Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’re going to be ranking the 15 most EVIL dark witches and wizards in the Harry Potter universe. Names like Voldemort, Grindelwald and Bellatrix may come to mind- but can you name the other 12? Things to bear in mind here are that I’m not ranking them by POWER- but instead, how sinister and evil they are. A lot of dark witches and wizards didn’t even make the list, so if you’ve got a list of your own I’d love for you to comment it down below. Also be sure to let me know what you think of MY list. I think the reason Salazar hated muggleborns so much at the time was because of the witch hunts, and muggleborn wizards to him, might be traitors that would expose and attempt to hunt them too. So maybe he had the Basilisk as a sort of Slytherin guardian to protect Hogwarts (like the stone guards).

I was just thinking: what if, much like Voldemort splitting his soul in order to create his many Horcruxes, the Dementors that Ekrizdis had either intentionally or unintentionally created were, in fact, fragmented pieces of their creator's own soul, which was subsequently ripped apart countless times over. And if each and every one of the Dementors were to merge together until only a singular entity remained - thereby inducing Ekrizdis' return.

I was expecting at least one Malfoy from the past would be on the list. One of Draco's ancestors had hexed Queen Elizabeth I when she didn't choose him to be her consort, while another had murdered his muggle tenants during the Black Death.

The Malfoys hit me as being more mean rich kids than actually evil. Lucius certainly didnt do his family name justice if that wasnt the case historically though. I'd almost consider Wormtail more evil than Lucius Malfoy since Wormtail at least betrayed his best friends to their killer for no other reason than "Voldemort was stronger". Lucius seems like he joined because "Well all the other cool kids were doing it!"

Lucius could've resurrected the dark Lord too but he was happy to just forget about him and continue living in luxury he didn't go to him until he was called. I think they went into it thinking that it was going to be like a muggleborn and muggle hate club, but never expected that he'd have to get his hands dirty.

Unpopular opinion: Dumbledork should be on this list. He was reformed (" ") dark wizard that become head of Hogwarts, and BFF of snape, and during his time as wizard: got wood for the Deathlly hallows to the point it put his family in danger, pre-meditated murder of harry so that snape (or so had hoped I guess) just so that snape can finally bitch slap that wingy bitch Tom Riddle. Yeah how did that _not_ make dumblefail dark? and I haven't seen or read the prologue/prequals.

@@gorkskoal9315 You, my friend, have an incredibly basic view of the term "Evil". Grindlewald was actually Lawful Evil because of his evil acts being drivin by a "For the Greater Good" mentality. Albus Dumbledor on the other hand, while sharing that mentality, was Lawful Neutral due to the fact that there were lines even he wouldnt cross. The Prophecy was clear that only Harry could kill Voldemort and vis versa. So Dumbledor prepaired Harry for what he would have to do. Grooming =/= premeditated murder.

Herpo the Foul was also known as the first person to create a Horcrux, and is also believed to have created other dark spells.

Actually creating a Horcrux is something most Dark Wizards and most Dark Witches don't have what it takes to do or are very uncomfortable doing. And the ones who tried to do so usually risked dying as well. Herpo the Foul and Tom Marvolo Riddle, aka Lord Voldemort, were the exceptions that proved the rule.

Ekrizdis also terrorized much of the Isles for decades. Wantonly slaughtering any in his path. I also think the Dementors were muggles once, but through torture and experimentation shifted them into those things, and possibly based the soul eating thing off of vampires.

Have to admit, I did expect Owle Bullock to be on the list. Having released Secrets of the Darkest Art, a book pushing the boundaries and experiments of dark magic, and discovering (expanding on?) Herpo the Foul's horcrux creation long after Herpo the Foul's known lifetime. Also implanting this book in a school for children to discover, prompting and encouraging (recruiting) curious students (like Tom Riddle) to learn and experiment with the Dark Arts. Owle Bullock at least deserves a mention I think!

I would have put Fenrir Greyback on this list for his sadism, Slytherin probably less high up the list and Bellatrix a bit higher. As far as I know, Slytherin never attacked "mudbloods" when he was alive (even though being against teaching them is properly evil in its own right) and through the Chamber of Secrets only killed one person (and that was when Voldemort commanded the basilisk). Bellatrix' enjoyment of torturing people is so evil she should be higher up in my opinion. Great list, great video!

My only criticism is Morgana being so low. I would think being probably the strongest person this list necessarily meant she was the most steeped in the dark arts or one of the most and as such in my opinion should have made it to the top 6.

Despite the obvious fact that dark arts are not good, I felt reading the books that there was a taboo in the UK about anything related to the dark arts that I didn't quite like. How can Hogwarts teach Defence against the Dark Arts without some information about the dark arts? How can you know about defeating an opponent if you don't learn about them? I'm thinking about the light and dark side of the Force from Star Wars, and how although those two sides always fourght against each other in the form of Jedi vs Sith, it was ultimately the Jedi's narrow-minded suppression of any dark elements and negative emotions in themselves and their world that led to their downfall. Only when Rey, the diad in the force, who acknowledged both sides, was there a true balance. Shouldn't it work the same way in magic? Darkness, death, evil, destruction, hate, anger, etc. will always be present in the world but they have to be balanced equally every day by the light: kindness, hope, peace, love, respect. How can you know truly how deep the darkness goes unless you venture inside? But that doesn't mean you get sucked into the darkness, you just have to make sure you walk through it keeping a candle burning to light your way. I'm all for throwing away this view of defeating darkness by denying it. It is ignorance that leads you to a path of destruction, but knowledge can give you the power to chose what path you take.

Promises of power, for the most part I think. Yaxley became a high ranking authority figure in the Ministry. Snape became Hogwarts Headmaster. Not to mention what any part of his knowledge could be used for. A snippet of information for a man thinking as big as Voldemort could be a game changer for someone with a more simplistic goal.

How would events of changed if Voldemort destroyed the Horcrux in GOF within Harry at tail end of graveyard scene? (Impact on Arthur Weasley attack, Sirius fake vision, later visions, etc) Also, if Voldemort specifically gave Pettigrew a new hand, and had Pettigrew’s blood in him as well after GOF, then why was the hand able to kill him in Malfoy Manor? Finally, if Voldemort never killed Snape, then how and when would Snape of turned back to the “good guys”?

I think voldemort would've ruled if he destroyed the horcrux in Harry at the graveyard . He managed to fool Harry a few times with the visions however in a lot of cases it was to Harry's advantage that he was a horcrux. Also voldemort was at full power then so it's possible that he would've killed Harry too, one of the biggest factors why it hurt him so much that Harrys horcrux was destroyed in the last book was because most of the horcruxes were destroyed by then so he was already weak, but if the horcrux he destroyed inside Harry was the first one and he had the remaining 6 then he would be still powerful possibly powerful enough to kill Harry too after he destroyed the horcrux inside him. But going back if the visions didn't happen I think sirius would've lived for a while but then probably died later on during the battle.

How can Slytherin be so high up on the list? it was a different time back then muggles were hunting wizards, so he didn't trust muggleborns. But I'm sure he wasn't more evil than Grindelwald?

Salazar Slytherin was definitely a sore loser since he wanted only Pureblooded Wizards and Witches to join Hogwarts, and Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, and Rowena Ravenclaw disagreed and chose to include Halfblooded Wizards and Witches, Squib-Born Wizards and Witches, and Muggle-Born Wizards and Witches. Still, Slytherin's descendant Gormlaith Gaunt deserves to be on this list since her hate crimes also prompted her niece Isolt Sayre to flee to The Colonies. Isolt and the Muggle James Steward married, took in brothers Chadwick Boot and Webster Boot, and had twin daughters of their own -- the Squib Martha and the Halfblooded Rionach -- and opened The Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Gormlaith deserved her fate when she showed up in The Colonies and nobody was sorry that she was dead.

Consequences matter so ranking grindelwald so low cause he believed what he did was for the greater good is a bit weird. Def. One of the more evil wizards given the consequences of his behavior.

Not sure you need to. I guess it comes to how you cope with your memories. I'll bring in another universe, Star Wars. In the expanded universe, a part of Sith teachings is how to handle scars of the past they teach you to either turn them into lessons, or a source of rage, the latter used as a motivational boost. As this is brought in from actual human emotions, this teaching may as well be present (although not through Hogwarts lessons) in the wizarding world. If you take your sorrow and think of it as a lesson, it decreases the pain that comes from it, so Dementors can't use it against you. Dementors are, according to Rowling, a metaphor for depression. If we take this and consider defending against them the same way as we cure depression, it works. At least, it did for me.
