( www.TFLcar.com ) The $56,000, 400 horsepower 2020 Ford Explorer ST is as close to a hot hatch as Ford sells in America anymore, and it definitely brings the goods on performance. But how does it stand up as a complete package? Roman covers the top 10 most interesting features.

This seems to be a trend these days. I've seen very expensive luxury cars with similar screens. Didn't Dodge Ram integrate a huge pad into the dash? Personally I think all this electronic stuff can be very distracting if you let it.

Benjamin Mathew the tesla screen is nice but its not like the screen in this explorer, the tesla screen controlls everything This screen is just there.... its ugly I dont know how the volvo one looks like ill look it up later. But its just ugly.... and you know what i hate? The screen is usually low res, and the interface for the rear camera, AND the bezels are so big Seriously an ipad 1st gen has smaller bezels wtf They could have easily integrated it into the gauge cluster since its a screen

@Benjamin Mathew Tesla and Volvo's screens are well integrated into the dashboard whereas the 10 inch just looks odd. You can tell its poorly designed because of how the backup camera is displayed.

Nathaniel Moran infotainment screen is one thing but the infotainment system which it operates also could use a upgraded processor and graphics. They didn’t spend much of ANY time on the exterior. It literally looks unchanged at the rear and cheap with the incandescent amber turn signals. The digital gauge cluster also is very laggy at times and looks cheap to me in the blue default layout which Ford is beginning to put it in all of their vehicles. Not to mention the fit and finish of the interior in most places is poor...the 2020 Explorer just seems like a rushed job overall.

However, what everyone seems to miss is that it's only included if you pay $999 for the "Premium Technology Package", which also includes the massaging seats and 14 stereo speakers instead of 12. Most people won't pay for that add-on package and will instead get the stock horizontally mounted screen, which looks much better

I have 3 friends that have the mustang and F150 that had to make a claim with ford for a new motor bc oil is getting past the rings and causing smoke out the exhaust. The SRT is awesome and it is quicker but my main issue with that hemi V8 is that there is almost no room to grow in power. You cant tune it cause you have to replace the whole ecu and if you do the gains are very minor. And it cant take boost cause the internals are too weak so youre basically stuck at factory power levels. Atleast with the explorer 3.0 you can tune it and at the very least match the srt.

How’s the 10 speed transmission feel behind the 3.0 Ecoboost? Even the engine was complained about, is it a bored out 2.7 or destroked 3.5? Who cares, how does it perform? Is it reliable? Etc, all questions that could’ve been answered rather than seeming to complain without being fan boy or brand loyal. How’s the auto stop/start feature?

Ford and Chevy need to offer their 3.0 diesels in their SUV's. Explorer and Tables with Diesels and the 10 speed getting great highway mpg are a no brainer. Then an even smarter move...offer really legit off-road capability to them. Jeep Grand Cherokee ecodiesel coming up has the entire field to itself. Ford and Chevy need to offer their diesels in a lot more vehicles.

Honestly I don't really get the point of a mini-Diesel. Still going to have to pay up for the Extra cost of Diesel fuel, DEF, and extra maintenance. A good hybrid powertrain could easily get at least 40 MPG and save a bunch of money. Ford Bronco is on the way, but GM is still lagging behind on that. Still don't see them dethroning Jeep though, even Toyota couldn't do that. Honestly the missed opportunity here is not building a model that challenged the Mopar SRT SUVs.

@@JohnDoe-nz6bk You proved nothing. As I stated elsewhere, Ford identified the problem as fine cracks forming in the exhaust manifold, which is bolted on to the engine under the hood. When the engine was hot, the cracks could expand and release exhaust gases under the hood, which at that point might be drawn in through the heat / AC air intake. Not all manifolds suffered the cracks, and even with the cracks CO wasn't guaranteed to be drawn in. The downwards tips on the new Explorer are for cleanliness. Think about it, sir...all of the vehicles with "straight out" exhaust tips just like the Explorer...and none of them are changing to pointing downward. Not to mention, pointing the tips (or outlets) downward wouldn't accomplish anything anyway. The exhaust gas would still exit in essentially the same exact area.
@JohnDoe-nz6bk
@JohnDoe-nz6bk 5 жыл бұрын
Tyler MacConnell 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦‍♂️ you definitely are a special kind of stupid! I guess that's why you work for Ford?!?? And before your dumbass says it was because of aftermarket parts, ALL our interceptors were wired by FORD!!
@tylermacconnell217
@tylermacconnell217 5 жыл бұрын
@@JohnDoe-nz6bk You're a cop like I work for Ford. Just so you are aware, the "Interceptor" you keep referring to is the Taurus sedan, which did not have the CO issue. The "Interceptor Utility" is the Explorer in question. The police vehicles don't have chrome tips anyway, so there is nothing to keep clean. Ford stated the new 2020 Explorer has the exhaust exiting under the tips so the exposed chrome portion stays clean. Direct-injected vehicles tend to have their exhaust tips become soot-laden. It makes perfect sense. There would be no benefit to directing exhaust gas to exit 3 inches further forward, facing downward, as far as keeping CO out of a vehicle. When moving, the airflow would send the gas right out the back as usual. All vehicles are sealed anyway, and there was never a question that the Explorers were not sealing properly. Perhaps you should research this problem a little further. Also, photos of "your" employer's fleet of Explorers with modified, downward pointing exhaust tips would be very interesting to see.

I especially appreciated the “lack of” over-gushing for a vehicle that has its blemishes and question marks. I’m buying it and I can’t believe I actually like the red color (non cop car looking). I just wish I could control the interior color scheme. It’s fast but I’m not gonna race, I just need the “young bucks” to know what they are messing with! B pillar buttons not new. C'mon man... However, the most controversial thing in the video is the down turned exhaust "prevents soot". I believe the down turned exhaust helps to eliminate the carbon monixed cloud that would be stuck in the low pressure area behind the vehicle. Thus, contributing to the Explorer's exhaust issue. I'm curious if this model will have measurable readings of CO like my current Explorer does... Just curious why has TFL not done any testing or reporting on the 13-17 Explorer exhaust issues? Ford makes a turd once again. wow so many problems already that nobody knew about. UGH that terrible 3.0L sound, sorry but id get tired of that real quick. It sounds like the old 2.7L V6 in the Chrysler 300... AS for the 21in wheels???? good job FORD at choosing very unpopular sizes, couldnt go with 20" wheels that have tons of tires being made for them, nope they opted for 21" wheels which will greatly reduce the availability and increase the cost of tires. lol the small backup camera on the screen is a huge flaw... Just like they mentioned, the big screen looks out of place and appears as though its a tablet that is just stuck on the middle of a very poorly and ugly designed dashboard (air vents, button placement, form of the actual plastic) all garbage. second didnt they say it get slike 18-24mpg? they were getting 19ish i think??? HAHA My heavier Durango R/T gets that with AWD and with the ole 5.7L Hemi... Another flaw many wont like is that the ST doesnt have a bench seat for a second row.... ding ding that's a huge mistake, i know for a fact that people with a family aren't choosing that for a vehicle, good luck climbing into the back seat, sitting in the middle to aid a hungry or crying baby, you are going to need to sit on the far end and try to reach over... or jsut beoing able to sit 1 baby or kid and a couple dogs in the middle ... The Durango again wins here with 7 passengers and way more thought for people who want a family suv but can also go fast.. I am sure they have way more flaws or downsides than mentioned. sorry FORD but try again, meanwhile Dodge is still wiping the floor with you even with its decade old design and detuned 5.7L Hemi.
