Last years season finale was a madness. In fact, all of last season was a bit much at times. So today I thought I'd bring back my Photoshop swapping, and replay the 2021 Abu Dhabi season finale, as if the roles were reversed.
Does this change your perspective on what happened? How would you have felt, if your favourite had been on the other end? I hope this is a thought provoking one. And as ever, keep it clean in the comments.

I always found it impressive how close Lewis came to getting back past Max. I wonder how the rest of the lap would have been if lewis managed to pass at that point. THAT would have been something. I think it shows how nervous max must have been as it was a rare mistake by him into the turn at the end of the first straight. Honestly I have always wished the race was red flagged. Then we could have had a nice 5 or so lap showdown with them both on fresh soft tyres for the title. I know it would have still sucked for lewis because he was in a dominant position, but no one wants to see a race finish behind the safety car and it was an epic championship and that would have been an epic way to end it. I think ultimately if there was a rule about not having the race finish under the safety car it would have prevented something like this from happening.

My biggest issue with the Abu Dhabi situation is the reason they gave for that absurd final lap. They wanted an exciting finish. However, with Verstappen on new red softs and Hamilton on 50 lap old hard tyres, that was not a competition and that's what makes that finish such a big issue for me. If they really wanted an exciting finish, why not red flag the race and have everyone on equal tyres. Then we can actually see an exciting finish that doesn't already have a predetermined outcome.

I’m more torn over the safety car handling and how Massi or someone up in race control, crumbled under the pressure of managing the last few laps and creatively interpreted the rules. As for the result, i was neutral throughout the season and always said whoever wins it in the end, would deserve it. Max drove consistently better across the entire year, but Lewis delivered and showed his prowess when he needed to. I would have been so sorry for whoever lost it. Although i did want to see if Lewis could be dethroned, those two and their teams put up a hell of a battle and i am eternally blessed i got to witness that unfold before my very eyes and you should be too.

That argument that one driver deserved to win the race while the other deserved to win the title is nonsense. It’s been pretty well established how “lucky” Lewis was in 2021 but Max had his share of luck as well & the championship could’ve gone the other way before Abu Dhabi. Max is lucky Ferrari didn’t fix Charles’ car in Monaco, turn 1 is either a crash or Max takes P2. Max is lucky Lewis pressed the Brake magic button in Baku. Max is lucky it rained in Spa, the odds of winning from pole are the lowest (19%) of any race track. Max is lucky Mercedes had a 4 second pit stop in Monza. Before the pit stop Lewis was ahead of Lando. Max is lucky it rained in Russia. Would’ve finished P7. Max is lucky Mick ignored blue flags in COTA. Max is lucky he didn’t get penalized for the move in Brazil. Max is lucky he wasn’t disqualified for the brake check in Saudi. Max is lucky he won that championship. Only one of these things had to happen for Abu Dhabi to be irrelevant. Max put in work to get there but luck always plays a part.

Lewis had a great start, and maintained a very healthy lead while taking care of those tyres, would have been a very beautiful and elegant way for him to break Michael's record. But the current F1 obsession of 'oh we gotta end this with a race no matter what' led to that nonsensical decision and ruined what could have been a great moment for Formula 1 and of course for Lewis. @@TommoOnKZbin Yeah...idk, I think you should let the entertaining moments happen by themselves, if you try to force them to happen you end up with blunders like this. Yeah, out of context that last lap looks like a great duel, sure, but in reality, it was never a battle, Lewis was a sitting duck with Max right behind him with fresh softs. It could have been Lance Stroll driving that RB instead of Max and the result would have been the same at that point lol, Lewis wouldn't have stood a chance either way, so that wasn't really an epic final battle it was more like an execution :)) So yeah, my gripe is really with FIA trying to create these duels artificiallly even when it's not the case. Not to mention that every F1 tv pundit worth their salt would have been able to make a great moment out of the ending of that race if it ended under the safety car, just imagine, Lewis doing a cool down lap waving to the fans under the fireworks after driving clinical lap after clinical lap, winning his eight championship that was also his most difficult to win, breaking Schumi's record, that would have made for great TV and would have been an amazing story, but we were deprived of that.

I still think the pivotal moment for Hamilton losing the title was the mistake he made at Baku, he arguebly should've won in Hungary as well but Alonso delivered arguebly one of the best performances of the entire season. I agree with the other comments stating that had the roles have been reversed, it would've been more controversal and Verstappen would be more popular now. One things for certain though, Max has definately earnt the title this year.

There shouldn't have been a reason to pit as 99/100 times that race would have been over Also what a lot of people are forgetting is P2 had done a free pit stop already thanks to the earlier VSC and had significantly fresher tires so they have more reason to roll the dice and chance that it's a safety car finish rather than pitting for the third time
@kian_de_gamer1638
@kian_de_gamer1638 Жыл бұрын
@@gamingnoah9807 well thats the discussion point... They were not sure if the race would restart or not. Just reviewed it for you and Latifi's car was taken off track when Lewis started lap 56 of 58. That would have been a sign to let the cars unlap themselves. There were still some marshals on the track but those were gone by the end of safety car lap 56. (The last marshals left the track when Lewis was on the small straight between the last and second last corner.) Im not sure how the rules work and if its allowed to let cars unlap themselves while there are still marshals on the track so lets just say the track is clear at the end of lap 56. All lapped cars get the message to overtake the safety car at the start finish straight startin lap 57 (for the leaders). Norris, Alonso, Ocon, Leclerc, Vettel, Ricciardo, Stroll and Mick Schumacher can now start to overtake the race leaders and safety car and i excpect the last lapped car to pass the safety car at the end of the first long straight. I understand the lapped cars are given one lap to catch up and altough it wouldn't be a full lap for everyone, it technically would have. Conclusion: The race would have had 1 racing lap anyways and Lewis would won regardless of Masi's mistakes. Maybe Masi fell the pressure of a big brand like mercedes after Toto wolffs "you only need one racing lap" message. And Christian Horner doesn't need to cry so much because they agreed before the race that it was the race directors job to finish the race under green flags.
@flyingwhale5938
@flyingwhale5938 Жыл бұрын
@@RANDOMZBOSSMAN1 yes sure, but that season teams agreed to end under green flags always if possible. baku got red flagged and restarted because of that. hamilton could have gained 25 points advantage but he bottled it. mercedes did not stay out because they thought race would end under safety car, they stayed out because they thought track position would be more valuable considering the rocketship they had at those last races. they only wanted race to end under sc because that worked for them. and if the positions were reversed they wouldnt accept a sc ending and you can be sure about that. and the radio messages never implied that merc were expecting a sc ending. they wanted it, and argued it was the right thing to do. it would have been over before 2021 99/100, it shouldnt have been over in 2021. they could have been a bit faster and call the lapped cars earlier, thats all. and there would be contreversy in any scenario.

I still recognize how messed up that last lap restart was and sometimes wish to be able to go back and instead be cheering for Lewis' to claim his 8th title. If it were to be Max the one who got "robbed" I would have not been as indifferent, wishing to see a new and exciting F1 prospect dethrone a legend of the sport, finally putting an end to their dominance. I really like this idea and wish to see how other scenarios would've played out if the roles were swapped (Hamilton and Rosberg, Vettel and Alonso in 2010, 2012 and so on..)

Arguably, Lewis winning would have been better for both drivers image, regardless of the context of the sport. Lewis gets his 8th, surpasses Schumacher and likely retired and Max gets to head into a new era as the dominant driver who will undoubtedly go on to win multiple titles without the controversy of AD2021 clouding his *fully deserved* first title. Both parties fans also lost out that day, Max fans shouldn’t have to deal with the constant rigmarole around AD technicalities and Lewis fans shouldn’t have to constantly be reminded of the entire event.

_Very_ well done. I enjoyed the script-flip aided by your 'shop skills. In Part Two you dug into the details of track officials commo and decisions. I really liked the details of this lap, this tire startegy, the script flip of Bottas and Checo, etc. Nota Bene - in Part 6 nothing is said or mentioned about the invention of new rules (which is what happens when officials ignore established rules in any sport). I understand that you're making a Twilight Zone reboot of 2021 Abu Dhabi, so it's fine for the vid. TL;DR That being said, watching this vid after the last race (2022 Monza) does bring the SC rules issue into focus. Recall the finish at Monza: SC stays on track for the stipulated lap after the problem is cleared. It did not change the outcome of the race and wouldn't have changed it (IMO) if the Abu Dhabi Rewritten Rules were applied as well, e.g., lapped cars between P2 and P1 can pass (but no others) and the SC bails out a lap early. None of that would change the 2022 Monza outcome. The 2022 Monza race ended per the rules. IMO that shines a painfully bright spotlight on the 2021 Abu Dhabi finish, where rules were changed on the last lap. Those newly-written rules benefitted one driver. Unlike many fans, I do not see a conspiracy (seriously, I do not). I think Masi and F1 put "The Show" of F1 ahead of F1. Put another way, Masi and F1 turned into characters on Netflix DTS in pursuit of having a photo-finish moment. They put optics ahead of F1. (That's gaslighting, BTW.) How so? So much fancy dancing and bullshit has come from F1/FIA after 2021 Abu Dhabi claiming there's nothing to see, no rules were broken by track officials, and you're crazy if you think so. (That's 50 acres of donkey muffins, y'all.)

People saying Valtteri defending like Checo is unrealistic and I don't disagree but there is another point I would like to mention. Max being ahead in the lap 1 lunge incident I think he would not take evasive action instead there would be a minor touch. Assuming both cars are able to continue he would have defended the last lap lunge more firmly and another contact takes place.

Either way, the Steward's let the lapped cars unlap themselves and pulled the safety car too early. They should've have red flagged it with several laps to go or finish it in a yellow. This moment will always be defined as a botched F1 title. Lewis should have won if the rules were followed. Verstappen could've passed Lewis if we had laps to go anyways. Instead we got a GOT Season 8 ending.

What I don't understand is how Masi could hold cars on position for so long before deciding to let back markers unlap. Almost looks like he did that on purpose to bring more tension. I was always sure that they had enough time to do everything they needed + 1 or 2 racing laps. Either way, even if they didn't have time, it was decided races ago that races shouldn't end in SC mode, and I heard that Toto energetically agreed with this, but it didn't work out the way he wanted(I guess he was thinking "we got the juiced engine now, so we just need 1 or 2 laps to overtake them in case anything happens, everything is set now").

Not only the unprecedented rule-twisting (but that´s the most infuriating) but the bad luck and the fact that he and the team made everything perfectly and yet... when it mattered most, things were already decided. they didn´t stand a chance. Also Lewis would probably retire from internet (harder than he did) considering the amount of racism he would have to ensure. And I´m not saying Max should´ve got it, but y'all know how things work differently when it comes to a black man's success: when it's TOTALLY deserved, it is questioned (check his 7 WDCs).
