Today we're discussing the Honda ATC model year that had the most variations of any other year, 1985! Old Marty McFly had a great idea when he wanted to get back to that radical year in Back To The Future...
Honda sold 11 different models of three wheeler this year. Only 10 were available in the US. There was one model available outside the US, the 1985 200ES Big Red, which we've discussed in other videos. Felt good to get all these fine ladies together for a photo shoot!
I present to you the class of '85!

In 1985 I mowed so many lawns and bought a lightly used 200X. Took the biggest crash in my life on it and dented my tank up after only owning it for about two weeks. I was devastated and was 15 years old. Recovered and had a great time on that trike for quite a while.

I agree - that was a huge year for everything they did, and rapid change year to year slowed down after that. I would say 1985 was the year they really put things together for motocross bikes and ATV's. The modern machines still reflect the 1985 innovation in many ways still.

Born in ‘71, I remember all of these growing up and rode the 70 as a kid. I made my way to dirt bike MX but always wanted that 200X. That front disc brake and the white/red/blue scheme was just sweet. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. You have some rare gems! We still have our blue ‘71 Z50 I learned on and a green ‘78 Honda Express.

I got my 185s in 1982, had friends that had 70's 90's 110's, 200's 200x's Big Red's...My uncle got a regular 185, in 79 (I had only ridden 110's up to that time) he then got a 250R & eventually even got an Odyssey... I was 12 in 1982, in Northern Tennessee & we lived on these things...I still enjoy them today, they are just different from everything else & surly had their place. I intend to own another one when I have space...Crazy that they canceled them...A friend of mine sells motorsport equip in Michigan said more people are injured or killed on Snowmobiles than Street Bikes, Dirt Bikes, Quads & jet skis combined...I don't know its true but KNOW in Mich. more people have crashed on Snow Machines that 3 wheelers ever....

Up here in Canada, the 200M and 200e are super common. I don't know if it was the price point or the sales pitch, but Honda sold alot of them up here. We didn't have the racing background up here as the states did, it was mostly utility or recreational use like fishing and hunting. When I was first buying them for parts, many were one owner machines and I was told that the dealers ran specials for the 200m and 200e frequently. They were easy to fix in the bush if something went wrong and they had the utility racks needed to get the job done. Funny you mentioned the spotlights, they were common to find up here years ago, but as the used market prices started to increase, they started to become less common. On a final note, the 110 and 125 were also popular, followed by the 200es and 250es & sx as time went on...

My Aunt has a 1985 ATC110 with the Hi/Lo range and auto clutch. That thing was used, abused, left out barely covered usually by a car port. It snows a lot there so it still was loaded with snow and ice. Barely had oil changes, a spark plug or two. Thing still runs, the clutch is spent and it needs starting fluid to start but it runs.

200m was an ideal machine. I have a 200es now and had a 200m for 15 years and wish I had the 200m now. It was lighter, had better forks and didn't have all the big red stuff to deal with and slow it down - but you had to get a rear rack for sure. Went through two sets of sprokets and chains during that time so the maintenance wasn't an issue, but it performed a lot better. The extra 40 lbs in the rear and the shaft drive of the ES with the weak forks make a big difference from an enjoyment point of view if you aren't interested in the utility aspect and are using the trike mostly for transportation.

First I want to say that I'm looking forward to the Trike Fest videos. Second, I have a few thoughts on the 200M. Despite the starting and drive differences, I think that the 1980 185, the 200, the 200E, and the 200ES were basically the same machine. They all used the 12x12-9 tires, similar rear fenders, and similar seats. I feel that the ATC 200 didn't sell very well after the 200E came out. I know that the electric start was very popular. I think that Honda tried to keep the big framed, lower cost utility trikes going by putting the electric start onto the 1983 ATC200 and calling it a 200M. I feel that the fact that 83 was the last year for the 200 and 84 was the first year of the 200M (in the US) tends to back that up. I have nothing to prove what I've said, but it all makes sense to me. Just like manufacturers today, Honda was trying to hit several different price points to appeal to a wider range of buyers.
@ThisOldTrike
@ThisOldTrike 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir! Well, I think you're on to something with the 200M theory, but the 1980 185 and 1981-1983 ATC 200 Chassis is different than the 200M's chassis. It's more like the 82/83 Big Red, with the exception of the front forks which is identical to the 83 200. I agree that they were trying to hit all the price points. I bet they had 82/83 Big Red frames in inventory to use up and opted to make the stripped down utility trike to use them up.

@@ThisOldTrike I agree they were meeting a price point and that it was done to make the 200 more popular when competing with the 200e, and I also think they were trying something, there was a lot of change between 1980-1984 and then things got more stable and consistent when the big 1985 year came and the M had no place, and the now dated 25-inch 200 platform died. It was a smart idea to use the old parts to make a machine with a better purpose. Weird those front forks only ran for three years on the 200 and the M though.

What a great line up of the 1985 ATC lineup! I always wanted to know the true difference between the 250SX and the 250ES as far as where Honda made the changes to make the SX geared higher than the Big Red? It's either in the trans or the rear end. When I was a teenager, me and another boy was messing around and swapped the tires over from his 85 250 SX over to my 85 Big Red and Vise versa, and it made the SX geared really High, and the Big Red was geared crazy low and wind through the gears very fast which was really funny at the time playing around. We never did a top speed with the SX with the Big Red tires. It felt so weird because 3rd gear felt like 5th gear, and it had plenty of power, we just didn't have nowhere to ride that fast. I wonder how fast that SX would go like that?

Have you noticed any model being more stable than another? The reason I ask is because I only drove a 1986 ATC125M and a 1984 ATC110. The 110 always felt much more tippy than the 125. How do they compare to a 185 or the Big Reds? I own a 1984 ATC110 now that I had the engine rebuilt on but it doesn't have racks and I also want more power for work around our land so I'm planning on selling it and getting something else. Just not sure what yet.😉

I had the liquid cooled 250r and 2 200x wish i had the 350 x but the 200x is the best riding most fun bike i ever rode. No need to go so fast you die and its clutch and 5 speed make it a beautiful rider. The 250 scared me the whole time and it didn’t like putting around. It wanted to be opened up all the time or it would load up but the power band would put you in hyper speed and I could barely keep the front down all the way through 6th

I never understood why the 110 and the 125m even existed together. One was just as good as the other except for the electric start. I imagine the 125m would have eventually replace the 110 but ,with the looming ban, that long term plan failed.
@ThisOldTrike
@ThisOldTrike 21 күн бұрын
I mean, it kinda did. 1985 was the last year of the 110... and the 125M continued into 86 and 87. The 200M is what always confuses me; how it existed along side the 200ES.
@poseidon5003
@poseidon5003 21 күн бұрын
@@ThisOldTrike It wasn't a real 125M with the dual range sub-transmission though. It was just another 125. Different engine. The small one . By that time EVERYONE was getting the ultimate evolution of three wheeler which was the 1984 Big Red anyway.

How much are the 1984 es big reds worth
@ThisOldTrike
@ThisOldTrike 2 жыл бұрын
All depends on condition and originality. The biggest value is in an unrestored, clean, all original machine. A used, good condition machine with uncracked fenders... "patina" on the tank and frame... some rust, replaced tires... wear on the racks... that is the typical condition of an 84 Big Red... that machine right now is worth about $1,750 to $2,000... but if fenders are busted up and the seat cover is ripped and the tank is dented up and rusty on the inside.... value falls fast.
