Cap, I'm with you. I had a leak in my Custom Shop Reissue 58 like you have. When I turn my volume knob of the neck pickup, the sound of the bridge pickup changes. I made blind test tons of times. I guessed 9 from 10 every time. People said to me you are crazy but it's imposibble that I guess everytime. So I discovered then that in vintage wiring there are some leaks. So my ear is just well trained because I'm a pro audio engineer. I see you hear guitars. Don't let them convince you that there is no difference.

Hello guys, I am a blind man in Denver Colorado, in the middle of the US who watches your videos all the time. I just started learning a year and a half ago and love your videos because you both are excellent players, you do a great job explaining the gear, what it looks like, how it works and your thoughts about it in general and this is all helpful for people who can not see the video itself. I was sighted until almost my 21 birthday and now am 47 and just came to the realization that life is going by very fast and the best time to learn is now, right now and am doing so. Being blind is hard for you guys because you are sighted so this is your blind experience here, waking up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and stepping on the cat, tripping over the boots. Being blind is not difficult when you do it 24/7 as I hav in a big American city for 26 years now. One of the tests to graduate the from the training center I have worked at for the last 18 years is a Drop where the student is dropped off by a sighted employee and they have no idea where they are and they must find their way back to our center and only allowed to ask one question of anyone about anything. I passed the test myself in 1994 and have seen hundreds since I started working at the center. It is a full time, 9 month program so people learn all they need to be independent the rest of their lives. The things I miss now is the emotional things, looking at women, looking at the stars or the beautiful mountains just a mile to the west of my home and of course miss driving. I started off with a cheap Ymaha 012 Pacifico starter pack and have since purchased an Ibanez RGA42 and a Black Star Silver Line 50W that I learned about here with you guys. Thanks for the good work educating all of us and entertaining us as well. Ii will never be as good as either of you have learned a lot and love playing and will be getting better every year I do play. Love my Ibanez but looking to get a triple single pick up guitar and looking at the Tele, the Strat and learning about the Epi now, not interested in Gibson because of the extra weight.

You should do these blindfold tests, but switch some of the pickups in order to find out how much of the tone comes from the guitar itself. For example a squier with genuine fender pickups vs a whole fender guitar.
@SW-by9ob8 жыл бұрын
I hazard to guess 'not a lot' TBH. It makes sense it would be more about feel and playability with the more expensive guitars rather than sound, especially if they had the same pickups, strings and setup.
@MetalWonderWombat8 жыл бұрын
SW1976 You might be right. I played a dirt cheap Squier with Fender TexMex pickups for quite some time before switching to an american strat and it really wasnt that bad. Keeping in mind that the Squier with Fender PUs was still 5 times cheaper than the most affordable american strat, it is a pretty good option if you really are on a budget.
@SW-by9ob8 жыл бұрын
MetalWonderWombat My sons got a Squier CV telecaster and TBH even with the stock pickups the differences between it and the more expensive Mexican and USA models we've demoed is negligible and very hard to justify extra cost. The biggest jump in guitars over the past 5-10 years has definitely been In the quality of < £500 instruments IMHO.
@GtotheK8 жыл бұрын
+MetalWonderWombat same goes for epi/gib, take my words with a grain of salt cause I'm no expert and I don't have a lot of experience but what really blew my mind when I switched from an epi les paul to a gibson more than the sound itself was how smooth and easy to play felt in comparison I literally felt like a better guitarist (which probably wasn't true ofc but that's the feeling) just cause I thought I was more agile and fast on the fretboard

DREAM GIG CHALLENGE! Rob and Lee starting a band together and have to build all their equipment. Assemble a custom guitar, a custom amp. The challenge of who rocks harder with a smaller budget.
@MFKR6965 жыл бұрын
The second he strummed that first chord on the Epi SG, I was just thinking "The plot thickens...." lol. That's a damn fine sounding instrument, especially considering what it is. It had some of that PRS-esque controlled jangle that I love. Most guitars these days just sound like a messy jumble of disorganized frequencies. When you hear a guitar that gels like that SG, you know you've found a good one. Unfortunately, with the preponderance of online guitar sales these days, the chance that you may get a good one or you may get a lemon will become all the more prevalent. Personally, I've never bought a guitar that I couldn't play first, and until all the physical guitar stores go away * knock on wood * , I never will. I've always found that the nicest playing, best sounding electrics in a guitar store are rarely the most expensive ones. For instance, my current favorite guitar is a $750CAD Jackson SLATT soloist that was made in Indonesia. I A/B'ed it with a USA made Jackson Dinky just for shits and giggles, and imagine my surprise when I discovered that the SLATT sounded and played way better than the other one which was going for 3x the price. As soon as I discovered that, I decided that I would not leave the store without that guitar. Say what you will about Indonesia, but their factories make some damn fine instruments. Indonesian made Ibanez guitars are also quite good.

The biggest difference is fret job intonation setup and action on a gibson, also sound
@brian44806 жыл бұрын
The tone and sustain is no where near as nice. Is that tone worth the extra cash is debatable but I was not even watching the video, it was just playing in the background and I could tell which was the Gibson and which was the Epi and I have never owned either brand. If I did not hear them back to back I might not be able to tell, but one after another its obvious. This is an ad, there is no way a guy with that many years with all different types cannot tell the difference between a US pickup and a... "what ever pickup the epiphone uses" pick up. I was a total noob when I bought my first fender and I could feel the difference instantly between the mexican ones and the US ones. The frets were smoother and better made, the finish was smoother, and it was just easier to play... The overall feel of the cheap one was sharper and obviously machine made. The sound was even easier to pick out. The Mexican strat sounded like a ghost hand was palm muting every note I played. The US one sounded like it was running through an amp that was twice as loud and clear.

The biggest difference with the SGs is actually how the neck feels, I love my cherry red Epiphone but the lacquer does feel different when they're brand spanking new... Once you wear it in, you don't regret saving the 600 or so bucks... Switches and pots are good, sounds lovely through my old Marshall SL100 or my little 15W Marshall practice amp.

@@paintballTV1 Only Gibson's latest custom shop Les Pauls use Brazilian Rosewood and they are a special run. Brazilian rosewood is very scarce now. Most are using rosewood from other sources. Epiphone switched to Pau Ferro only recently. Fender and others also use it. You can still get rosewood or even ebony on some Epiphone models.

I don't know if you guys still do these videos but if you do I think there should be a challenge for mixing and matching heads and cabinets. Either just doing the best combos or just doing a blind challenge. I suggest this more for the fact as it might give not only an interesting challenge to geek out over but as well as a good lesson in heads and cabs for those wanting to learn more. If a video like this already exists please reply a link and I'll go on my way. If not please consider the possibilities of this and how helpful it will be to newer musicians of a few years such as myself in the ways of heads and cabs.

Even a PRS shootout... the USA ones against the cheaper ones... alternatively.... there are brands out there that are making decent quality stratocaster... telecaster... even Les Paul type guitars.... ( Greg bennett for example ) I'd like to see one of those brands against an epiphone and a Gibson or a fender. Cheers guys love your stuff

Maybe you could do some high end boutique pedals vs their cheaper (maybe tone city or something) counterparts. I'd also like to see some Squier's loaded up with high end pickups and you could either challenge them against the stock models or against higher end guitars, something like a standard squier with duncan ssl-1 pickups vs. and american standard with their stock pickups.

Over priced is a generality. You can buy a new 2016 faded SG for under $800.00 or a new 2016 SG Standard for under $1200.00 that doesn't sound expensive to me. I also agree there are some amazing Squiers, my J Mascis is proof of that!
@JELIFISH198 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about guitars with Fender on the headstock? I think Epiphone vs Gibson is closer to MIM Fender vs MIA Fender. MIM and CV guitars are both import guitars. The prices also don't add up either. A faded SG costs less than an American Special. But a LP Standard costs much more than an American Vintage or Elite while a SG Standard is less than an American Standard.

JELIFISH19 - Nah, I agree with the OP. Top of the range Squier are closer to Fender branded, than Epiphones are to Gibsons.
