As an old retired Marine small arms/marksmanship instructor, the free floated, mid-length gas, 16” barrel with LVPO would have been a better replacement for the A2 /A4 than the M4.
@fortusvictus829717 күн бұрын
M4 was because of the increase in MOUT during the GWOT (especially Iraq) and just how many in the military only carry as a formality because they never leave the base. M4 is great for getting into and out of vehicles as the most action the primary weapon ever sees.

I agree with this! I had no issues doing CQB/CQC or MOUT (whatever the kids call it now) with a 20" M16A2. Its all I knew. It was around, but I never got to qualify with or carry an M4 before I retired. BUT I can certainly see its benefits in close encounters, but without a suppressor it would be brutal.. I have shot plenty of 14.5, 10", and I own an 8" AR Pistol. without a suppressor they are almost useless. And the 16" M27 with a suppressor is longer than an A2 so what's the point? Never mind the weight of the damn thing. I now have personal 16" AR's that with the collapsible stock feel like what I would call a "Carbine". Now, with the new SIG Light Machine gun (If the USMC adopts it) the entire reason for getting rid of the SAW and going to the M27 is a non starter.....I really think the 16" is a great all around rifle . @@donwyoming1936 Lol, this comment sounds just like the old dudes that swore anything shorter than 20" was garbage. Now here we are years later where 20" rifles are just range toys for the most part. I think a big reason is the advancement of ammo powder charges. 16" vs 20" Muzzle velocity isn't that big of a difference with modern loadings. Personally I am in the 16" camp as well, I just thought your comment was funny from a nostalgia stand point. I like other lengths for different reasons. 77 grain ammo doesn't take as big of a velocity hit that the 55grain stuff does so barrel length is more forgiving. Other than prior service, US Army or USMC vets, trying to teach holdoff or windage was impossible. The majority were college educated and had very little to no experience in firearms and really didn't care. A great example of a 'do-it-all' or 'go-to' rifle. Good quality and reliable. Slick and practical, not fancy. BCM promoted meeting or exceeding mil-spec AR/M4 rifles from the start. Consistent standards and QC. A replacement for the old "A, B, C" manufacturers mentioned. They were driven by the decline of old Colt with multiple bankruptcy issues and restructures. Colt lowered their standards and stopped making mil-spec rifles. So BCM stepped in to fill that void. (31:43) Check the Max Range conversion: 650 yards = 594 meters on my calculator. In the AR15 platform, a good barrel, preferably freefloated, and good ammunition are the primary requirements for good mechanical accuracy. The other stuff that people spend money on are primarily for looks, bragging rights, feel, longevity, human interaction. If that rifle has 10k rounds through it then it is doing very well. An AR barrel that starts off with high accuracy will usually fall off a lot by 5k rounds, opening up to 2 or 3 MOA.

The new A B and C are probably Aero, BCM, and you could still say Colt but I’d argue for Centurion.

Another great Vidja…… i have this exact build just with a Criterion Core barrel, vs the stock BCM barrel. I would like to see you do a range run with a LMT 308 or 6.5 CM. Even one of their 16” 556 would be interesting. They do make military style weapons……

Personally my front sight obscures a paper target at 50yds. I have a solution that works for me. A 20 inch AR has a great sight picture from 300-600yds depending on your eyesight. The front sight post on a 20 inch is .72 and in order to match the sight picture on a carbine length you will need a .52. And if a .52 size match front sight is used on a 20 inch than a .34 will mimic that on a carbine length. All those sizes come in the kns pack. The taper of the kns might mess with some people’s minds so they might look at other brands that are squared off or perfectly round.

I took my BCM build out to CMP south, 100 to 300 was stupid easy with my Holosun red dot and Juliet micro combo. 600 I had no idea where to hold over. One of the RSOs told me "put the dot on the middle of the stall number downrange" and lo and behold within 10 rounds I had the 3 shot grouping to get my card punched, using PMC bronze 223. I love my BCM rifle

I’m shooting the BCM 16” 410 1/8 barreled upper and a 14.5” BCM ELA CHF 1/7 . I’ve noticed both shoot slightly better 100 yard groups with 69 grain match rather than 77 grain. It’s consistent enough across the different match ammo to be noticeable. Not what I was expecting.
@garenosborn17 күн бұрын
A couple of years ago i took my bcm 16" goverment profile mid length rifle to an NRA high power match. Its got a bcm milspec si gle stage trigger, maybe 7# pull, a midwest 2 piece mlok rail. I put a gen 1 viper pst 1-4 on it and a mlok fixed front sling swivel (so i could use a service rifle sling) and just showed up with a few boxes of 55gr frontier 5.56 and my 30 year old high power shooting coat. Rifle and ammo certainly werent optimal but i didnt place last and a few months later the nra sent me a sharpshooter card based on that one match. Next match i attended i had a custom 20" rifle build and shot even better. I dont really have much use for a barrel shorter than 16" especially in 5.56. others do im sure, so they have a place, just not with me.
@DriveCarToBar17 күн бұрын
100% agree. If you need a shorter barrel, there are other calibers that maintain their terminal performance a lot better than 5.56 out of a short barrel. If I were to put together something with a short barrel in the neighborhood of 12", 6.8SPC would be my choice. I'm debating doing exactly that; sending in a Form 1 on my existing ZRODelta lower and slapping on a 12.5" 6.8 SPC upper. Then pick up something that's not an AR like a PSA JAKL just for cheap 5.56 funsies.

I remember when BCM first hit the scene. American Rifleman did a piece about their rifles called “The Dirty Dozen” IIRC talking about how well they ran even after thousands of rounds uncleaned. They have now affectively replaced Colt as the basic mid priced milspec+ brand to go with. From there you step up to Geiselle, DD, or LWRC.
@terrarecon16 күн бұрын
I don't feel like DD is that much of a step up, not because they aren't quality, but because BCM is already there in terms build of quality and accuracy. Everything else is extra bells and whistles.

This is right along with how my journey went in 2014??....I think. I put together a 14.5" BCM upper with parts ordered and got an Aero lower with DPMS LPK. Magpul grip and butt stock and put on a cheap red dot. Local shop had a Rise Armament Super Sport trigger since the LPK's didn't come with triggers back then. A few years later I discovered 3-gun locally. Swapped to a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6 and each year I think between practicing, testing reloads, and monthly competitions at two separate gun ranges, I'd have to think there is 15k-ish rounds through that gun. It still has a normal regular charging handle too. But I have a different on the way currently. I had two buddies recently purchase their first black guns. One of those buddies, of course, went wild with the mods and has doubled the the original purchase price of his Black Rain Fusion. Anyway, I think he bought the Radian Raptor handle. It's super nice. So I'm going to try the Breek Sledgehammer. The other buddy has only changed his flash hider to a brake and his charging handle to the Aero Breach. His rifle is the Live Free Armory Battle Lite 556. I like it so much that I plan to get one soon. They are an incredible value.

To me, less than 16", you almost need to run a suppressor - which makes it longer than 16". So, it's either 16" without or 13-14 with suppression. My 551SB with ACOG is pretty effective out to about 550m/600yds - barrel length is 353mm (14.3")

No matter what the internet says BCM is still very high quality. People who constantly refer to them as midtier don't understand what makes something high tier or low tier. They think extra features are what set a rifle apart. Theoretically sure, but if a manufacturer isn't consistent in their ability to manufacture the added features then it ain't worth a hill of beans. If the rifle isn't really available and you have to pay multiple times the MSRP then its also not really that impressive imo. BCM simply offers a true "milspec+" rifle. It uses the well known milspec materials, coatings and dimensions and includes a few added niceties like an mlok rail(or quad rail or even keymod still), they also have different buffer lengths(A5 or standard), etc.

@mavrikmavrik303211 күн бұрын
Unless you have a really high end barrel the “accuracy” of the rifle is going to be impacted greatly by the rounds you shoot. Yes you can use 55gr range ammo to hit full sized targets at 400+ yards but using that ammo for rifle testing at distance is useless as the ammo is going to drive too much of the result. Besides you can get AAC 75 and 77 grain match rounds for nearly the same price as range ammo now and they are hella accurate out of mid tier barrels.
@bengarcia109111 күн бұрын

Where these rifles shine is that you can buy just the upper and put together a mil-spec lower with your choice of trigger. Most of the party happens in the upper anyways, so "cheaping out" on the lower isn't going to hurt the rifle nearly as much as on the upper.

I don't think you even need to spend $1,400 or whatever on a BCM to get that level of performance and durability these days. I think you can get it for $900-$1,000. And if you build it yourself, you can do it for like $750. It's all about the barrel and the bolt-carrier more than anything else.
