This is a showdown of the entry model 2011 world. We took out a Stacatto P, Springfield Prodigy, and the new to market Stealth Arms Platypus for a range day to see which one would come out on top.

So I ordered my platypus before seeing this video, while looking at both the other two pistols. The amount of customization is mind blowing, and the fact that you can use Glock 17 mags is a big selling point.

Nah man staccato mags are reliable. They haven’t had any issues since the gen 3 mags. I got 38k rounds in a staccato p. When someone does that with a platty I’ll change my mind. I have shot all of them and the staccato is ten times better. The staccato they are shooting is the 2020 version. The prodigy is just trash in my opinion. I’d rather shoot a canik 😂

I’ve had my platypus about a week and put 300 or so rounds through it. It’s operates flawlessly. It’s hard not to go down to my range and shoot everyday. Glad I made the call to get one before the wait times got crazy. Commander length all black magwell, short rail and square trigger. Non threaded barrel. It keeps that classic but tactical look.

I've avoided the double stack 1911 niche until just recently. A family member has a gun buying disease, in that he buys guns, never shoots them, and then I buy them at a muuuuuch reduced price. 😂 I just picked up his 4.25 Prodigy with Dawson Tool-less guide rod. It was unfired, and I grabbed it for nine bills. It's going to be a project gun that I'm going full send on.

Does the platypus have polymer mag release button? I'm concerned that if it's metal that it will chew up the Glock polymer mags. That's why when you get the shield arms mags for the Glock 43x you have to change the mag release

I bought a 5 inch prodigy knowing it’s not perfect but for $1200 I figured I could swap some parts out and run 200-300 “break-in” rounds through it and get it running perfect. Seems like a hit or miss with them and I’m curious if the guns that are running flawless are newer guns that Springfield has gone through and corrected behind the scenes.

I have to say first no one can reach slide release with primary hand it’s released with secondary hand. Now that that’s out of the way, reputation staccato hands down they have made a killer reputation for crazy reliability under the new staccato name, stealth arms offers a lot of bang for the buck also customization, prodigy is a builder gun. It offers an entry price that allows end user to pay for upgrades and enhancements. I will say I own both the staccato p and 5 inch prodigy. I am happy to report my prodigy now has 10k rounds through it I’ve had 2 malfunction both were with in the first 500 rounds failure to feed. But I have completely gone through and tuned my prodigy it is my go to gun for steel challenge. So if you want out of the box performance staccato, if you want to run your Glock mags or are 2011 curious platypus, if you want a project and plan on getting machine work or other custom work done prodigy. But the prodigy can run in stock configuration I ran mine stock for about 2,500 rounds (2 range trips) just to prove it can be reliable just takes some know how, remember 2011s are not entry level gun they require the user to have a strong working knowledge of the gun. They aren’t Glocks where any Tom dick or harry that can load a mag can maintain it. It takes a strong working knowledge of the 2011 platform. Diagnosing nuances of failures tuning parts, hand firing parts, tuning mags ect.

If I had bought a prodigy and then saw the platypus, I’d be pissed. It’s pretty shameful that a company like Springfield can put out a product that is defective. The Platypus is a game changer. I put money down on one a few weeks ago. The fact that you can configure it exactly how you want from the factory makes everything else look like a ford model T. Henry Ford said you can have it in any color you want as long as it’s black.

Well the Platypus looks like a contender. To someone who is looking at getting into the 2011 market, don’t discount the prodigy based on this comparison. if you are already familiar with 1911s and working on 1911s, my buddy has a Prodigy which worked just fine out of the box, decent shooter but he worked on his himself, replaced a couple MIM parts and the extractor, did his own trigger job, and now for the price of a Platypus, he has a solid 3lb trigger, still zero failure Prodigy. Grip is great, as they stated in the video. It’s still a good option.

I bought the Prodigy thinking I was going to have to change parts and do all kinds of upgrades to it and even possibly send it back to Springfield. I took it to the range and put about 400 rounds on the first trip out and not only was it flawless but probably the most accurate 9mm I own, granted I do not own a stacatto or any 3k - 5k pistol. The trigger was fine again maybe not a 5k dollar pistol trigger but very nice. The prodigy looks better than the stacatto and definitely looks better than a platypus. After a trip to the range I decided not to do anything to the prodigy other than the red dot. The 4.25 looks better, the grip is better, and shoots just as good as anything Ive shot including Stacatto. Don' tlisten to KZbin reviews. Go out and shoot one and then make a decision. I might change out MIM parts eventually , but why they work great for now.

The Platypus is definitely the winner for me, and the Staccato is still probably the best entry level. However, the Prodigy is $1,275 at nearly all local dealers here in Phoenix, and various websites online. It now seems pretty reasonable for a double stack 1911 to need some break in, and TLC time while being a full $1k less than an optic cut Staccato.

Unfortunately, for the Prodigy, when you buy a Glock, you’re only spending about $500-$600 for the firearm. After you add your “improvements” you may spend another $500 or $600, and end up with a grand total no more than $1200. Versus the Prodigy that starts out at $1450 and STILL needs additional upgrades to make it worth having. The Platypus is a much better deal for the money.

When doing a comparative review, you have to make sure you come into the review with the full history of all compared to firearms. You only really knew everything about the Platypus. The other two were complete wildcards with the Prodigy a complete mystery. We don't know how much they've been messed with and now it makes the review and comparison a bit suspect. Especially the Prodigy and they have the reputation now as baby's first 1911 gunsmithing project so there's no telling if that gun's been messed with internally which induced those failures you had.

I've been researching double stack 1911's for a little bit. I've got two Springfield guns that are rock solid right now, a 2001 era 1911 Loaded model with well over 10000 rounds through it that I can shoot a single, ragged hole in a target with, and a XD-M Elite 10mm 4.5" with a Holosun that I also love. A tack driver for sure. That said, I want to like the Prodigy. I can walk into a gun store and walk out with it same day, which is a big draw, but there are more reliability concerns than there are not, and I want my gun reliable. So, I looked at the Staccato, I looked at the RIA doublestack 9mm 1911 (I voted that one out because I had a RIA 10mm that was a jam-o-matic), and I simply can't afford a $4000 pistol, so that limits my choice. Then I started seeing the Platypus, and I think it will scratch my itch. I'm not a competition shooter, I just want high capacity, reliability (My Springfield Loaded is 100% reliable), and the Glock mags are nice as well. So I ordered a Platypus yesterday, and I can't wait to get it. That natural point I get with a 1911, along with a superior trigger over a Glock or even my XD-M will be VERY nice. The XD-M will probably still get Winter duty carry, but that Platypus will be a great sidearm, and I know the bullets will go where I point them, something I'm not so sure about with my Glock, even with an optic.

Staccato is *the* standard/mainstream entry level 2011. The only other inexpensive doublestack 1911s that are truly worth comparing to a Staccato -- are the Platypus which is brand new, and Bul Armory's offerings. Can you go cheaper? This is so laughably biased that when I watched it I thought, "Man, this guy sounds like a Stealth Arms dealer". Lo and behold, the comments revealed the truth. 😂

@txarms ya, I get it man. Gotta peddle the new hotness, but at least try to hide the bias.

@@keithferguson1299 could be portrayed as confirmation bias since I do own the Platypus…however the other 2 people there said basically the same thing. The other dealer there (also a dealer for all 3 brands) said the same thing with no skin in the game since he doesn’t own any of those.

I have all 3 of these, and 40 years experience shooting 1911’s You both are obviously anti Prodigy and it showed your negative bias. All 3 are decent guns,. If you gave me a 2500 buck budget , I would buy the Prodigy and take the 1200 buck left over and do a bit of work , it would then put the base P to shame. Or buy a spec’s out platy and take the extra 500 and get a nice optic … The P is over priced for what it does. So it would be my last choice before you jump on me and my opinion. Watch back your video and tell me you did not have a negative preconceived bias against the Prodigy . If the failures was only 1 mag and 1 type of ammo, to be fair, it could have been a damaged mag, bad ammo or a dirty or dry gun,

You should probably do your homework before reviewing 3 guns and really only know much about one. Dude in camo shorts shouldn’t have even been part of the review he had zero input.

Wow! Another BS review to create drama to have more views. I would not waste money on a platypus. The only positive reviews I saw are the glock owners that never owned 2011's. Prodigy is actually the best. If you get the gen 2 or send it to SA to get it fixed and tuned. For $1200 you cant go wrong. The prodigy feels better shotting than the P. The only changes I made is the EGW ignition kit. Im even thinking of getting the 5 instead of the XL. Since there no point getting the XL when I already have the XC.
