing less, because she's talking about what's going on, analyzing it, what she will do.... Chris Eccleston - grabs Rose's hand "Run". Run first explanation later. BOOM, just like that. Show is revived. David Tennant starts talking - oh, new teeth... "Barcelona" "Merry Christmas" defeat tree, wake up, disarm villain, figure out situation, reunite with companions, disable first threat, challenge villain, suffer loss of hand, but look it regenerates... to win the day "I'm that sort of a man". And he freaking slept for most of that episode! Matt Smith figuring out what food he likes, investigating Amelia's crack in the wall, taking TARDIS out on a test run and returning after 12 years to a completely new dynamic with Amy, but same villain and a situation out of control triggered by their changed dynamic. wins the day, recalls fleeing alien to threaten and dismiss again Peter Capaldi's amusing word salad, then confusions, then off on his own investigating dinosaur murder before he's fully coherent.... They DID shit. There was energy and it was so charismatic, I didn't need to look up the details to compare. They didn't need to explain what was going on. They handled it and provided any explanations needed after they were needed. Many things didn't need explanations. Even the Doctor's tendency to engage in or avoid romance seems steeped in pain avoidance rather than asexuality. As he tells Rose, he can't spend his life with her. The curse of the Time Lords. He is able to let loose with River in ways he couldn't with Rose, yet the first place he thought to leave his human clone was with her, because he would age and die with her. Various doctors have shown affection or flirted to various degrees, but committing to another person was either a historic accident or with someone he could be with for a long time. Jodie looks like she'll either fall for Yaz or "Bury your gays" her with last series already over and just specials left. Much as the writing is bad, Jodie DID NOT DO HER HOMEWORK.

This is why Jodie's incarnation failed because they didn't decide what kind of archetype her doctor should have. No these idiots did the lazy thing, just plopped a woman on screen told us that's we're getting and called it a day... Even the graphics and music soundtrack is boring. There's no excitement when I hear the show start. The best graphics and soundtrack in my opinion was 12's, especially the one with the electric guitar in it. It clearly said that this was a different doctor, a space hobo haunted by his past, the ones he loved and lost and trying to teach the pudding head humans and aliens through his own experiences that there is a better way. The 11th Doctor and the 12th Doctor both gave emotional and absolutely heartbreaking speeches on loss and the stupidity of war. Who could ever forget 12's anti-war speech in the "Zygon Inversion"? "When you fire that 1st shot you have no idea how many people are going to die. How many children will scream and burn. How many lives will be shattered how many hearts will be broken until everybody does what they should have done from the beginning, SIT DOWN AND TALK!" Or 11's speech to the big sun alien in Akhaten? Chibnall just doesn't know how to write emotion. You want to write a story so good that people will stop what they're doing to watch it. I had not found a story like that since 13 started in the role. There was such a huge change her 1st season, the soundtrack, the graphics, the Doctor, not just the regeneration, but the sex of the Doctor and the head writer/show runner. Maybe it was too much at one time, but most of us could have looked past that if the storytelling and characters had engaged us instead of making us feel we were watching something other than Doctor Who. Can Chibnall turn this around? I don't know. I agree that the show had fallen flat before and came back. I just hope it won't take another 15 year cancellation period?

I feel like a good motivation for Ryan would be the fact that the Doctor has a time machine- he could use it to bring Grace back, but he has to win the Doctor's trust to do so. His character arc could be him learning to get over Grace's death and to accept Graham as his grandpa
@raconbacon56493 жыл бұрын
Then there could be a scene where the doctor explains about fixed points in time and how they shouldnt be changed. The fact that 13 says the companions are her 'fam' demonstrates everything wrong with the writing for the doctor. The nuance and character of the doctor is gone. “The Woman Who Fell to Earth” and “It Takes You Away” did show us some type of regret from her past. “It Takes You Away” especially capitalized on it. I believe what you are getting at is the lack of the regrets communicated to the companions. The Doctor always shared their regrets with the companions solidifying their friendship; even in the classic series before the Time War. That is my reason why it feels fake, the companions know nothing about the Doctor. They know she had a family with a bunch of grandmothers but that is all. The companions not knowing anything worked with the First Doctor because Ian, Barbara, Polly, and Ben were accidental travelers who wanted to go home. Vicki, Steven, and Sara had just got out of traumatic situations and needed to find places to stay with situations that needed solutions. Katarina and Dodo were lackluster companions because they blindly trusted the Doctor. Blind trust is what kills me with the current companions. Katarina and Dodo were the only other companions to blindly trust the Doctor and that lead to Katarina’s death and Dodo’s mind control. The companions do not necessarily need a reason to travel with the Doctor but they definitely need reasons to trust the Doctor. These three have none and the Doctor has actually given them reasons why they should not trust her. Let us go back in time to Romana. In her first incarnation, she neither trusted him nor took him seriously. She never considered staying with him after their mission was over until he showed her that he would rather fail the mission than let an innocent person die. When she regenerated we saw that she was comfortable traveling and trusting him. That is how I measure the Doctor. I cannot say I see Romana traveling or trusting Thirteen. In fact, I cannot see any other companion doing that; not even Susan.

An interesting and thoughtful presentation. Jodie and her co-stars are all good actors - they just haven't been given much material worthy of their talents. That being said, there have been some good character moments: Graham's internal conflict in Rosa, when he says "No, no, no, I don't want to be part of this" - he values what Rosa will do, he just doesn't want to be part of the problem she's taking a stand against. I also think the Thirteenth Doctor's heart-to-heart with King James was good - there is a moment where I thought she'd got through to him and he'd release her. I'd be interested in your analysis of Classic Who characters - perhaps a more fruitful and personally rewarding avenue for your obvious talent as a good critic. After all, we have 50+ years of Who that can be viewed and reviewed.

Matt Smith was good because of his trying to find his favorite food. Capaldi wasn't sealed for me as the Doctor, until Mummy on the Orient Express. Though once Bill became his companion, I couldn't watch it anymore, both the doctor and the companion lost character traits. Doctor started losing character traits before hand, but with Bill, all I know about her is "Black Female Lesbian..." and that's it. Nothing sticks out with her. I tried watching Jodi's doctor... Doctor seriously lost character traits. Her only character trait: Female's are strong and never sad...

There has always been a darker part to the Doctor. In the very first adventure he was prepared to kill a caveman, and his attitude to Ian and Barbara was very hostile. There is a line in Dalek Invasion of Earth where he says “I never take life - except when my own is threatened!” While his experiences softened the character so that he mourned (briefly) the loss of Katarina in the Dalek Master Plan, he was still hard enough that Stephen was arguing with him over the death of Sarah Kingdom, and later after the Massacre of St Bartholomew Stephen was ready to leave because the Doctor was non committal over the women they had met during that adventure who may have been killed: the arrival of Dodo Chaplet was a thin way of suggesting that she survived and Dodo was a distant relative! The second Doctor too could be manipulative - as in Tomb of the Cybermen, something which came back with the McCoy Doctor in Silver Nemesis, where the Doctor destroyed the cyberfleet, and Mat Smith’s Doctor who blew up another fleet just to get their attention. In fact the Doctor was so scary he was the one being the daleks were afraid of! This aspect was less apparent with the third and fourth doctors - Pertwee wanted to make peace with the Silurians and Tom Baker agonised about touching two wires together to end the Daleks forever “do I have that right?” he said. Peter Davidson’s doctor could not find it him to kill Davros - but the death and destruction all around him was enough to make Tegan temporarily leave the Tardis. Let’s not forget that Colin Baker met the Valyard - an amalgamation of the all the dark sides of his own personality, and while Paul McGann’s Doctor refused initially to take any part in the Time War - and opposed the Time Lords, the War Doctor was prepared to use the ultimate weapon to wipe out both sides! We can speculate that the events of the Time War strengthened the dark side of the Doctor: Christopher Eccleston’s doctor was damaged, Tennant raved about his power in Waters Of Mars, and by the time we got to Matt Smith and A Good Man Goes To War we were told that ‘doctor’ in many civilisations meant ‘mighty warrior’. Regeneration may ‘shake up the brain cells a little’, but should not be able to wholly obliterate the underlying personality the way this Doctor is written and portrayed - by an actress who unlike many previous holders of the part, did no research into the role she was to play.

The first original team with ian, susan and barbara is a prime example of how engaging a tardis team can be when the character dynamics are well fleshed out and written. Counter-argument: Ryan loved his Grams, and she loved Graham. She tries to get Ryan to appreciate Graham more before she dies, Ryan mistakes this gesture of attempted good faith as a dying wish to have them work together to grieve properly. Yas, on the other hand, cares about her job, yes, but also has a huge crush on Ryan. As for the Doctor being out of place as the Doctor: I actually think her being another person actually makes a lot of sense. I mean, just look at The Timeless Children. The sudden revelation of her being the original “Time Lord” with unlimited lives greatly conflicts with the end of Matt Smith’s time as the Doctor. He ended up getting a resupply of lives. But, if the Master’s hypothesis is correct, not only would the regenerations shared with the Doctor be unnecessary, but could possibly be rejected by the Doctor’s form because of the fact that the original true Galifreyian had supposedly an infinite number of regenerations. But, hey, that’s just a theory.

Loving your videos!! And I guess that the only thing that makes 13 different to other incarnations is that she is just Female, which really sucks. Because there is still similarity between each 13 and the rest and that being, they are humanoid. I do agree as well with the fact that there is no character development at all! It's like previous companions, I would want them to keep going on this brilliant journey because I feel I can connect with them, I feel like myself and the companion are sharing the same dream, the same goals and feeling the same fear and the need for adventure. I don't feel like that with Ryan, Graham and Yaz, because there is barely any emotion with them making the experience relatable to the viewers. Also even-though Ryan's mum died in the first episode (which I thought could have happened way later on in the series so that emotion will grow with each of the characters), I would have wanted other close friends or family of the companions to possibly die or come to near death experiences to help develop their character and make it harder for them to keep their emotions in. But as you have said and what is still true to this day, Chris Chibnall is a terrible storyteller when it comes to being a showrunner. He has ruined the entire foundation of what Doctor Who was, hopefully now Russel T Davis will be able to say that maybe the events of "The Flux" and "The Timeless Child" thing was created because the Celestial Toymaker was morphing his/her history. Now that would make it more interesting, like what if it's something leading up to reveal that The Doctor is just a pawn in someones game but the game player is cheating and rewriting the path that The Doctor goes down and rewriting everything they ever knew. But then again, if they did that it would make the events of "The Flux" totally pointless, or would it?? As you can tell, I am always up for a Doctor Who conversation or debate

Just yesterday I saw a brief video of Whittaker's performance in Antigone. She was terrific, powerful, almost scary. Meaning she can act as hell. Nothing in the show though is giving her the chance to do so. Chibnall is writing her as a quirky genius kid, not an old being exhausted by immortality. Plus I also saw that he actively told Whittaker to NOT research anything about the role. Basically he told her to perform the doctor characters as he writes it, not as the actress understands it.

That's so on point! Jodie Whittaker is a great actress and she does the best she can do with this really bad writing. And the problem is definitley not the Doctor being a woman, Missy was just amazing. I think it would have been better for the show not becoming this popular, or at least if the writers wouldn't care about it's popularity that much. Now they are trying to make it all fun and easy and political correct in a really weird way (I love when shows and movies take care about political correctness, but doing it that way actually just hurts the cause, because it's so obvious that they are just doing it for publicity and not because they really care and it's so bad written). This way it's just not the Doctor anymore. I was so happy when I heard that the next Doctor is going to be a woman because of what they did with the Master and Missy and because it really was time for that, and it even fits the fan theories about the Doctor subconsciously choosing his next form fitting with all of what he experienced before his regeneration, but all they did was giving the sexists munition for saying the Doctor should have stayed a man.

This video is the best summation of everything wrong with the show. I can live with uneven scripts, some mild retconning, a nonsensical sonic screwdriver, and a crystal TARDIS, if the Doctor wasn’t such a passive ghost of a character. In Spyfall 1, a security dude with a gun tells her to go back in the house so he can handle the monster AND SHE MEEKLY OBEYS! I was hoping against all evidence that Season 12 would be an improvement but that moment killed it. Eccleston, Tennant, Smith, and Capaldi all established their characters very quickly, but Whittaker has had two seasons and is still a cipher. The problem isn’t that she’s a woman - it’s that she isn’t a person. She is the most anti feminist character on tv today.

I think the problem is both the writing and Whittaker I feel she’s miscast she just isn’t putting anything unique into it.

There is a way to square this circle, merging the old into the new. If We have The Doctor's mother being human, then if the Endless Child was found as child the DNA would be half and half that would confuse Techtuen but she would recognise that some of the DNA was similar to her own so she would know she could splice it into her own and the rest of the planet. It is known on Earth that if Lion and Tigress have a cub then they will have offspring that are twice as large the parents as the lion doesn't care the size limiting gene but lioness does, while tigers are the other way round. If the Doctor is a Hybrid, then maybe he doesn't carry the regeneration limiter gene but never knew it because the Division\ Celestial Intervention Agency tampered with his memory, they have done it in the past making him forget how to build a demat circuit. The Doctor in the original pilot said he was from the far future, So the Endless child could have fallen through a time schism or got lost on a trip from the future and found by Techteun. As for being Endless they stopped trying to kill him, we don't know for a fact he\she is if she was and travelled endlessly ever point in space would be a Doctor so we have to assume an end. As for 8 he didn't need to regenerate he didn't die in the crash, he just felt he needed to control his regeneration.

It’s not Whittaker, it’s Chibnall, his weiting is absolutely stupid and Series 12 got worse by the Timless Children
