About four years ago, GM beat Tesla to the market with an affordable long range EV. The #ChevroletBolt had an annoyingly frustrating name because it was too similar to the plug-in hybrid Volt, but it offered up to 238 miles of range from a 60 kWh battery pack and decent acceleration with 200 HP and 266 torque. For 2020, #Chevrolet is upgrading the #BoltEV with a slightly bigger battery which improves the range to 259 miles. While the looks of the #Bolt have not changed, some may find it offers an enticing blend of approachability and affordability.

My wife and I recently bought a 2020 Bolt EV. I was really nervous about it, afraid it would upset our life, fearing range anxiety. In the end, it is truly an amazing car. We think nothing of driving to a city 2 hours away and drive around and then drive back home without having to charge it. 99% of our charging is done at home. My wife loves not having to take it to a gas station and she also loves the fact it has actual knobs. It does not take a scientist to drive it, it is a very nice car. We recently went on a longer trip and tried out the DC Fast Charger, and that was a good experience. The last 3 weeks here in Michigan have been around 0 F, yeah very cold. The car is amazing, we drive more now than we did before, it is so fun to drive. Ice, snow, cold, wind, we have been in it all and the car has done amazingly well. We don't think of it so much as an EV, it is our car and we love it. Great job GM.

@@quasarsavage I have a Model Y and I think the 2020 Bolt is very interesting. Having CCS is pretty great. There are a lot of charging locations that Teslas can't charge, and that number is increasing. If Tesla makes a CCS adapter for North America then it's pretty much a done deal. But right now Teslas are restricted to Tesla Superchargers and Chademo chargers if they carry the $450 adapter for it. CCS is growing rapidly. The Bolt is a great car.

Still happy with my '17 Bolt. Nearing 70K and (knocking on wood) still no issues. Tire rotations and air filters are the only listed "maintenance" for 150k. Well, I did just get some new tires too. I do agree that no one should pay MSRP for this car, but no one generally does. ;-) Fun car to drive, more space than you would think for a small car. As a commuter car, I charge at home/work and never have to stop anywhere to charge it. Not the car for everyone, but it's a great little car.

Just my two cents but I would enjoy your reviews better if they stuck more to the facts and your opinions were presented a bit less nit picky and hypercritical cause they come off as “bitchy”. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone wants or can afford a luxurious super car. Some of us don’t want to put a shitload of money in depreciating assets since that isn’t how you build wealth. I have a 2019 Bolt premier and we went with it over a Tesla M3 because we liked the high seating position of the Bolt and that it was a practical hatchback with good visibility. Also we liked it had Apple and Android car play which Tesla doesn’t. Another thing we considered is the reliability issues Tesla has had and the Chevy Bolt really hasn’t. It’s been a fun zippy car that looks like a cartoon character out of the Disney Pixar movie Cars. I think it’s cute. I think the Tesla model 3 is a nice vehicle but I hated the front end which looks like a damn catfish. I get compliments all of the time on the color we chose for safety which is “shock” and people see me driving here in dangerous ass Los Angeles. Thanks for reading.

I like the front of the new bolt but I like the back of this one. I think the roof line could be a bit lower but overall I do like the shape of it. I think it is shaped much better than the leaf. The Kona is also a very nice car. I hate when people complain about hard plastics. As a reviewer who is complaining about cheap materials in economy cars you are driving up the prices. Car companies hear you and use nicer materials which then drives up the price. I would take all hard plastics and a $20k bolt. It isn't meant to be a luxury car so don't judge it like one.

13:50 I see what you did there I own a 2019 Bolt and I echo most of your complaints about the car. The biggest reason my partner and I purchased it is because we got a fully loaded Premier for way less than $30k. The seats are a huge problem for me. I have an unusually long torso and the top of the seat pushes my shoulders forward. It's not uncomfortable at all for about an hour, but after than it becomes really uncomfortable. The lack of radar cruise and a sunroof is odd for sure, but this is a car that was built to a price because I believe Chevy thought it was the only way to sell it. As you said, in 2017, nobody made a long range EV at this price point. Now, they have some competition from Hyundai/Kia, Tesla is trying to make cheaper options, and a feeble attempt at competition from Nissan, so it makes the Bolt look a little outdated in design even though the drivetrain still holds its own. One thing to keep in mind about styling is that there are many more people outside if the US than in it. This car is sold all over the place and many other markets prefer EVs more than us. A smaller, narrower car with lots of interior space is ideal in many other parts of the world. One criticism that I have about car reviews in general is the weight that is put on the feel of materials that no buyer ever touches or would even care about if car reviewers didn't pick on it. How often do you touch the top of the dash in your car or the lower half of the door panel? These are areas that are built to with durable but inexpensive materials specifically because nobody cares about those spots, except for car reviewers looking to pick on something. It is a constant criticism that I hear on just about any review of a vehicle costing less than $50k and its really a pointless thing to complain about.

@Richard Favreau I got my 2019 about a year ago for just under $20k with all state/federal incentives. I contacted every Chevy dealer within 250 miles of me (about two dozen) and finally found a great deal. Keep hunting, it's getting near the end of the year so you just need to find one dealer with excess inventory and/or who hate EVs and just wants them off the lot who is willing to deal.

I have a 2017 Bolt Premier which I lease. I agree with your comments regarding the front seats and use of hard plastics. I'm 5'9" and 2010 pounds; although the front seats could be more comfortable I do find them to be tolerable. The longest trip I've taken was about 160 miles (round trip) and I had no back, hip or thigh problems. You spent way too much time telling us how much you hate the design of the outside. My lease is $344/month with no money down plus I received an $800 Costco gift card. Just checked a Tesla Model 3 standard range plus with standard paint, wheels, etc. This car on lease with no money down would be $535/month; almost $200 difference.

The reason why rear seat legroom is good is the SAME reason why the front seats are so BAD! There is virtually zero padding in the front seats, this allows the front seats to be very thin. Thin front seats provide more room the rear seat legroom.

I love my Bolt EV, but yes, the seats really are a let down. They could have easily added more padding and lost an inch of rear legroom. I can live with it due to my 15 minute commute and our around town errands. I happen to love hatchbacks but if you ask me, a CUV is exactly the same so Chevy should just relabel it as a Ute.

20:48 Included charger will do Level II 240v @ 12 Amps (car shows 3kw while charging) with a sub-$20 adapter from Home Depot/Amazon/etc. 120v @ 8 or 12 Amp mode will suffice for most people day-to-day, but you can use the adapter to plug into your dryer outlet if that's the only 240v source you have right now and you need a quicker zap every once in a while. Get a beefy extension cable if your dryer is nowhere near the garage/driveway.

I agree. Just say what is the power of various options. People can divide two numbers usually. Or put a table with numbers on screen. Also most people don't charge from 0 to 100% like ever. Usually people will charge from something fluke 25% to 60% most of the time. At least that is what they should be doing for shortish daily commutes to prolong the battery life.

Why even make a 2020 review of a car if you are just repeating all the criticisms from the 2017-2019 car? I love my Bolt and don’t think someone who LOVES THEIR TESLA’S (especially the expensive performance versions) are going to go for a BOLT! Viewers should look on the Bolt owner groups on Facebook before buying and not KZbin! I generally like your reviews but not this nit picky one of the same criticisms that Chevy is changing on the next version of the Bolt.

Nothing has been confirmed yet with changes coming for 2021, so it's just all speculation. The 2020 model is what Chevy loaned us for the week and since we never did a video for the 2017-2019 model, its easy to see how our complaints mirror reviews you've seen from other outlets on the prior years. It's fair that you don't agree with some of our complaints about the car (especially since you own one), but we specifically mentioned how the deals are insane and we don't blame you for choosing this over a Tesla. We tried to compare the car more with the Niro EV, Kona EV, and Nissan Leaf versus a Tesla, but at the same time, you can't not review an EV and mention Tesla in the space.

Actually... demand for the Chevy Bolt is was pretty high in late 2018 - early 2020. "Demand for the Chevrolet Bolt EV, especially in the United States, Canada and South Korea, has outstripped production." -- GM The whole COVID-19 thing though has slowed things back down though across the industry. Bolt's aren't selling as fast as Tesla's obviously, but it isn't *that* dire. I was seeing 3-4 Bolt's during my commute daily in Austin. That might be just because Austin though ;-)

I've spent lots of time waiting for these things to finish charging at DCFC stations. They really slow down past 50%, so people tend not to charge them much beyond that (except Uber and Lyft drivers). There goes your range - figure maybe 130 miles between stops on a trip. The charging curve is the car's weakness.

The reason this car didn't sell is because its not a Tesla. Put a Tesla badge on it and it would sell like crazy. Tesla is like an Iphone, its trendy. Its no better than an android but people want it because they want to portray an certain image of themselves. Its the same way with Tesla. So in other words electric cars will NEVER sell very well because people don't want them and most people who do just want a Tesla because they want to be trendy. Some people actually want an electric car but thats less than 2% of the population. Sorry fanboys but ICE is here to stay, at least until hydrogen fuel cells are perfected.

It was not "one of the first" - it was the first. Name some other car that was under $40,000 four years ago that could go over 200 miles? Now it is one of a few but as stated, goes further than the other cheap models. Seats are thinly padded to keep the weight down... so the car can go further. Want nicer seats? Get the Kia or the Nissan but don't go as far. Funny, better than all the cheap competitors even in his opinion, but hates the way it looks so pans it. Still, nice review.

It's a generalization, and it's true. No need to get offended over it. When I was shopping for a Bolt, literally everyone I talked to, commented how "dorky" it looked because of how tall and narrow it is. I don't think I have ever heard a "wow, that is an awesome looking car." Same with station wagons in the U.S. Americans just simply do not buy them. If you look at the sales #'s, you'd see that's generally true. America LOVES their trucks and SUV's. Even the sedan is dying in the US.
