Run a time drill on a car with electric push start, electronic parking brakes, and electric shifting. Imagine your being chased by a psycho. Every car I've tested failed and got killed. Lincoln might be most intuitive.

Why does it matter, if they all have the same electronic engagement? It literally just feels fake. It's like the equivalent of buying wheels with fake beadlocks on them to make the car feel more "rugged" even though they do nothing.

As someone who does three-point turns and other similar maneuvers every single time I drive, it's nice to have something you don't have to look at or fiddle with to change direction. @Paul S I own an older Lexus and I have experienced plenty of electronic issues just like many other cars that age. Only thing is, most are not major concerns and no major mechanical setbacks which is why it doesn’t leave you stranded. Many BMWs, Benzes etc will blow gaskets and piss oil far before their electronics give out. If you think Lexus has no electronic issues then you are either ignorant or stupid, just as you sound.

As always, good overall review, Doug. Having owned several “high-end” vehicles I’ll tell you this. Toyota/Lexus will never be first to market with anything groundbreaking. They take technology from the Germans that’s anywhere from 2-5 years old and unlike the Germans, they perfect it. So you’re right- the Nav/Entertainment/“Luxury” features are are not up to modern times with the Germans. But as someone who owns a 2022 Audi A8 with all the modern “features”….they’re a failure. Quirky, buggy, problematic. Nothing it’s cracked up to be. So, “latest” isn’t always “greatest.”

I have to laugh how he points out you want this for the long-term not the short-term. Wrong. You want it. Period. The LX interior materials are superior to those of its rivals. I think I can actually explain a lot of features focused on rear passengers: Toyota and Lexus SUVs are popular vehicles for the very rich in Latin America. Rich people who purchase these tend to have bodyguards who do the actual driving, often two sitting in the front while the owners sit in the back. It is not uncommon for those who are even wealthier to have additional SUVs or pickup trucks driven by other bodyguards to accompany their main vehicle. Toyota/Lexus surely know this and I would not be surprised that this is also the case in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, where I understand these SUVs are also popular among rich people. Leasing cars is not a popular thing to do outside of the US and Canada as far as I know, so simple and reliable features are also appreciated in these regions (and if you think about it, you don’t really care if your bodyguard has all the nicest luxuries, ammenities or tech).

@Theprofessor1212
@Theprofessor1212 2 жыл бұрын
A space saving selector switch is not state of the art or gimmicky. It actually has function. It’s not like the gear selector is actually physically connected to the gearbox. It’s also an electronic switch which should be moved to the dash to make more space in the centre console. IMO the physical large selector switch is more gimmicky as the function it performs can be performed by 4 small P,R,N,D buttons.

Indeed, as mentioned in the video. However, also as mentioned in the video, unless you actually plan to own this for the long haul, these compromises are lost on you. People who want to keep it for 10 or 15 years will love this stuff, but most $100K SUV buyers lease a new one every three years -- and for them, a lot of these compromises will be a disappointment.

Where I’m from the 570s are substantially more expensive than GLS' or X7's due to massive engine displacement tax (like at least 70% more, basically the tax nearly quadrupled the price vs US markets), yet rich guys just can’t stop buying those because they just won’t break, and you can’t deny the LX has such a road presence. Yes we can say they don't know how to buy a car, paying more something "worse", but they're rich, they know what kind of value they want, and the LX gives them just that Plus some older guys just want an expensive, comfortable, simple SUV, not gimmicky stuff that goes wrong

Some of the 'dated' bits like the gearshifter and instrument cluster are there because I think to some degree, Lexus buyers still WANT some of that traditional stuff, it symbolises the dependable Toyota/Lexus quality/reliability and eschews the gimmicky stuff from it's competitors. I love the fact my IS has a beautiful leather/chrome gear shifter, instrument binnacle, lots of leather and real wood inserts. I can't stand these floating ipads that Mercedes use for their instrument cluster, without a binnacle and that column mounted stalk for gear selections. edit: in conclusion: why doesn't this Lexus have all the gimmicks of RR or MB or BMW? because it's not a metrosexual town car. The LX is not directly competing with a Range Rover, it's kind of it's own thing. It's a Land Cruiser based vehcile that combined two worlds of utilitarian LandCruiser and luxury Lexus. It's unashamedly a quirky vehicle not following the pack..and the buyers LOVE IT.

I agree. My wife has grown to hate the push button gear selector in her 2018 GMC Terrain although it does look "modern" according to what some journalists say lol. She came out of an old 2008 CR-V when we got it but she reminds me fairly often how much easier it was to simply drive it lol. We'll likely be shopping for a new Rav4 soon but she's been eyeing the new Ford Bronco Sport although they have a rotary shifter which I'm not sure if that's any better or worse.

No Doug gets it. That's great you have the means to afford an LX, but what sells in this segment is panache and technology, which is why most buyers here lease their 100K rig. Lexus is the outlier, and honestly for what they ask for is worth it if you keep it that long, but most luxury buyers don't keep their cars that long so they don't care if it lasts 10 years. That's why RRs/BMWs/Mercedes stay popular because there is no risk to the potential reliability issues most European vehicles are susceptible to once the warranty is over.

@@betterbeavailable Please explain what is crap about a physical shifter that is satisfying to move? Fuck button/dial shifters lmao they're awful
@JayyyCloud

@@FracturedGoblin The only thing is moving the stick, as there is no benefit to having just a button. Buttons are safer and more cost effective, except ofc, if you still have to switch to buttons ;)

@@JayyyCloud In what way is a button safer? God help me for having to burn 3 calories by moving a shifter 2 inches towards me to start driving

@@JayyyCloud I hear more people getting ran over by their own cars with digital gear shifters than manual levers. Definitely safer lol.

I can`t believe Doug didn`t metion an opportunity to make an opening in the backrest of front passenger seat to allow rear passenger to lie-down his leg there. This function is so obvious in the control screen between rear seats and this function is so rare ....

Honestly the blacked out version of the grille doesn’t look all that bad. I’ve grown to to like the aggressiveness of the Lexus front grille. Maybe in 10 years I’ll be saying that about BMW too but that remains to be seen

@@billygribble9939 actually doug is unfair about the wireless charging thing because he is testing a trim that is focused on rear seats.also it has every feature that it rivals have also each trim is for different people

0:07 i think its interesting how they slung the cab of it towards the back with a look of less overhang at the rear axle, i think its to keep it in the trend of how theyre trying to make sedans look like a Panamera or a GT style. Anyways, on with this video because i always comment before finishing the video
