The two most shocking ones that come to mind first are the Chargers with the #1 offense and #1 defense... like how was their special teams so bad that they missed the playoffs??? And then the 11-5 Patriots. Yeah they didn't have Brady, but 11 wins and missing the playoffs is just wild

that's why the American playoff system sucks, and the European point system is better. But that's also why the American Playoff is so exciting and the European sometimes is boring. Playoffs encourage mediocrity and tanking (because of no relegation) and sometimes bad teams making the playoffs over great like Washington in 2019, while the other system is too weird, I saw a documentary the other day about Man City where they won the premier league while just being on a plane or playing golf they weren't even watching the other match and it was so anticlimactic.
@Ballardgeonte
@Ballardgeonte Жыл бұрын
@@WillXtinger yeah see that's why the points system is weak because some teams can front run and the other teams can cancel eachother out meaning the champ is known early on. Football is the best playoff format because it's one game and the upsets happen out of nowhere. I wish they kept the college football playoff at 8 teams instead of 12 cuz that's half of the top 25 and it damn near deems rating irrelevant cuz one year a 13-15 team is gonna make the playoffs and they're gonna base it on "strength of schedule" which is a bs metric because no team can choose their schedule nor how good or bad the teams on their schedule will be the year prior or the year they play them. I also love the divisional win format as it puts more stock on the divisional rival games as opposed to focused on how many wins specifically because it allows a teams to focus moreso on the division opponents rather than trying to run the table like they attempt to force the college football teams to do which is so hard

One thing people forget is that the special teams was so bad that the Chargers always had worse field position. So the offense would always have to go 75 yards or further to score so they racked up more yards than other teams. And the defense always started near midfield and gave up less yards overall even when the other team scored. So it was actually these units overcoming the awful special teams that had them at #1 and #2 in the league. Also almost every loss was by one score and included some sort of special teams gaffe that cost them the game.

The 91 Eagles won 10 games with just defense. You'd have to think that if Randall is healthy they win at least 2 more of those games. Especially loses to Tampa where they had to start Brad Goebel & The Saints who they lost to by a TD. Sadly that may have been that teams best chance at a Super Bowl as Keith Jackson left via free agency the next season & they lost Jerome Brown in a tragic auto accident. The team was gutted by free agency and injuries the next two seasons.

It's a shame, that 1991 49ers team really was the best of the Steve Young era. They still had a SB worthy defense and a damn fine offense. It took them a few weeks to find their footing on offense in the Montana to Young transition, but once they did they were a machine. But truly, the one thing that kept Young from guiding them to more SB's was the defenses that they put on the field. They couldn't get to the QB and had questionable CB play. See what happened when they added Deion Sanders, a SB victory.

@@jrad410 The 1995-98 49ers were a mirage. Their offensive line was getting older and more terrible, their running game was touch and go, and their defense was overrated, particularly guys like Merton "Spastic Colon Dance" Hanks (one of the most overrated DB's ever) and Tim McDonald (who should have been moved to LB by then). They played against several bad QB's in that time period (Tony Banks, Danny Wuerffel, Heath Shuler, Craig Whelihan, Mike Tomczak, etc...) .
@astrostar49
@astrostar49 Жыл бұрын
Their 1995 defense was arguably just as strong as their 1994 unit even without Deion. Ricky Watters leaving really shackled the offense though, and by the time Garrison Hearst got going as a 49er, the defense was getting kind of old. Although in 1997 they had a great defense. Honestly though Steve as great as he was, was not the most dominant playoff performer. He had a couple of games where he just couldn't get anything going against quality defenses, and couldn't step up.
@philobeddoe8342
@philobeddoe8342 Жыл бұрын
@@astrostar49 Steve was shackled by a non existent running game for years. An old overrated defense, aside from the DT's. Regular season success was due to the fact they could get out to early leads and just play the pass. Also the NFC West was weak so they could pick up 5 or 6 wins there yearly. During those years in the 90's they mostly didn't have the defense to compete for the SB, but definitely had the offense to beat the also rans. The Cowboys and Packers had monster defenses and Tampa was developing one prior to their SB year. The team was basically Young an old Rice, Brent Jones and a budding TO. Also I do believe the coaching and game planning was very mediocre during this span of time.

Not the top scoring defense, plus their offense was kinda ass. The 49ers scored over 100 points more than the Eagles and gave up less points and didn't make the playoffs either. Also the 49ers beat the Eagles so they had the head to head with both teams missing the playoffs at 10-6.

The 1979 patriots had a solid year, despite missing the playoffs. The pats scored 411 points, 2nd most in the nfl. They had 2 recievers with other 1,000 yards, in harold jackson and stanley Morgan, and qb steve grogan lead the nfl in touchdown passes. New england's defense also featured 57 sacks, and all pro cornerback mike haynes. New england was 8-4 at one point in the season, but 3 straight losses kept them out of the postseason, with a 9-7 record

The Steelers were the first team to beat the Vikings in 2009, the year when Brett Favre took us to the NFC Championship Game. I remember feeling like I knew the winning streak would end because the Steelers always seemed to have our number, insane that they didn't make the playoffs, but they've always seemed to narrowly miss the playoffs after either winning the SB or making a big playoff run, and it's been like that for years and years.

They do indeed. The Steelers can be infuriating, but only because they never hit rock bottom to get the high picks in the draft. Fun fact - the Steelers have not finished last in their division since 1988 when Chuck Noll was the head coach.

Polamalu, the DPOY the very next year, went down to injury and we inexplicably lost 5 straight games, all in fluky, garbage ways. The Chiefs game, well, you saw that "interception" that Heath Miller couldn't grab, the Hail Mary on the final drive against the Raiders, Ben throwing for 350+ yet somehow not scoring a TD against freaking Cleveland, and Ben being injured yet we're teased against the Ravens, who need OT to beat whoever the heck we had at QB (Dennis Dixon was it?). 2009 was infuriating. I have zero doubts the Steelers would've made a deep playoff run had they qualified for the postseason.

My entire experience being a Chargers fan of the Philip Rivers era was just extremely frustrating. Besides the lack of a decent head coach after the 14-2 06' team. There was only ONE MASSIVE ISSUE with the Chargers that had been killing that team for over a decade... Any real Chargers fan will agree with this fact: Special Teams was beyond horrible. Had they had the sense to draft or buy an elite kicker, that'd added multiple wins to probably every year P. RIVERS was the QB. It was disgusting how many games were lost from a missed field goal.

If wild cards existed, Colts would have made it in 67. Also, another pre-wild card team that deserves mention is the 1965 Bears with a rookie Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus. Notably, that team had an above average passer in terms of efficiency in Rudy Bukich unlike most of the quarterbacks for that franchise at the time. Unfortunately, Sayers and Butkus would both never play in a playoff game.

2008 Patriots: Would have won the AFC East and hosted the Ravens in the wild card a year before they actually did (They lost that 33-14. You be the judge.) 2012 Bears: Would have been on the road against Green Bay in the wild card. I think they lose that. 1986 Vikings: Would have been on the road in a rematch against Washington in the wild card. 1986 Seahawks: Wouldn't have won the division over Denver, but would have hosted the wild card round against 10 win teams like the NY Jets and Chiefs (they win that and then lose to Cleveland in the divisional), but on the road against the Bengals, who also missed the playoffs at 10 wins ironically enough (they lose that). 2004 Bills: Would have replaced the Jets as the 5 seed in the AFC and go on the road against the Chargers. If they win that, they then lose to Pittsburgh in the divisional. 1991 Eagles: Would have beaten out Dallas for the 5 seed in the NFC and go on the road against the Bears. They should win that, but who knows, before they lose to the Lions in the divisional round. But if both the 49ers and Eagles made the playoffs over Dallas and Atlanta, Philly is the 6 seed and beats New Orleans on the road before losing to eventual Super Bowl champion Washington. 1978 Chargers: Would have beat out the Oilers for a playoff spot, who made the AFC Championship by beating flawed Miami and New England squads. It's possible the Chargers do the same. 2010 Chargers: Would have won the AFC West over the Chiefs and host the Ravens in the wild card. If they win that, they lose to eventual AFC champion Pittsburgh in the divisional like they did 2 years earlier. 1984 Cardinals: Would have been on the road against the LA Rams. They lost earlier to them in the year 16-13 at home. I don't think much changes there. 2005 Chiefs: Would have beat out the eventual Super Bowl champion Steelers for a playoff spot, changing NFL history. I don't think KC beat the Bengals on the road however, as Carson Palmer's injury wasn't an occurrence that would have happened anyway. It was directly caused by Kimo von Oelhoffen. Plus, the Chiefs defense was terrible unlike the Steelers. 1975 Dolphins: Would have won the AFC East and went on the road against the eventual Super Bowl champion Steelers. Miami definitely loses that. 1985 Broncos: Like the '05 Chiefs, they change NFL history by knocking off the eventual AFC champion Patriots for a playoff spot. I think Denver does beat the Jets on the road in the wild card, but lose to the LA Raiders afterwards, but if they do pull it off with no Jim Plunkett, Denver definitely loses to Miami or Chicago later on. 2009 Steelers: Would have had the 5 seed in the AFC, knocking the Ravens out of the playoffs, and have a 2005-esque playoff run, going on the road against Cincinnati (they win that because Cincy came out flat against the Jets), then San Diego (depends on Nate Kaeding here), then Indianapolis (they lose this). 1989 Redskins: Would beat out the Rams for a playoff spot, who made the NFC Championship, beating division rivals of Washington in Philly and the NY Giants. They could beat Philly, but lost both times in the regular season to the Giants. Washington's defense was better statistically throughout the year than the Rams however, so it's possible to repeat the Rams' success before losing to the legendary '89 49ers in the NFC Championship. But seriously, how the hell do you lose to winless Dallas? 1976 Bengals: Would have knocked the Steelers out of the playoffs (no, seriously...) and beat them for the AFC Central and go on the road against the Colts. They lost to them by 1 in the regular season, so if they beat them here (the Colts were destroyed by Pittsburgh irl, so it's possible), then fans would have died from a plane crash if the Bengals didn't blow them out. Look up Secret Base's video on that if you never knew that. But anyway, they would then lose to eventual Super Bowl champion Oakland in the AFC Championship because they lost to them pretty badly in Week 13. 1991 49ers: Would be the 5 seed in the NFC no matter if the Cowboys, Eagles, or Falcons make it in. Like the 1991 Eagles, I have the Niners beating the Bears on the road in the wild card. Unlike those Eagles, I also think the Niners could beat the Lions on the road in the divisional round if the cards are played right. Unfortunately, the playoff run ends there, as they lose to Washington in the NFC Championship. 1967 Colts: Ok, missing the playoffs with 1 loss is wild, but if they beat the Rams to go undefeated outside of two ties, they go on the road against eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay on their last ride. If they win that (it's possible since the next year would be where they break out), I think Baltimore should cruise from there with wins over Dallas and Oakland to win the NFL Championship and Super Bowl II. Also, the Ice Bowl never happens.

Ugh, I get it. And I’m aware that the description of the 1991 Philadelphia Eagles isn’t an inaccurate one. But to completely dismiss an 8-3 Jim McMahon (7-2 if we’re all being honest and not technical) before he too was nearly killed (literally) behind that very same young and developing offensive line, in favor of the more convenient, no Randall, all defense narrative, isn’t exactly an accurate telling, either. It’s honestly rather unfortunate bordering tragic, but the truth is that Eagles team is one of the NFL’s true, “what if?” mysteries.
